Maximum Monthly Amounts On Food Stamps
There is a maximum monthly allotment based on the size of the household. When determining your benefit allotment, they will take your net monthly income and multiply it by 30%. That number will then be subtracted from the maximum monthly allotment. The remaining amount is the total monthly allotment you will receive based on your application. This amount may change if your income or household size changes.
SNAP benefits are a specific money amount provided to recipients each month to go towards nutritional foods. Recipients are provided with an electronic benefits transfer card, and money is added to the card each month. You can check your balance by phone, and any unused funds at the end of the month remain on the card to be used to following month. Once allocated, benefits will not expire.

Test 1 Gross Income Test
The first test you must meet is the gross monthly income test. This is a households income before any allowable deductions are applied.
The USDA requires that a households income must be at or below 130 percent of the poverty line.
In fiscal year 2022, the poverty line amount for an individual is $1,073. Therefore for food stamps application, 130 percent of that level is $1,396. An individual applying for food stamps must, therefore, have a gross monthly income of $1,396 or below to qualify.
For a family of three, the poverty line is $1,830 a month. Therefore, 130 percent of that is $2,379 a month, or about $28,550 a year. The poverty level is higher for bigger families and lower for smaller families.

It has been mentioned in the above eligibility requirements that households containing an elderly or disabled individual are held to different requirements. Why Its Important To Know Your Household Size For Food Stamps
Your food stamp office factors the gross income of everyone you list as a member of your household.
In my example, had I listed my cousin as a household member I would have received a much lower amount of food stamps because they wouldve taken into account the income he was making at his job. We werent sharing food, so he didnt need to be listed as a household member.
Here are other examples of people who may live in the same house, but dont need to be listed as a household member.
- Your girlfriend/boyfriend. From the things Ive read the food stamp offices looks at this relationship the same way they do a roommate. Now, if the girlfriend gets pregnant and has a child things change. The parent of your child, even if unmarried, is viewed the same way as a spouse and would need to be listed as part of your household.
- An uncle who is unemployed but living with you
- A cousin living with you to attend college
- Someone who you rented a room to on Craigslist
- Children who live with you who are older than 22
- A caregiver who takes care of a senior
These are just a few examples, but the bottom line, if you do not share and prepare food together with the individual they do not need to be listed as part of your household.
Who should and shouldnt be considered apart of your household income can be confusing, so be sure to ask your food stamp case manager about any unique living situations you may have.
Renewal Requirements Are Being Reinstated
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service waiver to extend certification periods is ending. Nutrition Assistance and Cash Assistance recipients whose benefits are set to expire on or after May 31, 2021, will need to renew their benefits in order to continue receiving assistance, if they have already received a six-month extension since November 2020. Affected households will receive a notice with instructions on how to complete the renewal process.

The Food Stamp Program Benefit
Once eligibility is established, participating households are expected to be able to devote 30 percent of their counted monthly cash income to food purchases. The FSP benefit then makes up the difference between 30 percent of countable income and a maximum benefit level that is derived from a model budget developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, called the Thrifty Food Plan . Because both the TFP and the allowable standard deduction vary by household size, benefits vary as well. The maximum benefit schedule is detailed in Table 1. Few households receive the maximum benefit, because most have countable income.
