To determine a weekly benefit amount on an initial unemployment claim, wage amounts are reviewed for a time frame called a Standard Base Period. This period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to the date your initial claim is filed. The base period changes on the Sunday of the first complete calendar week of the new quarter.
To receive benefits you must have earned a minimum of $780.01 in each of two quarters during your Standard Base Period. If youve met this requirement, then your wages earned will be used to calculate your weekly benefit amount.
The maximum amount of benefits you may be eligible to receive in your benefit year is either 26 times your weekly benefit amount or one-fourth of your base period wageswhichever amount is less will be used for your claim. To be eligible for benefits, you must have base period wages outside the highest quarter of your base period of at least six times your WBA or $900.
If you worked in Tennessee during your base period but moved to another state, you may be able to claim benefits for those wages earned in Tennessee. If you worked in another state during the base period, but moved to Tennessee, you may file a claim for benefits from another state. As noted, additional unemployment benefits of $600 per week were originally authorized by the CARES Act through July 31, 2021. This was followed by the Lost Wages Assistance program, authorized by an Aug. 8 presidential memo and subsequent Department of Labor guidance. LWA funds, which were expected to last from Aug. 1, 2020, to Dec. 27, 2020, were depleted by Sept. 5, 2020.
The signing of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 into law Dec. 27, 2020, restarted the FPUC program and authorized $300 FPUC payments beginning after Dec. 26, 2020, and ending on or before March 14, 2021.
Most recently, the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which became law March 11, 2021, extended FPUC payments through Sept. 6, 2021. ARPA also provides a waiver of federal income taxes on the first $10, 200 in unemployment benefits received in 2020.
If the state where you worked before becoming unemployed drops out of FPUC, you are not eligible for FPUC program benefits.

Weekly Certifications And Maintaining Eligibility
The TDLWD requires workers to maintain eligibility after they approve benefits. Workers must file a weekly claim for benefits, sometimes called filing a weekly claim.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s Division of Employment Security administers the state’s unemployment plan for eligible claimants. Eligible applicants who are unemployed through no fault of their own can receive benefits for 13 to 26 weeks under the standard state-federal unemployment plan during one benefit year of 52 weeks. In the wake of COVID-19, more than 3 million Americans filed for unemployment the week of March 14th, according to U.S. Department of Labor data. That includes close to 40,000 people in Tennessee.
The numbers from last week were unprecedented for Tennessee and for the nation, Chris Cannon, assistant administrator of communications for the state Department of Labor, said.

Governor Bill Lee signed Executive Order 15 earlier this month, aiming to help people access unemployment benefits. Instead of waiting to receive benefits, the order makes them available upfront.
Before, a claimant would have to re-certify weekly for a month before receiving the first weeks payment. It typically comes as double payment during the fourth week.
It allows that first weeks payment to go out as soon as you are approved, so you dont have to consecutively certify for four weeks before getting that first weeks payment, Cannon said.
