How Many People Lost Federal Benefits On Labor Day

Apart from the millions of workers in states that discontinued federal unemployment aid early, more than;3 million additional people;who were getting the weekly $300 bonus lost it on Labor Day. If they’re still eligible to collect state unemployment insurance , they’ll continue to receive some compensation. But that compensation will return to pre-pandemic benefit levels, which is a significantly lower amount.;

In addition, around 7.5 million people were entirely cut off when the temporary pandemic unemployment programs expired, considered the largest cutoff of unemployment benefits in US history. Here’s how it breaks down, according to a detailed analysis of Labor Department data by the Century Foundation.;

  • 3.3 million people covered by PEUC:;This category includes workers who would have no longer been eligible to receive unemployment because they passed their state’s benefit window . The program provided up to 53 weeks of additional aid for those who had exceeded state allowances.
  • 4.2 million people covered by PUA:;This category includes workers who do not normally qualify for any form of federal or state unemployment compensation, including freelancers, gig workers, independent contractors and part-time workers. During the pandemic, the program also supported those who couldn’t work because they were taking care of a dependent.;

Should You Ever Go Without Health Insurance

The federal fine for not having health insurance is no longer in place, although some states have their own penalties. Should you take the risk and make do without health insurance?

A fine will be the least you have to worry about if you break your arm, get appendicitis or have a heart attack and don’t have health insurance. The average hospital admission in the U.S. cost over $24,680 in 2018, according to KFF.org; the average admission for surgery cost $47,345. Perhaps it’s not surprising that medical costs are a leading cause of U.S. personal bankruptcies. Purchasing at least minimal coverage can help provide peace of mind, knowing that you’re covered if a costly illness or accident occurs while you’re in between jobs.

Investigate Marketplace Health Insurance

Can You Get Unemployment If You Quit In Arkansas

Health insurance plans that meet Affordable Care Act requirements are sold through the Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov; some states have their own marketplaces. It’s worth investigating Marketplace coverage before making any insurance decisions, because you may qualify for tax credits that will pay part or even all of your premiums.

All Marketplace plans must cover preexisting conditions and 10 essential health benefits, including prescription drugs, maternity care and mental health care. Plans come in four “metal” levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Bronze plans have the lowest premiums, but they cover only about 60% of your health care costs and have high deductibles, so you’ll pay more out of pocket if you need care. Platinum plans have high premiums but low deductibles and cover about 90% of your health care costs. Silver and Gold plans fall somewhere in the middle. In addition to tax credits, you might also qualify for “cost-sharing reductions” that lower your out-of-pocket costs for deductibles, copayments and coinsurance; if so, you must buy a Silver plan to take advantage of these reductions.

Normally, you can only purchase Marketplace plans during open enrollment. However, when you lose job-based health insurance, you qualify for a Special Enrollment period and have 60 days to enroll in a Marketplace health plan, regardless of the time of year.

What Information Do I Need To Apply

When you apply for unemployment, you’ll need to provide information that identifies you and your last employer. Depending on how long you worked at your last position, you may also need to submit information about your previous employment.

State requirements vary, but typically, unemployment programs will ask for information like:

  • Your Social Security number

You Might Need To Switch Plans To Get The Full Benefit

You can get the additional premium subsidies applied to any metal-level plan, although your subsidy can never be more than the cost of your plan. So if youre enrolled in a plan thats less expensive than the benchmark plan, you might find that youre able to upgrade to a better plan without paying any additional premium.

But you can only get the enhanced cost-sharing reductions if youre enrolled in a Silver plan. So if you currently have a Bronze or Gold plan, you might choose to switch to a Silver plan to get the full benefits available under the ARP.

Although switching to a new plan mid-year usually means starting over with a new deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, many states and insurers are allowing enrollees to keep their accumulated out-of-pocket costs, as long as they switch to a new plan from the same insurer.

Im Partially Employed Because Im A Student And Work Part Time Doing Ride

Health insurance options for recently unemployed

You may be eligible for PUA, depending on your personal circumstances. A gig economy worker, such as a driver for a ride-sharing service, is eligible for PUA provided that he or she is unemployed, partially employed, or unable or unavailable to work for one or more of the qualifying reasons provided for by the CARES Act. For example, a driver for a ride-sharing service may be forced to quit his or her job if he or she was diagnosed with COVID-19 by a qualified medical professional, and although the driver no longer has COVID-19, the illness caused health complications that render the driver objectively unable to perform his or her essential job functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Similarly, under an additional eligibility criterion established by the Secretary of Labor pursuant to 2102, a driver who receives an IRS Form 1099 from the ride-sharing service may qualify for PUA benefits if he or she has been forced to suspend operations as a direct result of the COVID-19 public health emergency, such as if an emergency state or municipal order restricting movement makes continued operations unsustainable. Relatedly, widespread social distancing undertaken in response to guidance from federal, state, or local governments may so severely reduce customer demand for a drivers services as to force him or her to suspend operations, and thus make the driver eligible for PUA.
