How Do I Apply

To receive unemployment insurance benefits, you need to file a claim with the unemployment insurance program in the state where you worked. Depending on the state, claims may be filed in person, by telephone, or online.

• You should contact your state’s unemployment insurance program as soon as possible after becoming unemployed.
• Generally, you should file your claim with the state where you worked. Following a federal disaster declaration due to the effects of Tropical Storm Fred, Disaster Unemployment Assistance benefits are now available in Buncombe, Haywood and Transylvania counties. Individuals in these three counties have until October 10, 2021 to apply for DUA.

Is There An Unemployment Waiting Period

Unemployment insurance waiting periods are 100% state-driven. Many states have what is known as a “waiting period,” otherwise referred to as a “waiting week” as part of their unemployment insurance laws.
