Like every state, Indiana looks at your recent work history and earnings during a one-year “base period” to determine your eligibility for unemployment. . Federal unemployment benefit programs, designed to help workers financially survive the pandemic, are now over. While states can use CARES Act money to extend them, Indiana like most states has no plans to do so.;
Programs including Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation ended on Sept. 4. Although the federal end date was set at Sept. 6, Indiana’s eligibility schedule for benefits meant the benefits ended two days before.
Based on recent numbers from the Department of Workforce Development, around 90,000 Hoosiers who were collecting federal benefits up to the end date, lost their eligibility altogether. Another 20,000 could keep collecting regular state-supplied benefits, but lost an extra $300 a week federal boost that came with it.

Reasons For Denial Of Benefits
If you do not meet the wage earning requirements, you will not qualify for benefits. You will receive a notice from the DWD called a Wage Transcript and Benefit Determination that shows how the state determined your qualification and the figures used to calculate your base period wages. You have 10 days to request a redetermination whether the error works against you or in your favor. If you receive benefit payments you shouldnt have because of an error, you will have to repay those benefits.

If you are denied unemployment benefits, you may appeal a claim by requesting a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge . Some things to take note of are:

You must be totally or partially unemployed through no fault of your own, and you must have earned sufficient wages in your base period . Also, you must be able and available for full-time work.
You can determine your weekly benefit amount by dividing your total base period wages by 52. Then, multiply that number by 0.47. Your weekly benefit amount should be rounded down to the next whole dollar amount. Your WBA is based on your total wages earned in the base period. The maximum weekly benefit amount is $390, as set by Indiana law.
The length of time that you will receive benefits is also based on how much you made during the base period, but not more than 26 weeks.
You must mail or fax your appeal within 10 calendar days from the date the decision was mailed to you . Your appeal must be in writing. Also, you should keep filing your weekly claims regularly because you could only be paid for weeks you filed if you win your appeal. Finally, you must attend the hearing, or your appeal will be dismissed.
Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Application Process

Recent federal legislation provides an estimated $260 billion in enhanced and expanded unemployment insurance to millions of workers throughout the country who are being furloughed, laid off, or finding themselves without work through no fault of their own because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health response to it.
One of the programs that were created by federal legislation is Pandemic Unemployment Assistance . The PUA is in addition to Indianas traditional Unemployment Insurance . PUA provides emergency unemployment assistance to workers who are left out of regular state UI or who have exhausted their state UI benefits.
Those eligible for PUA include self-employed workers, including independent contractors, freelancers, workers seeking part-time work, and workers who do not have a long enough work history to qualify for state UI benefits.
PUA will provide income support to many workers who are shut out of state UI systems in this country. In fact, workers who are eligible for state UI are not eligible for the PUA program.
PUA applications are now available on Indianas Department of Workforce Development UI application system to those who have already applied for and been denied regular UI benefits. PUA applications will be available to others as soon as they apply for and are denied regular UI.
