How Can I Check The Status Of My Unemployment

Posted: Jun 29, 2019 ;· Check My Unemployment Status. In California, Texas and many other states, you can check on your unemployment claim status either online or by phone. For online checking, you will first be required to create an account on the state employment department website. You may already have an account you created when you filed your initial claim.

Weekly Certification And Maintaining Eligibility

The DES wants benefit recipients to maintain eligibility status during the time they are receiving benefits, especially that they are available to work and are looking for work. In order to monitor this, the state requires benefit recipients to certify their claim each week, also called filing a weekly claim.

You may certify online or by telephone at 888-372-3453. If you use the telephone to certify, you have certain days you call to certify. If your SSN ends in an odd number, call on Monday. If it ends in an even number, call on Tuesday. The rest of the week is open to all. Those who call soonest receive their benefits soonest.

When you certify, you will receive several questions meant to determine whether you have maintained eligibility for that week. The DES wants to know:

  • Whether you are able and available to work
  • Whether you have started or quit a job
  • Whether you have earned wages or income that you are required to report
  • Whether you have refused an offer of suitable employment
  • Whether you are making a good faith effort to find work

If you have earned wages, you will have to report your earnings when you certify. You report your wages during the week you earned those wages, not during the week in which you received them.

The North Carolina DES uses a debit card as the default method to make UI benefit payments more secure and convenient for claimants. Users have access to their benefits 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through Bank of America, which administers the program, or anywhere that Visa debit cards are accepted. You do not need to have a bank account as the debit card is separate from any particular existing bank account you may have.

Claimants who do not want to use a debit card have the option of choosing to have their benefit payments directly deposited into their own existing checking or savings account at any participating bank, savings and loan or credit union. Are You Available And Actively Searching For Work

To maintain your eligibility for unemployment benefits, you must be able to work, available to accept a job, and looking for employment. If youre offered a suitable position, you must accept it. For the initial unemployment period, whether a position is suitable depends on several factors, including the level of skill and training required, the similarity between the work and your previous employment, how much the position pays, and the distance between the job site and your residence. However, as time goes on, you will be expected to modify your standards and consider accepting work that requires less skill or that pays lower wages.

You must conduct a reasonable search for work, which means contacting at least four employers each week. You should keep a record of your job search efforts, including the employers you have contacted, the dates you made contact, and the outcome. Thousands At Risk Of Losing Unemployment Insurance Benefits In South Carolina: What You Need To Know

COLUMBIA, S.C. Thousands of claimants in South Carolina are at risk of losing their unemployment insurance benefits.

Leaders with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce say thousands of Pandemic Unemployment Assistance recipients have not satisfied a federal documentation requirement that was outlined in the Continued Assistance Act.

The deadline for most PUA claimants is coming up on May 5.

DEW leaders say legislation clearly defines that anyone receiving PUA benefits had to show proof that they were either employed, self-employed, or had planned employment .

The agency does not want to turn off someones unemployment benefits, but if we do not receive that document by the May 5th deadline, we are actually federally required to stop payment on that individuals claim, and, in addition, we would have to collect any money that theyve received since the beginning of this year, said Heather Biance, DEW Spokesperson.

For some, that could be more than $10,000 they would have to pay back to DEW as an overpayment.

Claimants were given 90 days to provide an employment document if they filed for unemployment before January 31st of this year. That means for almost all of our PUA claimants, May 5th will be the 90-day deadline. So, claimants really need to get us these documents as soon as possible, Biance said.
