How To File an Application for Unemployment Benefits – 2022

If you didnt receive the full payment you were entitled to, then its possible that when you are filing your 2020 tax return you may end up getting more money, says Eric Bronnenkant, head of tax at financial services firm Betterment.

If your economic situation changed lets say you qualified based on 2018 or 2019 income because it was lower, but your economic situation improved for 2020 the IRS actually cant ask for any of that money back, Bronnenkant adds. Your situation cant get worse in that scenario.

Taxpayers will need to file a 2020 federal income tax return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if they didnt get their Economic Impact Payments or they received less money than theyre eligible to get, such as if a childs credit wasnt included in the payout.

The Recovery Rebate Credit is listed on Line 30 of the 1040 Form for the 2020 tax year.

Unemployment Benefits And 2020 Tax Returns

Without this new tax exemption, many people who claimed unemployment benefits in 2020 could have faced an unwelcome tax bill.

Generally, unemployment benefits are taxable income. That includes standard state unemployment benefits as well as 2020 federal benefits expansions, like PUA, PEUC, and other federal relief measures.

But millions of claimants did not have federal taxes withheld from their benefits last year, whether because they didnt know they were taxable or because they couldnt afford to have some amount of benefits withheld, according to analysis by the Century Foundation.

To further complicate things, while state unemployment offices are supposed to offer standard 10% federal tax withholding, not all states offered withholding consistently across different CARES Act programs.

Researchers estimate fewer than 40% of unemployment insurance payments issued in 2020 had taxes withheld.

The average unemployed worker received $14,000 in unemployment benefits in 2020, the Century Foundation estimates. Now, with $10,200 of that income tax-exempt, the average claimant will owe taxes on just $3,800 of the money they took in.

The Unemployed Still Have To Pay Taxes Even On Unemployment Benefits

Whether or not you have to file a tax return has nothing to do with your employment status. It depends entirely on how much income you received during the year.

If your income falls above the income threshold for your filing status, you have to file a tax return. Unfortunately, it doesnt matter to the IRS if you happen to be out of a job.

The unemployed should note, however, that unemployment benefits do qualify as taxable income. In other words, your unemployment payment received is considered income.

Who Needs To File An Amended Return To Claim The Tax Break

Most taxpayers donât need to file an amended return to claim the exemption. If the IRS determines you are owed a refund on the unemployment tax break, it will automatically correct your return and send a refund without any additional action from your end.

The only reason to file an amended return is if the calculations now make you eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on your original tax return, for example the âAdditional Child Tax Creditâ or the âEarned Income Tax Credit.â If you think youâre now eligible for deductions or credits based on an adjustment, the most recent IRS release has a list of those who should file an amended return.

The average IRS refund for those who paid too much tax on jobless benefits is $1,686.

Why Must Some Amend Their Returns

Beginning in May and continuing into the summer, the IRS will automatically refund taxpayers who filed their returns without claiming the new tax break on unemployment benefits, it said, but this was in regards to their federal return.

Some states may still opt to tax jobless aid, tax experts say. That means some taxpayers may have to file an amended return to get their maximum refund if the unemployment tax break now makes them eligible for additional tax credits that were not claimed on their original return, or if they mistakenly excluded their unemployment income in states that choose to still tax the jobless aid.

Otherwise, the IRS said it will recalculate returns of taxpayers by incorporating the $10,200 exclusion and either refund them or apply it to other taxes they owe.

While many states will follow suit and automatically refund taxpayers, there are a handful of states that are requiring taxpayers to file an amended tax return to receive the benefit of the unemployment tax break if they filed before the American Rescue Plan was signed, says Curtis Campbell, president of TaxAct, a tax preparation software.

This varies by state. Taxpayers who filed their returns before the American Rescue Plan became law in March may need to file an amended state tax return to get a state refund.

New Mexico, for instance, has advised taxpayers to amend their returns if they were filed before mid-March.

How To File Taxes After Receiving Unemployment Benefits

How can you figure out how much you owe after receiving unemployment benefits? The solution is to prepare your taxes for filing as early as possible so that you can estimate what your tax bill will be.

If you received unemployment compensation, you should receive Form 1099-G from your state. This shows the amount you were paid and any federal income tax you chose to have withheld.

First, if you’re filing by using tax software or using a tax preparation service, it’s easy. The software package will ask you if you received unemployment benefits this year, and if you say yes, it will ask you for numbers directly from your 1099-G form. Your tax preparer will ask you for a copy of your 1099-G. In either case, this is easily handled.

  • You’ll fill out Form 1040 as usual, following the provided instructions.
  • You will also have to fill out Schedule 1, which provides details on additional income like your unemployment income.
  • You simply enter your unemployment compensation on line 7 of Schedule 1, and you find that number on Box 1 of your 1099-G form that you received in the mail.
  • Finish filling out Schedule 1.
  • Then, when you finish filling out your 1040, you take the number on line 22 of Schedule 1 and put that number on line 10a of your 1040. Then, just finish filling out your 1040 as normal.
  • What if you had tax withheld from your unemployment check?

  • The amount of tax that has been withheld for you appears on box 4 on your 1099-G form.

New Agi Exclusions For Unemployment Benefits

As a result of the ARPA, up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits are now excluded from income for single taxpayers. For married taxpayers, up to $20,400 of unemployment benefits can be excluded if both received unemployment benefits and filed a joint income tax return. These changes can affect the FAFSA treatment of unemployment benefits on the 2022-23 FAFSA as its based on 2020 income. Applicants began filing the 2022-2023 FAFSA on October 1, 2021.Since ARPA was signed into law on March 11, 2021, some taxpayers may have already filed their federal income tax returns beforehand and reported the unemployment benefits as part of their adjusted gross income . The IRS is sending these taxpayers a refund. But taxpayers who filed their returns after this date wont have the unemployment benefits reported as income on their tax returns. So their returns will report a lower AGI than taxpayers who filed their federal income tax returns before the change.
