Is Financial Assistance Available For Health Insurance When Youre Unemployed
You can get help with insurance costs when youre unemployed. People with low or moderate incomes can get reduced premiums and other financial support for their health insurance through their states marketplace, Dr. Miller says.
The American Rescue Act of 2021 has expanded the financial assistance available to people who have lost their jobs. More people qualify for health insurance tax credits, and those who are already qualified may receive even more assistance. Three out of five eligible unemployed individuals on average qualify for $0 health insurance plans under the expanded benefits, while four out of five will get coverage for $10 or less per month.
Suppose you received unemployment income at any point during 2021. In that case, CMS encourages you to complete an application or update your information at Healthcare.gov by August 15, 2021, to see if you qualify for increased savings.
When Should You Use Cobra
COBRA is usually not the most cost-effective way to get health insurance. We recommend that you only use it for a few months or in the following situations:
- Stopgap to continue coverage while waiting for another policy to begin.
- To keep using a plan’s benefits when you’re receiving ongoing health care and you’ve already met the plan’s deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. In this situation, the higher monthly costs of a COBRA plan are offset by lower medical costs because the plan details carry forward when it switches from employer coverage to COBRA.
Can I Get Health Insurance After Quitting A Job
Yes, you can still get health insurance if you quit your job. You can keep your job-based coverage for up to 18 months with a COBRA plan. Or you can buy an individual plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
If you have previously paid into a Health Savings Account , the funds are still available to you even if youve left your job. You can use this money to help pay for eligible medical expenses, which can also help to lower health care costs while out of work.
Having health insurance between jobs can help protect you from unexpected out-of-pocket expenses, especially if you were to have a medical emergency while out of work. Either a COBRA plan or an individual plan could be right for you.

If You Qualified For Cobra Premium Assistance
If you qualified for COBRA continuation coverage because you or a household member had a reduction in work hours or involuntarily lost a job, you may have qualified for help paying for your COBRA premiums .
COBRA premium assistance under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 was available April 1, 2021 through September 30, 2021. Since this help ended on September 30, you can enroll in a Marketplace plan with a Special Enrollment Period. To enroll, you can report a September 30 “loss of coverage” on your application. You cant qualify for a premium tax credit while youre enrolled in COBRA, so if you want to change to Marketplace coverage, make sure that your COBRA coverage ends on the last day before your Marketplace coverage can start. If you decide to keep COBRA without premium assistance, you can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period based on the end date of your COBRA coverage, which is usually 18 to 36 months after it started.
If you have questions about COBRA or COBRA premium assistance, visit the U.S. Department of Labor at DOL.gov or call 1-866-444-3272 to speak to a benefits advisor.

Cobra To Continue Existing Coverage
COBRA, which stands for the Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act, allows you and your family to temporarily continue group health coverage when you would otherwise lose it. You retain the same benefits and provider networks you already have when you elect COBRA.
To qualify for COBRA, you must be enrolled in your employers health plan and experience a qualifying event that would cause you to otherwise lose that coverage. Qualifying events for covered employees include:
- Termination of employment for any reason other than gross misconduct.
- Reduction in the number of hours of employment.
There are additional qualifying events for the spouse and dependent children of covered employees.
This option tends to be a fit for those who want to keep the coverage they already have, regardless of cost. Some reasons you might prefer to elect COBRA include having met or paid into your plan deductible for the year, wanting to continue care through your existing in-network healthcare providers, or not wanting to switch plans because you like the one you have.
You want to look into COBRA alternatives if you cant afford the premiums or will be moving out of your plan network after becoming unemployed.
Cost: Typically your full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. The amount cannot exceed 102%.
Enrollment: To elect COBRA, you have at least 60 days from either the date you were provided with your COBRA election notice or the date you would lose coverage, whichever is later.

Do I Need Health Insurance Between Jobs
Having health coverage when youre in between jobs can help protect you should you need care. If you need medical care, a health insurance plan can provide coverage for eligible services. That means once you meet your deductible, you and your plan share the costs for your care. And under most plans your preventive care is covered at 100%. Tips If Youre Unemployed And Need Health Care
It might be impossible to predict when your job could be coming to an end, but there are things you can do to keep yourself ahead of the game and have a backup plan if you suddenly find yourself out of work and out of health insurance.
1. Start to find new coverage as soon as possible.
Even before you leave a job, theres nothing wrong with talking to those helpful folks in Human Resources about your health insurance benefits and what will happen to them if you leave. Youll be able to find out how much COBRA coverage will cost you and use this info to decide whether to stick with COBRA or go it alone in the health insurance marketplace.
2. Have all your important details ready.
When youre all set to talk COBRA or marketplace or even Medicaid, heres the information you should have ready: your income, total household income, Social Security number, pay stubs, tax records, information about your current health insurance plan, and the number of dependents in your household.
3. Get advice from an independent insurance agent.
4. Keep your emergency fund full.
An emergency fund is a must no matter what your situation is in life! But its super important if youre out of work and out of health insurance coverage. Your emergency fund takes away the worry of those unpredictable trips to the doctor and routine checkups that come with out-of-pocket costs. Having a fully funded emergency fund will give you the ability to pay for insurance during a gap period without all the stress.
Does Car Insurance Cost More If You Are Retired
It depends. Being unemployed does not necessarily mean you have lost your job. Perhaps you are retired or have enough passive income that you do not need to work. Retirement does not affect your premium in and of itself, but other factors that are associated with retirement can. If you arent driving as much, you may pay lower rates. If you are in your 60s, your premiums may be lower. However, if you have a poor driving record or expensive cars in your retirement, youll likely see higher premiums.

How To Get Health Insurance If Youre Unemployed
There are several coverage options for those who are unemployed, with special options in place during the COVID-19 national emergency.
Becoming unemployed is scary no matter when it happens, but it can be especially scary during a global pandemic. For many people, the loss of a job also means the loss of health insurance.
In April 2020, the unemployment rate peaked at 14.8% the highest its been since 1948 before declining to a still elevated rate of 6.2% in February 2021.The Congressional Budget Office and the Federal Reserve predict that unemployment rates will remain above 6% over the next three years. Employer-sponsored insurance is the most common form of health insurance in the US, and since the pandemic began, 14.6 million workers and their dependents have lost their employer-sponsored health coverage.
If youve lost health insurance provided by an employer, you dont have to remain uninsured. Whether due to the pandemic or after the pandemic, if you are unemployed there are several options that you may be eligible for to gain health insurance coverage. In most cases, your household size and your income will determine what coverage options you have and how much youll pay for them.
1. Medicaid and the Childrens Health Insurance Program
To determine eligibility, Medicaid only considers your current income, not your income earned in the past year. This is especially helpful for recently unemployed individuals needing to access Medicaid services.
