How Long Can I Collect Dua Benefits
Your entitlement to DUA benefits is considered on a week-to-week basis. DES must determine each week you receive DUA benefits that you are unemployed as a direct result of the disaster. Periodically, you will be subject to a review to determine continued eligibility.;
Work Search Requirement Reinstated
In order for claimants to establish eligibility for UI benefits, as well as for Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation and for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance , the claimant must make three work search contacts per week. This requirement was waived in mid-March when the pandemic began, but North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper reinstated the work search requirement by executive order on March 10, 2021.
The states that a claimant must make contact with three different employers per week and keep a record of their search. A work search record should contain the date of the contact or activity; the name of the company or activity; the contact method; the name of the person contacted; the website, email address, fax number, phone number or physical address for the contact or activity; the position the claimant is seeking; and the results of the search. If the claimant is using an employment website, they should provide the name of the employer with which they are applying and the name of the employment website, such as records clerk at the University of North Carolina and Indeed.
How Will I Receive My Payments
You wont receive your first payment immediately, since theres a one-week waiting period before payments begin.
The DES pays weekly unemployment insurance payments through direct deposit into your bank account or on a DES debit card issued by Bank of America. You can use the card anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. Be aware, though, you may encounter fees if you use the card at an ATM thats not a Bank of America or Allpoint ATM, or if you use it outside of the country.

What You Need For Apply For Unemployment Benefits
To apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits, you need to provide personal information including your Social Security number, birth date, home address, email address , and phone number.
You also need information about your employment history from the last 15 months, including:
- Names of all employers, plus addresses and phone numbers
- Reasons for leaving those jobs
- Work start and end dates
- Recall date
You may need additional information in certain situations:
- If you are not a U.S. citizen your Alien Registration number
- If you have children their birth dates and Social Security numbers
- If youre in a union your union name and local number
- If you were in the military your DD-214 Member 4 form. If you dont have it, you can request your DD-214 online.
- If you worked for the federal government your SF8 form
To receive payments by direct deposit, youll also need your bank name, account number, and routing number. Otherwise, the Department of Unemployment Assistance will send you a debit card.

If youre working reduced hours, you may still be eligible for unemployment benefits. However, the amount you earn could affect your weekly benefit amount.
You must report the money you earn when filing your Weekly Certification for unemployment. You can earn up to 20% of your weekly benefit amount;without it counting against your weekly benefit. Earnings over that amount are deducted from your weekly benefits.
For example: If your weekly benefit amount is $350, you can earn up to $70 a week and receive the full $350 in benefits. Every dollar you earn over $70 will be deducted from the $350. If you earn $75 a week, your weekly benefit will be $345; if you earn $420 a week, your weekly benefit will be reduced to $0.

How Much Will I Receive In Unemployment Benefits
The maximum benefit an individual can receive in North Carolina is $350 per week. ;The formula generally aims to provide an individual with half of their average weekly salary, up to the max of $350.; The minimum an individual can receive in regular state unemployment benefits is $15 per week.; The minimum for federal PUA benefits is generally half of the states average weekly benefit amount, normally over $100 per week.; The additional $600 federal supplement expired at the end of July, but if you were unemployed between April 4th, 2020 and July 25th, 2020 and you are approved for benefits, you should receive this amount retroactively. A $300 weekly federal supplement is available through September 6, 2021.

File After Initial Application For Unemployment Insurance Benefits
Claimants should not wait to file weekly certifications until they hear from DES that they are eligible for benefits. They must file a weekly certification within 14 days after each week of unemployment to receive unemployment insurance payments. A claimant should allow up to 48 hours for payments to be fully processed. DES provides payments by direct deposit or a debit card issued by Bank of America.

If you are 65 or older and/or you have a medical condition that puts you at a high risk for severe illness if you are infected with COVID-19, and your employer is not able to offer you a safe workplace or your job does not allow for a reasonable accommodation such as teleworking, you may have good cause for not returning to work and be eligible to receive benefits.
A note from a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy who is authorized to practice medicine by the state will be considered as proof of a high-risk medical condition.

How Much Might I Get
To determine eligibility for unemployment benefits, North Carolina reviews whats known as a base period, which usually includes the first four calendar quarters of the last five quarters of your work history and wages.
If you meet wage and work requirements for the base period, the DES calculates your weekly unemployment benefit amount by looking at your total wages for the last two completed quarters and dividing that amount by 52. The total must be at least $15 or higher to receive a weekly benefit, up to a maximum of $350 per week.
For example, if your wages for the last two completed quarters were $8,000, your weekly benefit might be $153 .
Again, because states may change their benefits during times of crisis, these maximums may be different during recessions or other difficult economic situations.
