UI Online: How to Get Information about Your Benefit Payments

John was fired from his job after he was a no-call, no-show at work for six days. His truck broke down so he didnt have a way to get to work. After a week, he fixed his car and reported to work and was fired for job abandonment.

To receive benefits, John must meet the requirements for past wages, job separation and ongoing eligibility requirements.

Although he received two determination letters saying we could pay him benefits based on his past wages and transportation issue, he also received one letter explaining that we could not pay him benefits because he is disqualified on his job separation. Therefore, John will not receive benefits.

What Are 5 Reasons A Claim Might Be Denied For Payment

Unemployment Extended Benefits Program

The federal government may provide additional benefits to people who have exhausted unemployment benefits. There are additional weeks of federally funded Extended Benefits in states with high unemployment rates.

Unemployed workers are eligible for up to 13 or 20 weeks of additional unemployment benefits, depending on state laws, and the unemployment rate.

These benefits are paid through the state unemployment departments, and eligibility would start when all other benefits are exhausted. If you’re eligible, your state unemployment office will notify you.

Eligibility requirements vary by state, so be sure to check the FAQ section of your state unemployment website for details.

How Long Does It Take

Even with automated systems, you’ll wait an average of two to three weeks to receive your first benefit check. The first week is a required waiting period in some states, so you’ll at least go one week without payment. In addition to this mandatory waiting period, state employees must verify your eligibility and process your application, which can take extra time, especially if the department is understaffed or a holiday falls within your approval period.

Once approved, you’ll receive a notice by mail, but this will likely take several days. During that time, you can check online or call and get the news as soon as it’s in the system. If it helps, make a point to check your status using the web portal or phone number each day. After you’re approved, make sure you actively check in as required to avoid losing your benefits.

Although the process of applying for and receiving unemployment benefits can take awhile, generally, applicants are approved in a matter of days. It’s important to proactively check on your application during the processing time, and if you believe you’ve been unfairly denied, follow up through the appeals process. The extra effort will be worth it if you get the benefits you need to help you as you search for a new job.

With no help in sight, people like Harris are turning to elected officials, lawyers, and even social media for help. Harris is part of the Unofficial California Unemployment Help Facebook group, which has drawn more than 56,000 members since it was started in March.;

Many states operate unemployment systems that are sorely out of date or didnt have the staff to handle this deluge of applications. The states are catching up, but if there is anything wrong with your application, you could get lost in the mix, says Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the progressive, independent think tank The Century Foundation.;

If your application gets flagged and your states unemployment agency lacks the resources to resolve your issue, you could get stuck, says Stettner, who has over 20 years of experience as an unemployment insurance policy advocate.

This is what happened to Mikaelah Pagan, who found her way to the same Facebook group as Harris. She says she filed for unemployment with the EDD the day she lost her food service job and waited four months to receive benefits.;

Checking Your Unemployment Application Status

While you’ll eventually know whether you’ve gotten approved or denied when your state sends the decision letter, you can usually visit your state’s unemployment website to track your claim status at any time. You’ll usually log in to the portal using information such as your Social Security number or a user name along with a personal identification number or password. You’ll often see a link to view your claim on the portal’s main page. If you’d rather not use the website, you can call your state’s unemployment benefits hotline during business hours.

When learning your claim status, it will often be “submitted,””accepted,””pending” or “denied.” If accepted, you usually get your moneywithin three days if you use direct deposit, but a paper check can take a few more days. Often, there was a one-week waiting period before getting the first payment, but many states have waived it due to COVID-19. If denied, you can contact your state’s unemployment office for more information and potentially appeal the claim.

Caseworkers also make mistakes and even without errors, it is possible to request a reversal, appeal or re-apply.

Upon receipt of a denial , applicants can contact caseworkers. If there are errors made by either party, it may be possible to straighten out those errors. How To End A Disqualification

If your Determination on Payment of Unemployment Benefits says you are disqualified, you may be able to end the disqualification through work or earnings after you:

  • Start a job after your disqualification begins
  • Earn wages equal to six times your weekly benefit amount or work at least 30 hours a week for six weeks
  • Either become unemployed through no fault of your own or continue working a part-time job
  • Give us proof of your work or earnings and ask us to close the disqualification

We cannot pay you benefits for the time between the beginning of the disqualification and the time that you meet the requirements to close the disqualification.

You can use work or wages from most types of employment for this purpose. You cannot use types of work the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act excludes from its definition of employment. Examples of work you cannot use:

  • Domestic service, if the employer pays less than $1,000 in wages during a calendar quarter for all domestic services
  • Work performed for your son, daughter, or spouse
  • Work for a church

  • You are an interested party employer, and
  • You returned the separation request within the required time frame

If you were a base period employer but the claim arises due to separation from subsequent employment and you returned DUA’s request for information in a timely manner, your account should not be charged for benefits paid on that claim provided the former employee was separated under disqualifying circumstances. If charges are assessed to your account, you have the right to protest those benefit charges.

How To Check Unemployment Status Online For Arizona

The Arizona Department of Economic Security provides multiple webpages for the unemployment insurance process, and navigating them to find what you need can be a bit confusing. At least one of them lets you enter your Social Security number for information regarding your claim, however, and the Claims Filing System page is set up to let you know as soon as you file for benefits that your claim has been received and will be processed.

Of course, “processed” doesn’t automatically translate to “approved,” but a good many rules and qualifiers have been relaxed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

  • An Arizona driver’s license or state-issued ID
  • The name, address and phone number of any employer you worked for in the last 18 months
  • Your last date of employment
  • Your mailing address, including your county

Other Debit Card Considerations

How to Apply for UI Benefits

Checking purchases: The back of your debit card should include a customer service number as well as a website address. These services can provide you with statements that show you your recent purchases.

Minimizing fees: Some debit card companies, including those contracted by state unemployment departments, charge fees for certain activities, such as using an ATM or taking advantage of bill pay services. Make sure you understand these fees before you use your card, as well as ways that you can minimize or avoid fees entirely:

Tip

An alternative to an unemployment debit card is to request your benefits via direct deposit into a checking or savings account. There are usually no fees associated with the direct deposit, and you won’t have to worry about ATM limits, or finding a no-fee ATM when accessing your funds.

File Your Florida Unemployment Claim

Within one week of becoming unemployed, you should begin the claims process to receive your Reemployment Assistance benefits. The date your application is finished determines when you will begin receiving benefits. Claims always begin with the Sunday prior to the completion of the application. For example, an application completed on Wednesday will take effect on the Sunday before that Wednesday.

All claims in Florida must be completed online. The process should take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete.

Those who need assistance because of disabilities, legal reasons, computer illiteracy or language barriers should call 1-800-681-8102.

Once your claim is filed, you will receive a confirmation notice that your claim has been received. You must request benefit payment no later than seven days from your scheduled report date. If you do not receive a confirmation notice, call the Claims Assistance Center toll free at 1-800-204-2418.
