The path to filing for unemployment benefits online through EDD begins with creating a Benefits Programs online account. This is a pretty straightforward process that is similar to creating an account on any other type of website. To get started, go to the Benefit Programs Online page on the main EDD website and select Log In or Register to set up an account as a first-time user. You will then be asked to answer a series of prompts. Read the programs terms and conditions and accept them to proceed.
Next, youll enter your personal email address and create a strong password to use on the site when you log in for information. You also have to choose an image and a caption for security reasons. Each time you log in, youll be asked to verify the image and caption that you chose. You will also have to set up your account with four security questions to help verify your identity in the future, if necessary. You may be prompted to answer these questions at times before being allowed to log in.
Finally, you will have to verify your email address before you can proceed. Once you complete the initial registration, EDD will send a unique link to your email. Click on it to verify your email address is valid, and your account will be activated. If you dont see an email from EDD within a few minutes, check your spam folder.

Quitting or Getting Fired. The EDD interviewer obtains and documents information about the separation from the employer and claimant and decides, according to law and regulations, if the person is eligible to collect benefits. The EDD mails a notice to the claimant if they are not eligible for benefits.

Look For Important Claim Information
You should receive an email from the EDD with the subject New Online Account Created. That means your registration was automatically completed in UI OnlineSM so you can move to Step 2 and certify for your first benefit payment.
If you did not get an email and have not filed an unemployment claim in the past several years, you will receive a letter in the mail with your EDD Customer Account Number. You must have this to set up your UI Online account so you can move to Step 2.
Note: You will receive important claim information in the mail about two weeks after you apply. This includes if you are eligible for benefits and, if so, what you could receive in weekly payments.
If you received a Notice of Determination and are not eligible for benefits, you have the right to file an appeal if you do not agree with all or part of our decision. For more information, visit Unemployment Insurance Appeals.

How to file a claim
Indiana Unemployment Registration Process
To be eligible for EDD unemployment in IN, unemployment applicants must endure a one-week waiting period after filing their initial claim. Unemployment applicants should file their unemployment benefits claim as soon as they become unemployed. Any wages earned during the waiting period must be reported.
After applicants file for unemployment the first time, they do not need to contact the DWD or their local WorkOne unless otherwise instructed. The applicants unemployment eligibility will be determined during this period. The UI petitioner will receive a wage transcript and benefits computation form within 10 days of filing their application. The computation form does not determine qualification and it is not a guarantee of benefits, instead, it is a statement providing a possible weekly benefit amount and an overall maximum benefits amount that the applicant may be eligible for, pending other requirements.
In addition to the unemployment EDD application, claimants must also register for a job search program online to qualify for unemployment benefits. If an applicant believes that he or she is entitled to a work search waiver because the applicant belongs to a union hiring hall and has a return-to-work-date within 60 days, or is enrolled in DWD approved training, he or she does not need to report the required three work searches a week.
Provide More Information If Needed
You may get notice in the mail that asks for more information to process your claim. If you received an award notice that shows $0 in wages, you may still qualify for benefits. Situations that take more time to resolve include:
Sometimes this can happen if:
- We have no record or only a partial record of your wages.
- You were misclassified by your employer as an independent contractor instead of an employee.
- Your employer accidentally reported wage information incorrectly to us.
If you believe our record of your wages isnt accurate, you can contact us to investigate. The best way to request an investigation is to log in to your UI Online account and select Contact Us. Give a brief summary of why you disagree with the notice and information about your wages. You can also correct the wages on the award notice and send copies of your W-2, Form 1099, or a paycheck stub to the address on the front of the notice.
We will follow up with you and your employer for any details needed to make a determination. It typically takes us a couple of weeks to collect the information, investigate, and notify you of your eligibility for benefits. You will receive a call from the EDD. Return any messages quickly so we can determine if you qualify for benefits.
If youre self-employed or an independent contractor and have not contributed to the state unemployment fund, you may still qualify for benefits with the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.
