DETR working to resolve issue that delayed unemployment payments

Demand for unemployment benefits is staggering: In less than two months, the department has paid out more than $1 billion in federal and state unemployment aid.

Meanwhile, average weekly voucher filings have increased by more than tenfold from 34,000 in April 2019 to 376,920 through the first four weeks of last month alone, according to department data.

The department says it resolved an average of 86 percent of those weekly vouchers, or roughly 324,000 each week, as of May 9. The majority of those resolved vouchers 91 percent were deemed eligible and prompted payments.

The claims come amid a flurry of additional funding from Congress Pandemic Unemployment Compensation provides an extra $600 per week, while Pandemic Unemployment Assistance provides unemployment insurance for those who don’t typically qualify for state-funded unemployment benefits.

The first round of Pandemic Unemployment Assistance payments were released on May 8. The department announced on Friday that it had paid 60,000 of the 68,000 claims filed under that program.

But the remaining percentage of unresolved vouchers still equals a large number of payments, considering more than half a million people have filed initial claims since the week of March 22 alone.

The department has tripled its claim adjudicators trained staff who investigate potential issues with a claim from 100 to 300, with plans to add more.

How Much Will My Weekly Payment Be

Your weekly benefit amount is shown on your Monetary Determination of Eligibility. Your WBA is based on total wages you earned in the base period.

You can determine your weekly benefit amount by dividing your total base period wages by 52. Then, multiply that number by 0.47. Your weekly benefit amount should be rounded down to the next whole dollar amount, up to a maximum of $390.00

For example, if your total wages in the base period was $30,000 then your WBA would be: $30,000 ÷ 52 = $576.92 × 0.47 = $271

Base Period Defined

Your base period includes the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before the week you file an initial claim application for a new benefit year. The last quarter worked is called the lag quarter, and no wages from that quarter count in your base period.

Importance Of Unresolved Unemployment Issues

Unemployment benefits are normally paid out to you when you have lost your job through no fault of your own. However, many states allow you to collect benefits when you leave your job voluntarily for good cause. You may not have been paid for your work, for example. If there is a dispute between you and your employer over the nature of how you left your job, your unemployment benefits are at risk.

Tens Of Thousands Of Maryland Unemployment Claims Are Stuck In The System State Labor Officials Say

Issues with attempting to file unemployment claims

Nearly 71,000 Maryland residents who have filed unemployment claims during the coronavirus pandemic have been blocked from receiving payments, state labor officials said Thursday.

Those claims, which the state says are pending because of unresolved issues, make up just over 13% of all claims filed from March 9 to June 6 as layoffs and furloughs mounted amid business closures.

More than 500,000 Marylanders or roughly one in six people working in the state have filed for unemployment benefits since the coronavirus arrived, including 53,000 more people who sought the help last week. Thats 10,000 more than the week before. The state launched its new Beacon One-Stop portal to make the process easier, but many residents remain frustrated by a lack of payments and inability to get account updates.

State officials have acknowledged shortfalls in Marylands system but have defended it as one of the most successful in the country in handling the overwhelming demand during the health crisis and incorporating new federal programs created to address it.

The labor departments division of unemployment insurance paid out more than $2.2 billion in regular and CARES Act unemployment benefits from March 9 to June 6, officials said Thursday.
