Am I Eligible For Florida Unemployment Benefits
To qualify for unemployment compensation in Florida, you must be out of work through no fault of your own and have earned a minimum of $3,400 during a 12-month period. Its important to note that for the first four of the five quarters before filing your Florida unemployment benefits claim that you are :

Work Search Waiver Expiration
The most immediate impact on eligibility for unemployment benefits is the expiration of the stateâs Work Search Waiver and, for many, the requirement to register for job search assistance.
For years, law required individuals to actively pursue new work opportunities to remain eligible to receive benefits.
Gov. Ron DeSantis continued to extend the expiration of this waiver in an effort to ease the burden of returning to the workforce during the pandemic.
On May 12, Dane Eagle, executive director of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, announced the state would allow the waiver to lapse as business owners voiced frustration with hiring new employees.
Many business owners say theyâre struggling to hire new workers because people are “receiving more on unemployment than they would on the job,” although economists say it’s not that simple.
Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said the changing dynamics of the nationâs workforce is not to blame entirely on extended unemployment benefits, but rather a number of factors, including people moving to new cities, people “upskilling” into new and more stable career fields, and competition among industries that are offering higher wages, better benefits, and hiring incentives.

How Can I Apply
Getting your application started is easy. The quickest way to start it is online through the CONNECT portal. If youre not able to apply online, you can also call the agency at 1-800-681-8102.
Youll need to provide some key details, including
- Your name, address and phone number
- Your Social Security number
- Your drivers license number or state ID number
- The name, address and phone number of each employer you worked for within the past 18 months
- Your first and last day of work for each job you worked in the past 18 months
- Your gross earnings from each job
- The reason for losing your job
- Your employers tax ID number, or FEIN, which can be found on the W-2 or 1099 form you received from the employer
You may also need to provide additional details in some cases. For example, if youre a union member, youll need to provide your union name, hall number and phone number.
After you submit your application, keep an eye out. The department may email you or send out a letter requesting more details. The sooner you respond, the sooner your claim can be processed.

Am I Eligible For Regular Unemployment Compensation
Each state sets its own unemployment insurance benefits eligibility guidelines, but you usually qualify if you:
- Are unemployed through no fault of your own. In most states, this means you have to have separated from your last job due to a lack of available work.
- Meet work and wage requirements. You must meet your states requirements for wages earned or time worked during an established period of time referred to as a “base period.”
- Meet any additional state requirements. Find details of your own states program.
How Can I Qualify For Florida Unemployment Benefits
To qualify for unemployment, youll generally need to have been let go from your job through no fault of your own. In other words, if you quit, you probably wont qualify unless you can demonstrate you had a good reason to quit. If youre still employed but your hours are reduced so that youre earning less than $275 per week, you can also file for unemployment.
Youll also need to meet certain income requirements. These are calculated using a base period, which is just the past five calendar quarters . For example, if you apply for Florida unemployment benefits in May 2020 , your base period would be from Jan. 1, 2019, to Dec. 31, 2019.
Remember to use your gross earnings before taxes you can usually find that information on a paystub. Here are the income requirements based on your base period.
- You earned at least $3,400 total during the base period.
- You earned income during at least two quarters during the base period.
- Your total earnings during the base period must be at least 1.5 times your highest-earning quarter.
If your application is approved, youll need to meet a few other ongoing requirements as well. Youll need to sign up for the states job agency, Employ Florida, and youll need to document at least five job contacts per week when you recertify your eligibility through the CONNECT portal every couple of weeks.
