A Tea Reader: Living Life One Cup at a Time

We may be moving toward a cashless society, but we’re not there yet. Despite the growth of electronic payments, debit cards, and , checks are still widely used in the United States. More than 3.767 billion paper checks were issued in 2020 alone, with a combined value of $7.875 trillion, according to a Federal Reserve report.

While writing a check is quite simple, cashing one can be a chore. if you’re heading into a bank or credit union with your check, it’s important to be prepared. To avoid any problems, review these top reasons a bank may not cash your check.

What Do I Do After I Receive The Card

After receiving the card in the mail, you must call the Indiana Debit Card Customer Service Center at 1-888-393-5866 to activate the card and choose your PIN. You cannot use the card until it has been activated. Cash withdrawals at ATMs require use of your PIN. Again, for security reasons, it is important that you pick a PIN that only you would know. Do not share your PIN or the card with anyone. You should never write your PIN on your card.

Reliacard Activation Time Limit & Expiration

You must activate your card within 12 months of your first benefit payment, otherwise your payments will return to TWC. We cannot reissue these benefits.

Your ReliaCard is valid for two years, even if you stop receiving unemployment benefits. The expiration date is on the front of your card. Keep your ReliaCard in case you apply for benefits again before it expires. To avoid being charged a monthly inactivity fee, do not keep a balance on your card for more than 12 months without using it.

If you are receiving benefits when your card expires, U.S. Bank will automatically mail you a new card.

You can use your ReliaCard to:

  • Make retail purchases anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. Look for the Visa logo.
  • Get cash back when you use your card for retail purchases at participating merchant locations. The amount of cash back may vary by store. Be sure to ask about cash-back limits before beginning your transaction.

Select Credit or Debit to make a purchase. Select Debit to get cash back with your purchase at participating merchants. You will have to enter your PIN and indicate the amount of cash you want in addition to the cost of the purchase. If you select Credit, you will need to provide your signature, and you cannot get cash back.

You cannot use your ReliaCard to:

  • Pay for gasoline at the pump. To protect you from overdrafts and pre-authorization holds, you must go inside the service station and pay at the counter before you start pumping gas.

Cash Your Check At A Check

Check-cashing outlets are probably the most expensive places to cash checks. Some of them require customers to become members or to buy check-cashing ID cards before they will cash your checks. In addition to a membership fee, they might charge a first-time use fee.

Fees to cash a check can range from 1 percent to 12 percent of the face value of the check. That means you could pay between $10 to $120 to cash a $1,000 check. Some businesses charge a flat fee on top of the percentage.

The average face value of a check presented to a check-cashing outlet is $442.30, with the average fee to cash that check being $13.77, or about 3.1 percent, according to the FDIC. If thats your paycheck and you cash it every week, youll pay $55.08 a month, or $661 a year, in check-cashing fees.

Not only are check-cashing stores exorbitantly expensive, there is a risk of deceptive practices. The Better Business Bureau, for example, alerts consumers to a scam where customers of a check-cashing store are called by someone who claims to represent the business. The caller offers the customer a loan and requests payment to secure the loan. Of course, the loan is never received and the customer of the check-cashing store gets scammed out of their cash.

Check-cashing stores should be your last resort.

Why No Lump Sum

The unemployment commission pays a benefit check for every week you’re out of work. Once you return to work, your benefit checks stop. You may have money left in that total sum reported on your benefits determination. If you find yourself unemployed again in a few weeks or months, that money is still available to you. If you never need it again, it’s available to other unemployed people. The money was never specifically earmarked for you it was merely the possible total of regular unemployment benefits available to you if you needed them.

Can I Use My Debit Card At Gas Stations

You may be required to have your debit card balance verified before making purchases at certain retail establishments such as gas stations. This is the policy of these establishments to ensure purchasers have adequate funds on their debit cards to cover desired purchases. This might prevent you from using the pay-at-the-pump feature at gas stations, but you will still be able to use your card to purchase gasoline at these establishments by simply taking your card to the cashier for verification.

How To Calculate Your Unemployment Benefits

    The Balance

Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to calculate exactly how much money you’ll receive through unemployment benefits or for how long you’ll be able to collect those benefits unless your state has an online unemployment calculator. However, there are calculators you can use to estimate your benefits.

Each state has a different rate, and benefits vary based on your earnings record and the date you became unemployed. Once you find out whether you are eligible, you can file a claim for unemployment benefits. If you’re not sure about your eligibility, check with your state unemployment office. You don’t want to lose out on unemployment compensation because you didn’t think you would qualify.

Can I Cash My Dads Unemployment Check

I am assuming you do NOT mean that you or your brother would take your dad’s endorsed check to a bank or check cashing place and pretend to be your dad in order to cash it. Please don’t do that. The hassle of potentially being accused of theft would not be worth it.Most banks and check cashing places are reluctant to cash third party checks. A third party check would be one made out to your dad and signed by both your dad and the person trying to cash it, such as you or your brother. Probably the best way for your dad to handle this situation is to either deposit the check into his bank using the ATM and then withdrawing some of the proceeds. If he does not have a bank account, check cashing places such as Amscot are open until 10:00 p.m or later, so he should have a chance to cash his check even with his schedule. They charge a fee to cash a check, but that would be better than trying to have you or your brother cash his check for him.Best of luck to your dad in finding a job.PLEASE NOTE: These comments are for informational purposes only and do not constitute legal advice. How Do You Cash Out Money From An Edd Debit Card

Since the EDD card is like any other debit card, there are various ways you can cash out your money. The first one is what I have outlined above, whereby you can set up a direct deposit to a bank account. Once the funds are in your bank account, you can then withdraw them over the counter.

You can also cash out your money from any bank that accepts visa cards. You need to visit any bank and withdraw cash over the counter. You can track your transactions from your online account any time you cash out over the counter.

The other option you can get money from your EDD card is by withdrawing at an ATM. There are lots of ATMs countrywide where you can withdraw cash. ATM withdrawals at the Bank of America are free. Also, you can make two free withdrawals per EDD benefit deposit at any non-network ATM accepting Visa cards.

How Long Do I Wait For The Edd Debit Card

Once you certify for the benefits, BofA sends you the card during the first week of your benefit payments. EDD approves all the payments made to your card. The card may take up to 5 business days to arrive at the address you provide during the application.

After that, EDD subsequent payments will automatically reflect in your card account as soon as they remit. State Disability Insurance beneficiaries receive the debit card, a payment notification , and a message for the California debit card for Unemployment and Disability Benefits.

Usually, your debit card comes with

    • Information about the card
    • Quick Reference Guide, which has customer service and fee schedule information
    • California Employment Development Department Card Deposit Agreement containing Schedule of Bank Fees
    • Privacy policy of the Bank of America

The bank of America advises you to activate the card immediately when you receive it. You should carefully read all the information that comes with the card to ensure proper activation.

    Options For Receiving Unemployment Compensation

When you file for unemployment, you will be advised of the different options available for receiving benefits. Most states no longer issue paper checks because it is far less expensive to process benefits electronically.

In the states that have gone electronic, options for receiving unemployment benefits include having a direct deposit transferred straight to your bank account or having your benefits added to a bank debit card. For example, in Connecticut, claimants have two options for payment: direct deposit or a debit card.
