How Long Will The Extra Unemployment Last

EXECUTIVE ORDER FOR STIMULUS CHECKS – Fourth Stimulus Package Update & Daily News + Stock Market

Once its started, you may wonder how long you can expect the payments to keep coming. The extra $300 was originally scheduled to continue through March 14th. But its retroactive to December 27th. The newly-signed bill extends the extra relief through Labor Day of this year

Freelancers who qualify for PUA will also get the extra money a little longer. The American rescue plan also extends PUA benefits through Labor Day. However, the maximum unemployment benefits you can receive as an unemployed freelancer is 79 weeks. If you live in states with high unemployment rates, that may be extended to 86 weeks.

Unless a bill extending the extra unemployment is passed, on the cut-off date, youll resume receiving your standard unemployment benefits until your unemployment runs out. Currently, no extra compensation is planned after September 6th.

Are There Other Relief Programs Available

Enhanced unemployment benefits are no longer available, but there are other COVID-19 relief programs that you can lean on right now for help.

Who Lost Federal Unemployment Benefits On Labor Day

At the very start of the pandemic, the March 2020 CARES Act established temporary federal unemployment aid programs, and the American Rescue Plan in March 2021 extended those benefits to Labor Day. Here’s who was affected by the programs’ expiration, according to a detailed analysis of Labor Department data by the Century Foundation.

More than 3 million additional people lost Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, the weekly bonus — initially $600, then $300 — that helped out-of-work Americans supplement benefits and recover some lost wages. If you’re still eligible to collect state unemployment insurance , you’ll continue to receive some compensation after the cutoff. But the amount will be lower without the weekly $300 bonus.

Some 3.3 million people lost all their Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, or PEUC, which extended aid to those who had already exhausted their state’s benefits period . This category includes workers who would have no longer been eligible to receive unemployment because they passed their state’s benefit window. The program provided up to 53 weeks of additional aid for those who had exceeded state allowances.

That’s not the full picture of everyone affected by unemployment. Reported jobless rates generally don’t account for those who have left the labor force entirely and are no longer counted as looking for work, such as the long-term unemployed.

  • The additional payment is added on to your regular benefits and will be taxed as income.

Under the CARES Act, any eligible unemployed person will receive both regular unemployment benefits from their state and an additional $600 per week from the federal government from April 5, 2020 until July 31, 2020.

What If I Already Filed My Taxes

Obviously, some people already filed their taxes and now may need to see what other steps theyd have to take. Well likely hear more guidance from the IRS on that in the days ahead.

It may be necessary to file an amended return.

If you had taxes withheld on jobless benefits, the federal taxes are withheld at a 10% rate. On $10,200 in jobless benefits, were talking about $1,020 in federal taxes that would have been withheld. Thats money that could go to cover what income taxes you owe or possibly lead to a bigger federal income tax refund.

Many people didnt withhold taxes from their unemployment checks, so theyre still looking at paying whatever taxes they might owe on unemployment benefits that exceed the new $10,200 waiver for singles and for each spouse on a married filing joint return.

Those who faced lengthy unemployment in 2020, though, could have received far more in benefits and could still owe some taxes on their unemployment benefits. This is just a partial tax forgiveness measure.

In some cases, if people didnt have enough taxes withheld on jobless benefits, they could still face penalties and interest.

While the $600 FPUC program has now ended , with no formal extension in place due to a Congressional stalemate, it was been replaced by the Lost Wages Assistance unemployment benefits program. You can see this article for details on the now expired temporary LWA $300 weekly payment that President Trump approved in mid-August via executive order. Most states have made all payments under this program including retroactive payments.

So if you are still getting at least $100 of benefits under current and enhanced benefit programs then you should continue to certify on weekly or bi-weekly basis to receive current and retroactive $300 weekly payments. Both the payments are being administered and paid by state unemployment agencies. So you would need to contact them if you are having issues with these payments. The U.S. unemployment rate was the lowest it had been in 50 years prior to the coronavirus pandemic a number that belied the difficult economic reality for many low and middle-income Americans. In 2019, the median U.S. wage was $19.33 an hour, amounting to about $40,000 a year for a full-time, full-year worker. The wealth gap between Americas richest and poorer families more than doubled from 1989 to 2016, and as of 2018 the wage gap between Black and white Americans was not substantially different from what it had been in 1970, with the median Black household earning 61 percent of what white households earned. These inequities only worsened during the coronavirus pandemic, when Americans in low-wage jobs lost work at a higher rate, and Black, Latino and Asian workers continue to experience higher levels of joblessness than white workers.

At a moment when U.S. companies are reporting more than 9 million job openings that remain unfilled a record high labor advocates have said its a good time for Americans to ask for higher pay, more flexible work schedules and better benefits than their previous jobs offered. Some companies are offering hiring bonuses to lure workers in, and wages in sectors like leisure and hospitality are on the rise.

Businesses are putting their money where their mouths are, and in some sectors by a lot, said Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a public policy think tank.

In addition to the $300 extra, the federal Covid programs provide benefits to freelancers, self-employed and independent contractors.

The blow comes as more than two dozen states ahead of the September expiry date, with some as early as June.
