Millions of Americans have received confusing “math-error notices” from the IRS this year — letters saying they owe more taxes. Once they get the notice, they have a 60-day window to respond before it goes to the agency’s collection unit.

From the start of the year to August, the IRS sent more than 11 million of these notices. According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service, “Many math error notices are vague and do not adequately explain the urgency the situation demands.” Additionally, sometimes the notices “don’t even specify the exact error that was corrected, but rather provide a series of possible errors that may have been addressed by the IRS.”

The majority of the errors this year are related to stimulus payments, according to the Wall Street Journal. They could also be related to a tax adjustment for a variety of issues detected by the IRS during processing. They can result in tax due, or a change in the amount of the refund — either more or less. If you receive your tax refund by direct deposit, you may see IRS TREAS 310 listed for the transaction. The 310 code simply identifies the transaction as a refund from a filed tax return in the form of an electronic payment . This would also apply to those receiving an automatic adjustment on their tax return or a refund due to March legislation on tax-free unemployment benefits. You may also see TAX REF in the description field for a refund.

If you received IRS TREAS 310 combined with a CHILD CTC description, that means the money is for a monthly advance payment for the enhanced child tax credit.

If you see a 449 instead of 310, it means your refund has been offset for delinquent debt.

Congress made up to a $10,200 in jobless benefits payment in 2020 tax-free for people earning less than $150,000 a year. People might get a refund if they filed their returns with the IRS before Congress passed the law exempting a portion of unemployment payments from tax.

The IRS started issuing jobless tax refunds in May. As of July, the IRS had refunded more than $10 billion to some 9 million taxpayers. The IRS is expected to continue releasing the refunds throughout 2021.

When Will I Get The Refund

Unemployment tax refunds started landing in bank accounts in May and will run through the summer, as the IRS processes the returns.

The first phase included the simplest returns, made by single taxpayers who didn’t claim for children or any refundable tax credits.

More complicated ones may take longer to process.

In mid-July, the IRS issued 4million refunds, of which those by direct deposit landed in bank accounts from July 14.

Meanwhile, households who receive the cash refund by paper check could expect this from July 16.

Another batch of payments were then sent out at the end of July, with direct deposits on July 28 and paper checks on July 30.

The IRS didn’t announce any payouts for August and is yet to reveal the upcoming refund schedule too.

Irs Issues Another 430000 Refunds For Adjustments Related To Unemployment Compensation

    WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service recently sent approximately 430,000 refunds totaling more than $510 million to taxpayers who paid taxes on unemployment compensation excluded from income for tax year 2020.

    The IRS efforts to correct unemployment compensation overpayments will help most of the affected taxpayers avoid filing an amended tax return. So far, the IRS has identified over 16 million taxpayers who may be eligible for the adjustment. Some will receive refunds, while others will have the overpayment applied to taxes due or other debts.

    The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, enacted in March, excluded the first $10,200 in unemployment compensation per taxpayer paid in 2020. The $10,200 is the amount excluded when calculating one’s adjusted gross income it is not the amount of refund. The exclusion applied to individuals and married couples whose modified adjusted gross income was less than $150,000.

    Earlier this year, the IRS began its review of tax returns filed prior to the enactment of ARPA to identify the excludible unemployment compensation. To date, the IRS has issued over 11.7 million refunds totaling $14.4 billion. This latest batch of corrections affected over 519,000 returns, with 430,000 taxpayers receiving refunds averaging about $1,189.

    What If I Haven’t Filed A Tax Return

    TAXPAYERS had until May 17 to file an extension if they needed more time to submit their returns.

    If you didnt file a tax return or an extension, but should have, you need to take action – or the penalties you face may increase.

    If you file your return over 60 days late, youll have to pay a $435 fine or 100% of the tax you owe – whichever is less.

    However, there is no penalty for filing a late return after the tax deadline if a refund is due, said the IRS.

    If you didn’t file and owe tax, file a return as soon as you can and pay as much as possible to reduce penalties and interest.

    How To Use Tax Refund Trackers And Access Your Tax Transcript

    The first way to get clues about your refund is to try the IRS online tracker applications: The Where’s My Refund tool can be accessed here. If you filed an amended return, you can check the Amended Return Status tool.

    If those tools don’t provide information on the status of your unemployment tax refund, another way to see if the IRS processed your refund is by viewing your tax records online. You can also request a copy of your transcript by mail or through the IRS’ automated phone service by calling 1-800-908-9946.

    Here’s how to check your tax transcript online:

    1. Visit and log in to your account. If you haven’t opened an account with the IRS, this will take some time as you’ll have to take multiple steps to confirm your identity.

    2. Once logged in to your account, you’ll see the Account Home page. Click View Tax Records.

    3. On the next page, click the Get Transcript button.

    4. Here you’ll see a drop-down menu asking the reason you need a transcript. Select Federal Tax and leave the Customer File Number field empty. Click the Go button.

    5. The following page will show a Return Transcript, Records of Account Transcript, Account Transcript and Wage & IncomeTranscript for the last four years. You’ll want the 2020 Account Transcript.

    6. This will open a PDF of your transcript: Focus on the Transactions section. What you’re looking for is an entry listed as Refund issued, and it should have a date in late May or June.

    How Long Will I Have To Wait For My Federal Refund Check To Arrive

    The IRS usually issues tax refunds within three weeks, but some taxpayers have been waiting months to receive their payments. If there are any errors, or if you filed a claim for an earned income tax credit or the child tax credit, the wait could be lengthy. If there is an issue holding up your return, the resolution “depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return,” according to its website.

    The date you get your tax refund also depends on how you filed your return. For example, with refunds going into your bank account via direct deposit, it could take an additional five days for your bank to post the money to your account. This means if it took the IRS the full 21 days to issue your check and your bank five days to post it, you could be waiting a total of 26 days to get your money. If you submitted a tax return by mail, the IRS says it could take six to eight weeks for your tax refund to arrive once it’s been processed.

The agency said it would start with individual tax returns first, followed by those with a filing status of married filing jointly and more complicated returns. Typically, unemployment compensation is considered taxable, but the credit makes it so that money is not counted as earned income for the year.

    Important to note is that the $10,200 credit only applies to those individuals with an adjusted gross income of less than $150,000. Those with an AGI of more than $150,000 will not be able to exclude any unemployment compensation. In addition, the $10,200 tax credit applies only to unemployment benefits received in 2020, and excludes benefits received in 2021.

    Irs Sending Out Another 15 Million Tax Refunds To People Who Overpaid On Unemployment Benefits

    The government is issuing another batch of refunds this week to taxpayers who received jobless aid last year and overpaid on taxes, the Internal Revenue Service announced.

    The agency said it is issuing 1.5 million tax refunds to Americans this week, with the typical refund around $1,600. The IRS said direct-deposit payments went out starting July 28 and paper checks started hitting mailboxes July 30.

    This is the fourth round of refunds related to unemployment aid that the IRS has issued since Congress changed the tax law this spring to allow formerly unemployed people to keep more of their benefits. The IRS sent out three previous rounds of payments in May, and earlier this month.

    Normally, unemployment benefits are subject to federal income tax. However, the American Rescue Plan, passed in March, decreed that up to $10,200 in jobless benefits would not be taxable. The change, passed after millions of jobless aid recipients already filed tax returns, meant that many were due refunds.

    The IRS previously said as many as 13 million people might be eligible for refunds. Since May, the agency has given back $10 billion to 8.7 million taxpayers, it said. The IRS plans to continue reviewing and adjusting tax returns over the summer.

    With the latest batch of payments on Nov. 1, the IRS has now issued more than 11.7 million unemployment compensation refunds totaling over $14.4 billion. The IRS announced it was doing the recalculations in phases, starting with single filers with no dependents and then for those who are married and filing jointly. You may be able to use Form W-4V to voluntarily have federal income taxes withheld from your payments. However, check with your state to see if it has its own form. If so, use the state form instead.

    WASHINGTON The Internal Revenue Service announced today it will issue another round of refunds this week to nearly 4 million taxpayers who overpaid their taxes on unemployment compensation received last year.

    The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which became law in March, excluded up to $10,200 in 2020 unemployment compensation from taxable income calculations. The exclusion applied to individuals and married couples whose modified adjusted gross income was less than $150,000.

    Refunds by direct deposit will begin July 14 and refunds by paper check will begin July 16. The IRS previously issued refunds related to unemployment compensation exclusion in May and June, and it will continue to issue refunds throughout the summer.

    To ease the burden on taxpayers, the IRS has been reviewing the Forms 1040 and 1040SR that were filed prior to the law’s enactment to identify those people who are due an adjustment. For taxpayers who overpaid, the IRS will either refund the overpayment, apply it to other outstanding taxes or other federal or state debts owed.

    For this round, the IRS identified approximately 4.6 million taxpayers who may be due an adjustment. Of that number, approximately 4 million taxpayers are expected to receive a refund. The refund average is $1,265, which means some will receive more and some will receive less.

    You may qualify for the tax break up to $10,200 of unemployment compensation if your modified adjusted gross income is less than $150,000 for 2020. If youre married, each qualifying spouse may exclude up to $10,200.

    If your MAGI exceeds the income threshold, you wont qualify for the tax exclusion and will need to pay taxes on any unemployment compensation you receive. Also, if you file Form 1040-NR, you cant claim the unemployment tax break for your spouse.

    If you have yet to file your 2020 tax return, you can claim the tax break up to $10,200 from your taxable income.
