What Time Does Unemployment Deposit Money In Ny

Don't Miss

Direct Deposit To Your Own Bank Account Or Prepaid Card

What you can do to advance the unemployment, direct deposit process

Similar to how you may have used direct deposit to receive your paycheck, you can have your money automatically sent to your checking or savings account or a prepaid card that you already own.

What you need to know

  • Benefits go directly to your own bank or credit union account or prepaid card
  • Access your benefits same as you already do with other money in that account
  • Benefits are sent to your account for free

What to watch out for

  • Look closely for this option when filling out unemployment forms
  • People without their own bank account or prepaid card must open one to take advantage of this option

With direct deposit, you receive your money quickly and safely, and you can manage your unemployment benefits just like any other funds in your account. It also eliminates the risk of paper checks getting lost or stolen, as well as the need to physically deposit or cash it at a bank or credit union.

If you prefer to use a prepaid card, direct deposit is generally an option, but youll want to check first with your card provider to find out if your card is eligible to receive direct deposit. If you dont already have a bank or credit union account or prepaid card, youd need to open a new account first, which many financial institutions are allowing you to do online.

No matter what state you live in, the following information is typically whats required for signing up:

How Can I Track My Unemployment Debit Card In The Mail

Your state’s unemployment website will inform you of when you can expect to receive your debit card. This can take a few weeks after you file your claim, so it’s a good idea to be careful with your budget until your card arrives. States typically use standard mail to send your card, so no tracking is available.

Other Debit Card Considerations

Checking purchases: The back of your debit card should include a customer service number as well as a website address. These services can provide you with statements that show you your recent purchases.

Minimizing fees: Some debit card companies, including those contracted by state unemployment departments, charge fees for certain activities, such as using an ATM or taking advantage of bill pay services. Make sure you understand these fees before you use your card, as well as ways that you can minimize or avoid fees entirely:

Tip

An alternative to an unemployment debit card is to request your benefits via direct deposit into a checking or savings account. There are usually no fees associated with the direct deposit, and you won’t have to worry about ATM limits, or finding a no-fee ATM when accessing your funds.

Your States Unemployment System Is Antiquated

According to reporting by The Washington Post, the District of Columbias unemployment website was based on 1950s programming language. It was also built in the early 2000s, before smartphones. That meant that anyone without access to a desktop or laptop computer has to make a claim by phone. Whats more, a single pandemic-related change to unemployment benefits took computer programmers more than two weeks to implement.

What Could Be Holding Up Your Payments

When youve reached a year on your unemployment claim, some people can just keep recertifying every week on their existing claim while others need to file a new claim. According to the DOL, you should have gotten an email or text message with instructions about what to do, and a DocuSign form to fill out. Thats the first tip.

1. Fill out the DocuSign form.

Whether you need to file a new claim or not, everyone needs to fill out the DocuSign form to continue receiving benefits. This is not the same thing as filing a new claim.

2. Triple check to make sure you dont need to file a new claim.

If you are receiving Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, or PUA, you can just keep recertifying and dont need to file a new claim. But if you are collecting traditional unemployment insurance , you may need to.

You need to file a new claim if you have made more than 10 times your weekly benefit in total over the last year from an employer.

For example, if your weekly benefit amount is $150, then 10 times that is $1,500. So, if youve gone back to work even temporarily and have made at least $1,500 in total in the span of the year when your claim has been open, then you need to file a new claim when you reach your BYE date. Once again, this means $1,500 in total, not just in one week.

This DOL fact sheet may be helpful.

Important note: New claims can take two to three weeks to process, and your payments may get backed up.

How Long Does It Take To Get Unemployment Money On My Debit Card

The time it takes to get your first payment via debit card depends on where you live. For example, it can take four weeks for someone in Texas to receive their first payment, while recipients in Washington state can expect to receive it about two weeks after being approved for benefits. Your state should tell you when you can expect the payment to be added to your card’s balance.

Once your benefits begin, most states send payments every two weeks after you have certified your continued eligibility for unemployment benefits. This means that you either call into a voicemail system or log in online and answer questions about whether you have been employed, any money that you have earned and whether you have made efforts to find a new job. Every state is different, but in many cases, a deposit will be made within a day or two after you certify.

Do This To Keep Your Checks

2020 Unemployment Rate and Jobless Claims Continue Rising Making the ...

Once your unemployment benefits begin appearing, you’ll want to keep them. But you must take steps to do so. Skip even one, and your checks could stop for good. To keep your benefits, you must:

  • Look for work. Benefits are for people ready and willing to work. Keep a detailed record of your job hunt, including the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of the companies you contacted about a new job. You may not be asked to provide this form every week, but it’s best to keep it handy just in case you are asked for it.
  • Accept a job, if possible. If you’re offered a job appropriate for your training and experience, and the salary is within normal limits, you must take that opportunity. If you don’t because you’re not ready or don’t want to, you could lose benefits.
  • Appear when asked. If you have an appointment made to discuss your benefits, you must appear. And if you’re called or otherwise tapped for information, you must provide it.

Every week, you must contact the Department of Labor and claim your benefits. You can do that via the website, or you can call 1-888-581-5812. Officials say most people claim benefits on Sunday for the week that ends on Sunday. Officials also say you’ll get the quickest response if you use the website to certify your status.
