Overall An Improving Outlook

The agency said the pandemic had stripped 1,269,200 jobs from the states economy between February to April 2020, although the employment market regained 688,300 of those jobs as the year unfolded.

Jobs are continuing to be added back into our economy, and people are going back into work, Adrienne Johnston, chief economist for the DEO, said in a call with reporters Monday. We are actually seeing a reduction in unemployed. People are getting jobs.

In a note, the agency said the report reflected revised historical data that are part of an annual benchmarking process that takes place nationally in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Labor. As a result, Floridas unemployment rate for December 2020 was revised downward by a full point from 6.1% to 5.1%.

While revisions are normal, changes that drastic are not.

This was an incredibly unusual business cycle, said Sean Snaith, director of the Institute for Economic Forecasting at the University of Central Florida. Its not surprising the labor market data being measured would be subject to larger revisions than would normally be the case.

Large numbers of people had to leave the workforce, for example, to care for their children after schools were shut down. Surveys used to help estimate employment figures did not pick up some of this unusual behavior.

Between the three counties, there were roughly 24,300 unemployed workers in September.

Statewide, that number totaled 517,000 out of a labor force of 10,593,000.

While the state has seen big gains over the past year, employment has not yet reached where it stood in February 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic hit and wreaked havoc on the state’s economy, according to Eagle.

Wage Base And Tax Rates

UI tax is paid on each employee’s wages up to a maximum annual amount. That amount, known as the taxable wage base, is subject to change. In contrast to other states, the wage base actually decreased in Florida in the last few years. Currently, the amount is stable at $7,000. However, it’s always possible the rate will change again in the future.

The state UI tax rate for new employers also can change from one year to the next. However, in recent years it has been stable at 2.7%. That remains the rate until an employer has reported for approximately 10 quarters . Established employers are subject to a lower or higher rate than new employers depending on an “experience rating.” This means, among other things, whether your business has ever had any employees who made claims for state unemployment benefits.

    About State Unemployment Tax

When you have employees, you must pay federal and state unemployment taxes. These taxes fund unemployment programs and pay out benefits to employees who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.

Generally, unemployment taxes are employer-only taxes, meaning you do not withhold the tax from employee wages. However, some states require that you withhold additional money from employee wages for state unemployment taxes.

State unemployment tax is a percentage of an employees wages. Each state sets a different range of tax rates. Your tax rate might be based on factors like your industry, how many former employees received unemployment benefits, and experience.

You pay SUTA tax to the state where the work is taking place. If your employees all work in the state your business is located in, you will pay SUTA tax to the state your business is located in. But if your employees work in different states, you will pay SUTA tax to each state an employee works in.

States also set wage bases for unemployment tax. This means you will only contribute unemployment tax until the employee earns above a certain amount.

State unemployment taxes are referred to as SUTA tax or state unemployment insurance . Or, they may be referred to as reemployment taxes .
