How Much Do You Get From Washington Unemployment
In Washington, the most you can receive each week in unemployment is $929 per week. The actual amount depends on your earnings during the base year.
Washington doesn’t have a set number of weeks for unemployment. Instead, it allows you to claim unemployment benefits until you hit the lesser of:
- 26 times the weekly benefit
- One-third of your gross income during the base year
To get an idea of your maximum employment benefit, add the earnings from your two highest-income quarters. Then, multiply that amount by 0.0385. If the amount is between $295 and $929, it will be your weekly benefit amount. If it’s higher than $929, your weekly benefit will be $929.
If the number is lower than $295, the state will multiply it by 4 and divide the result by 52. Compare that number to $295 your weekly benefit will be whichever is lower.

A.Yes, report the holiday pay during the week in which the holiday occurred. Do notwait until you are paid for the holiday to report it.
If your vacation pay was accrued and there are no specific dates attached to it, you do not need to report it. However, if your vacation pay was for specific days, it is deductible, and you need to report it. Be sure to report it for the week in which the vacation days occurred.
Fired And Still Eligible
If the ESD denies the claim for benefits because you were discharged for cause, you may still be eligible for benefits. You may have been discharged for a one-time incident. The state may not consider this to be misconduct. However, severe violations of policy, like violence against another employee, may be considered misconduct even though it happened only once.
Your former employer will receive notice when you file a claim. The state will ask them about the circumstances of your separation from work, and they may offer information to counter your side of the story, resulting in a denial. You may have to exercise your right to appeal.

What Are The Payment Methods Available
WA unemployment benefits can be paid via direct deposit or debit card. If you choose to receive your benefits via debit card, you will be issued a Visa card that can be used anywhere Visa is accepted. Do I Qualify For Unemployment Benefits
To qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington, you must be able to work and be separated from your job for a reason that the state’s Employment Security Department accepts. The standard reasons are: laid off, quit with good cause, terminated due to no fault of your own, or still working less than full-time.
The ESD has also clarified several situations related to COVID-19 in which you may qualify for unemployment:
- You’re self-quarantining due to guidance issued by a medical professional or public health official after you were exposed to COVID-19, but you’re not sick, and you’re not receiving paid sick leave.
- Your employer goes out of business.
- You’re temporarily laid off.
- Your employer temporarily shuts down, and you’re not receiving paid sick leave or paid time off.
If you need to take time off because you contracted COVID-19, the ESD advises using paid sick leave. If that is not available, you may be able to get paid family and medical leave.
The ESD normally requires that you worked at least 680 hours in covered employment during your base year, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters. However, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act has expanded who is eligible for unemployment benefits, so you may qualify even if you haven’t completed this requirement.

What Happens If Unemployment Claims In Washington Are Denied
If you’re denied unemployment, you can appeal it within 30 days through your eServices account. If you prefer a mail or fax appeal, follow the instructions on your denial letter. Continue to file weekly claims during the appeals process.
If the ESD changes its decision, you’ll get a notice by mail. Otherwise, they’ll send the appeal to the Washington Office of Administrative Hearings . An official will schedule a phone hearing or a Brief Adjudicative Proceeding, and the judge will make a decision. After that, you’ll have one final opportunity to appeal you can find instructions on the OAH order.

During the coronavirus crisis, standby & partial unemployment benefits are now available to part-time employees who have worked at least 680 hours during their base year.

ESD has said they are currently experiencing a glitch that means workers who apply for standby may receive a notification that their application has been denied. If a clerical error is identified on an application, it can be flagged by ESD. A flagged application is either directed to the adjudication process or denied outright. ESD states on its website that most unemployment-insurance applicants receive benefit checks or a decision explaining why they are not eligible within three weeks of their initial application, but that a small percentage of claims requires additional fact-finding, or adjudication, to determine if the individual is eligible for benefits.
With the scale and rapidity of the unemployment spike caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the timeliness of ESDs adjudication process was hampered, the agency said.
According to an update published by ESD on April 30th, a total of 787,533 distinct individuals had filed for unemployment insurance since the week ending on March 7th when COVID-19 job losses began.
Following the launch of the additional benefits under the CARES Act passed by Congress, the state saw the single largest week of claims in history with nearly 1.5 million initial claims filed. For context, ESD points out, the week ending March 7 before the crisis hit saw only 6,584 initial claims filed.
Then on May 11, ESD launched Operation 100% an effort to resolve all claims that were submitted to ESD between March 8 and June 18.
When Operation 100% was announced, ESD said that roughly 57,000 individuals, or 7% of applicants, had been waiting, some for many weeks, for their claim to be approved.
Coronavirus Aid Relief And Economic Security Act
The U.S. House of Representatives on March 27, 2020, passed the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act to provide financial relief to individuals and businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. President Donald Trump signed the legislation on March 27. Among the provisions in the act, Congress earmarked roughly $260 billion to expand unemployment insurance benefits across the country. The act supplemented state unemployment insurance payments by increasing the number of weeks an individual could receive benefits and by providing individuals with an additional $600 per week on top of what they would normally receive.
