How To File A Claim For Unemployment Benefits In Missouri

Unemployment applications overwhelm systems in Kansas, Missouri

You may file your claim for unemployment benefits in Missouri electronically or by phone. You can find contact information and online filing information at the website of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Once the Division receives your application, it will send you a Notice of Initial Determination of Status as an Insured Worker. This document will include your potential weekly benefit amount.

Overpayments From Another State

If you have an overpayment of unemployment benefits in another state, that state may request that we send your Texas benefits to them until your overpayment is paid. If the overpayment from another state is collectable by Texas, we will notify you. Continue to submit biweekly payment requests so we can apply each eligible payment toward the overpayment. After you repay the overpayment, we will release any remaining payable benefits to you, as long as you are still requesting payment.

Complete, print and sign the online request for reconsideration of an EI decision form.

Submit it to Service Canada in person or by mail within 30 days after the date the decision was communicated to you. There is no fee to request a reconsideration.

If you submit your request after 30 days, you must provide a reason for the delay. Service Canada can still accept your request if we determine that there is a reasonable explanation.

How Do I File

If youre eligible, youll need the following:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Any amount you were paid in the past week, before taxes and deductions
  • The name and mailing address of each job you worked in the past 18 months
  • The dates you started and ended work at each of those jobs.

Once youve got all that handy, head to uinteract.labor.mo.gov, create an account and file your claim. If your job loss is related to coronavirus issues, make sure to check a box that says COVID-19 in your application to waive a requirement to search for a new job amid the crisis.

Youll need to file a separate request for payment each week.

Missouri provides benefits for up to 20 weeks, which can be extended to 33 weeks under the federal provisions.

The state will pay you up to $320 per week, and the federal government will provide $600 on top of whatever you get from the state for each week you’re on employment prior to July 31.

Payments requested the week of March 29 will be the first to include the extra $600.

Benefits can be paid within 22 days unless there is an issue with your eligibility, which on average can take 4-6 weeks to resolve, according to the state labor department.

You should continue filing weekly requests for payment even if you have not yet received benefits.

About Unemployment Extension Programs In Missouri

Missouri federal unemployment extension programs are activated by need during adverse economic conditions in the state that have resulted in high unemployment. If you are wondering What can I do to extend unemployment benefits? you must first be eligible for regular benefits in order to be considered for extended assistance. However, even this does not guarantee that you will be selected for an unemployment benefits extension. During times of economic crisis, the state government and the Department of Labor in Missouri may open the following unemployment extension programs:

  • The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program
  • The Extended Benefits Program

If the first emergency unemployment extension program is exhausted, and the economic situation remains adverse in relation to the unemployment rate, the government will activate the Extended Benefits program. This is a continuation of the EUC program and serves to provide additional weeks of benefits to those in need.

Note: If you qualified for the EUC program and received an unemployment benefits extension through it, you may also be eligible for the EB program. However, you do not need to officially reapply. You only need to have all your benefits from the EUC program used up in order to continue on to the EB program. In any case, this situation only applies when the unemployment compensation extension programs are active.

Overpayment Notice On Id Theft Claims

If you receive a Statement of Overpaid Unemployment Benefits Account for an unemployment benefits claim that you did not file, you should report the ID theft claim on TWCs online Fraud Submission portal. See Unemployment Benefits ID Theft for more information.

Once TWC confirms that a claim was filed using a stolen ID, the individual named on the claim is not responsible for any overpayment and the employers tax rate or reimbursement is not affected. Once ID theft is confirmed, any future overpayment statements will be suspended. However, you may continue to receive billing statements while the investigation is ongoing.

You do not need to respond to these statements.

It is important to promptly repay an overpayment because:

  • The overpayment stays on your claim record until you repay it in full.
  • If you apply for benefits,TWC will apply each eligible payment toward reducing your overpayment until the overpayment is repaid.
  • The Texas State Comptroller can recover your overpayment by withholding certain payments to you. That means the state cannot pay you lottery winnings, unclaimed property, unemployment benefits, or state job-related expenses, except for wages, until you repay the overpayment in full.
  • Some state funding for college students cannot be released until you repay the overpayment in full.

Types Of Disability Policies

There are two types of disability policies.

  • Short-term policies may pay for up to two years. Most last for a few months to a year.

  • Long-term policies may pay benefits for a few years or until the disability ends.

Employers who offer coverage may provide short-term coverage, long-term coverage, or both.

If you plan to buy your own policy, shop around and ask:

  • How long do benefits last?

  • How much money will the policy pay?

Who Is Eligible For Unemployment Benefits In Missouri

To be eligible for unemployment insurance in Missouri, you must have been working a job recently, and you must be currently out of work through no fault of your own.

Letâs look at the specific requirements, and weâll explain them further below.

  • You must have lost your job through no fault of your own
  • You must be available to work and actively searching for work
  • You must have been earning a minimum amount during your the previous year

Letâs take a deeper look into the requirements for you to claim unemployment benefits.

What does it mean to be out of work through no fault of my own?

To be out of work through no fault of yours means that you had to quit working for reasons that were beyond your control.

For example, during an economic downturn, companies often have to lay off a part of their workforce, even if those employees were performing at a satisfactory level.

Or letâs say you were let go because the plant or factory where you were working had to close down.

Another example might be that your company has implemented a new system of work, and you donât currently have the required skills to operate within that new system.

These are examples of scenarios where you would be eligible for unemployment benefits.

But that doesnât necessarily mean that youâre automatically disqualified if you quit or you were fired.

What if I quit my job or got fired?

If you were fired, it would depend on the circumstances under which you were let go.
