For example, you might qualify for unemployment benefits if you are partially disabled while receiving partial long-term disability payments. Even so, it is best to talk with our long-term disability lawyer;before you apply for either unemployment or long-term disability benefits.
It is more likely that you might qualify for unemployment benefits followed by long-term disability benefits or vice versa. However, the application process can be tricky. If you file a second application for benefits immediately after the termination of the other benefit, your statements from your first application could impact your second application. Will Applying For Social Security Benefits Affect Unemployment
While unemployment benefits will not affect Social Security payment amounts, unless the payments exceed the SSI maximum, the opposite is true under some circumstances. What If I Attempt To Return To Work But I End Up Needing To Go Out On Disability Again
If you return to work and are able to perform your regular or customary job for more than 60 days, then your disability benefit period is considered ended.; If you stop working again due to disability, you must file a new claim for SDI, and re-establish your eligibility for benefits as of the date of the new claim. If you are eligible for SDI as of the date of your new claim, you are entitled to a new benefit period of up to 52 weeks.
If you return to work for more than 60 days, but do not perform your regular or customary work due to your disability for example, you work only light duty or only part-time you may be able to continue your prior disability claim. You will need to show EDD that you did not perform your regular or customary work when you attempted to return to work.
If you return to work for fewer than 60 days, and stop working due to the same disability, you are considered to be within the same disability benefits period. You may continue receiving benefits under your original claim and the 7-day waiting period required by these claims will be waived.

When Do Va Benefits Not Count As Income
The IRS defines Gross Income in Section 61 as: Compensation for services, including fees, commissions, and similar items.
According to the IRS, disability benefits received from the VA should not be included in your reported gross income and are not taxable at the federal level.
Payments that are considered disability benefits include:
- Disability compensation and pension payments for disabilities paid either to veterans or their families
- Grants for homes designed for wheelchair living
- Grants for motor vehicles for veterans who lost their sight or the use of their limbs
- Benefits under a dependent-care assistance program
- Education, training, and subsistence allowances
- Veterans insurance proceeds and dividends paid either to veterans or their beneficiaries, including the proceeds of a veterans endowment policy paid before death
- Interest on insurance dividends left on deposit with the VA
- Benefits under a dependent-care assistance program
- The death gratuity paid to a survivor of a member of the Armed Forces who died after September 10, 2001
- Payments made under the compensated work therapy program
- Any bonus payment by a state or political subdivision because of service in a combat zone

Changes To Support You During Covid
Temporary changes have been made to the EI program to help you access EI sickness benefits. The following changes are in effect until September 25, 2021, and could apply to you:
- the waiting period may be waived
- you dont need to get a medical certificate
- you only need 120 insured hours to qualify for benefits because you’ll get a one-time credit of 480 insured hours to help you meet the required 600 insured hours of work
- you’ll receive at least $500 per week before taxes but you could receive more
- if you received the CERB, the 52-week period to accumulate insured hours will be extended
