Exemption From Work Search Requirements
To qualify for a work search exemption, you must meet one of the following criteria and have the exemption approved by the Unemployment Insurance Division. We will notify you in writing if you are exempt from the work search requirements.
- Be on a temporary layoff with a definite return-to-work date
- Be an active member in good standing of a union with a non-discriminatory hiring hall
- Be in a TWC-approved training program that includes work search exemption

When you are collecting unemployment under normal circumstances, you must be available for work and actively seeking employment. You must be ready, willing, available, and able to work, and you may be required to report on your job search activities.
Because the unemployment job search and work requirements vary by state, you should check your states website to verify your compliance, but there are some general guidelines.

Outdated Forms Cause Confusion
There was some confusion because said you have to update us on the job hunt every two weeks, and I knew that wasn’t the case, Nick says. I knew specifically it to the state but it was still on the website.
Per a handbook published by the state on April 17, questions about work search requirements were kept as is on the unemployment web site, in order to cater to residents who are receiving benefits outside of the scope of the coronavirus.
“Because unemployment insurance is a temporary bridge while an individual tries to find other employment, our system provides this question for claimants who started receiving UI benefits prior to COVID-19,” it reads. “However, with the changes in state and federal law to assist during COVID-19, you can answer the question honestly if you answer no you will not be penalized for not completing a job search.”
The application itself is often an interactive form that people fill out by logging into their state’s unemployment insurance portal. States might be less inclined to change the language in their forms since the waiver is a temporary emergency measure states will presumably reinstate the job search requirement when the crisis passes. Plus, the abrupt nature of it all means some states might not have had time to update their forms to reflect the waiver.
“There was an issue with claims still showing work search requirements, but we believe all those have been corrected,” the spokesperson told Money in an email.
Work Search Required For All Claimants
To receive unemployment benefits, you are required to be actively seeking work. Under state law, all claimants are required to make three work search contacts each week and keep a record of their work search activities.
To receive benefits:
- You must make contact with at least three different employers each week and keep a record of your work search, as is required by state law. One of the three weekly job contacts can be satisfied by attending an approved reemployment activity offered by a NCWorks Career Center or a partnering agency.
- You are required to register with a jobseeker account on NCWorks.gov, North Carolinas online portal for employment and training services. Jobseekers can use NCWorks.gov to search and apply for jobs, access labor market information and find opportunities for workforce training.

- Contact employers who have a position matching your qualifications, knowledge, abilities or skills. Employer contact must be for the purpose of obtaining employment.
- Participate in approved and verified reemployment activities. May count for no more than one of the three required contacts each week.

The Work Search Requirement For Regular Unemployment
If you are required to look for work, you must do one or more of the following activities to be eligible for benefits. We encourage you to document your efforts.
We will notify you to make sure youre aware of the specific requirements for your claim.
Note: If you file a new claim for regular unemployment on July 11 or after, you must register on CalJOBS.
- You participate in an employer-sponsored Work Sharing program.
- You have a definite job promise within a reasonable time.
- You are on a temporary layoff due to inclement weather or another reason and will be returning to work within 30 days.
- You have a specialized skill with limited job prospects, and youve exhausted your potential job sources.
- Your labor market has been virtually eliminated because of a trade dispute.
- Youre unemployed due to a seasonal shutdown in your industry with little chance of finding other work.
We will determine if an exemption applies to you based on the information you provide when you certify for benefits each week.
How To Fill Out Job Search Log For Unemployment

Requirement To Search For Full
In order to receive unemployment benefits, you are required to complete at least three work search activities for each week in which you are a claiming benefits. The list of activities they qualify as work search requirments are available when you click on the link here.
Activities that qualify include attending a job fair, attending a work one workshop completing a career related assessment and interviewing for a job to name a few. You must keep your own log of your work search activities as you may be required to submit this information to the department at any time. You may also visit the Indiana Unemployment website for more information about your work search requirements.
If you have a valid work search waiver on file with the department due to your union hall membership enrollment in training approved by the department or job attachment as determined by the department. You are not required to complete work search activities.

Logging Your Work Search Efforts
To ensure the activities you complete can be verified by DES, you should keep a log of verifiable information about each activity in case DES needs additional information, such as:
- Employer contact information
- Name and title of person contacted
- Documentation of use of an online career tool
- Confirmation of an online job board submission
- Networking event name, date, and location
- Specifics of job-related education or other skills development activity
- Reemployment service in which you participated
- What action you took
- How you applied for the position
- The type of work you were looking for
- The person you contacted, with a telephone number, email address or other reliable contact information
Work search can and should include a mixture of activities, including contacting employers and interviewing for jobs. The more activities you complete, the sooner you will return to work. Document Work Search Activities
You must document at least your minimum number of required activities every week. However, we recommend that you document all your work search efforts every week that you are receiving benefits. For unemployment purposes, a week begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday.
We may request your work search log for any week or number of weeks at any time during your benefit year. Keep all your work search logs for your entire benefit year, or for as long as you are receiving unemployment benefits, whichever is longer. If you are selected to submit your log, we send a notice to you.
Send a copy to TWC only if we request it, using the address or fax number we give you. You can also upload your work search log using our secure online UI Submission Portal. Once received, we will verify your activities.
All work search information you provide to TWC must be true and accurate. Intentionally giving false statements about work search activities constitutes fraud and can result in loss of benefits, overpayments on your claim, and criminal prosecution. Weekly vouchers for unemployment insurance benefits are available each week beginning Sunday at 12 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. You will have until 8:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Saturday of each week to complete the voucher.
The uplink claim and self-service homepage will be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. However, you will not be able to file weekly vouchers between 9 p.m. and 11:59 Eastern Standard Time on Saturday of each week. Apply For And Accept Suitable Full
To continue to be eligible for unemployment benefits, you must apply for and be able to accept a suitable full-time job. TWC determines if a job is suitable based on:
- Your experience, qualifications, and training
- The working conditions and pay for similar work in your area
- Any risks to your health, safety, or morals
- The distance to work from your home and local commuting patterns
- How long you have been unemployed
If you do any of the following, TWC may disqualify you for benefits:
- Refuse a TWC or Workforce Solutions referral for a suitable job
- Refuse to apply for a suitable job
- Refuse to accept a suitable job

During your first eight weeks of unemployment, you must be willing to accept a suitable job that pays at least 90 percent of your normal wage. After you have been unemployed for eight weeks, you must be willing to accept a suitable job that pays at least 75 percent of your normal wage.
Reminder: When you apply for a job, you should not ask for a wage that is higher than what other people earn for that type of job in your area. Are we required to apply for a job vacancy? Job Search Starting July 11, 2021, more people will be expected to look for work in order to maintain their job security. You are not required to apply for a job for the weeks of unemployment that started before July 11.
Your Work Search Requirements
The law says that people getting regular Unemployment Insurance or Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits must look for work. You must complete certain work search requirements. These requirements were paused during the pandemic. They are being phased back in this summer.
