Benefit Year End Date
A regular unemployment insurance benefit year ends 12 months after the claim started.
You cannot be paid for weeks of unemployment after your benefit year ends, even if you have a balance on your claim. Continue to certify for benefits if you have weeks available within your benefit year.
You can reapply for a new claim if you earned enough wages in the last 18 months and are still unemployed or working part time. Apply online, and we will notify you when your new claim is processed. This usually takes two to three weeks.

If you served in the military, worked for a federal government agency, or worked in a state outside of California within the last 18 months, you must reapply for a new claim by phone, mail, or fax.
You do not need to reapply if you did not earn enough wages in the last 18 months to establish a new claim.
To find your benefit year end date, log in to UI OnlineSMand view your Claim Summary. Your benefit year end date is 12 months after the start of your Benefit Year.

Federal Unemployment Benefit Extensions For Expired Pua Peuc And Extra $300 Programs News And Updates On Missing And Retroactive Back Payments
With the expiry of federal enhanced unemployment benefit programs like PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC and $100 MEUC after September 6th 2021 in all states, there has been considerable chatter around what happens next and when missing or back payments will be made.
The cessation of pandemic unemployment benefits without another extension to the end of 2021, is obviously a big impact to millions of jobless or under-employed claimants that will result in them losing all benefits under the PUA, PEUC or supplementary $300 FPUC programs.
Claimants will still however have access to traditional state unemployment. But this will leave many in the lurch since they wouldnt qualify for traditional state unemployment under current rules. And even if they do qualify, in many states the maximum amount of state unemployment benefits is barely enough to live on.

If I Am Eligible For Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Do I Need To First Apply For Unemployment Insurance
States must have a process for determining that Pandemic Unemployment Assistance applicants are ineligible for regular unemployment benefits, which may not include filing a regular claim as a first step. States are not required to take and adjudicate a full claim for regular unemployment insurance benefits to meet this requirement. While states are not prohibited from taking a full claim, to facilitate expedited claims processing the U.S. Department of Labor has discouraged states from doing so. Individuals should apply using the states PUA application process and, in states that have not yet established that process, must wait until it is established.

My Regular Unemployment Compensation Benefits Do Not Provide Adequate Support Given The Unprecedented Economic Challenges Caused By The Covid
Yes, depending on how your state chooses to implement the CARES Act. The new law creates the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program , which provides an additional $600 per week to individuals who are collecting regular UC and Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Servicemembers , PEUC, PUA, Extended Benefits , Short Time Compensation , Trade Readjustment Allowances , Disaster Unemployment Assistance , and payments under the Self Employment Assistance program). This benefit is available for weeks of unemployment beginning after the date on which your state entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor and ending with weeks of unemployment ending on or before July 31, 2020.

Some states dropped out of the federal programs earlier this summer to incentivize workers to find jobs. But an estimated 5.4 million gig workers, contractors, and others not covered by traditional unemployment insurance are no longer covered, and 3.9 million on extended benefits are also out.
Now comes the evidence portion of several theories. Were the extended benefits keeping people from a serious job search, as some economists contend? Did the Covid-19 surge intimidate potential workers from seeking a job? And what jobs will be available in an economy that is still recovering from the pandemic, which saw a number of businesses permanently close and/or reduce work forces to accommodate the new levels of spending by consumers?

The Labor Departments Producer Price Index comes out on Friday, updating the state of inflation in the US at the producer level. It will provide a clue as to whether supply chain constraints and materials shortages have continued to push prices higher.

States Not Extending Enhanced Benefits
Per the latest update no state unemployment agency has extended enhanced unemployment benefits, despite already approved stimulus funds being available for states to use and President Biden calling for the states to do so.
The main reason apparently is the overly high cost of running these enhanced UI programs , which was originally paid for using federal funding allocated to administer these programs. The cost of running and administering these programs was apparently running into the hundreds of millions of dollars in large states.
Further extending benefits to a relatively small percentage of the population would be politically hard to justify given the falling unemployment rate and persistent issues business are facing with filling open vacancies.

What Happens If Benefits Lapse
Stettner says while the focus remains on ending the $300 boost, allowing PUA and PEUC programs to end would cause a “unemployment cliff” for roughly 7.5 million people and their families after September 6.
As of mid-July, roughly 9.4 million people were drawing benefits from one of these programs, making up more than 72% of Americans collecting unemployment insurance overall.
Some long-term unemployed people claiming PEUC could move over to Extended Benefits, a federally funded aid program that triggers “on” depending on their state’s unemployment rate.

States have different requirements for unemployment recipients to prove they are ready to work. Some states have waived these requirements. To find your states requirements, visit your states Unemployment Insurance website and look for a COVID-19 page or an FAQ page, or search for register for work. If you have trouble finding the information, contact your local American Job Center . You can also check your states job bank to see if registration there is required.
What If I Have A Claim Balance Or Weeks Remaining After September When 2021 Unemployment Benefit Extensions For Pua Peuc And $300 Weekly Boost End
With federal unemployment benefits expiring after the week ending September 4th in states that didnt end pandemic benefits early, many are asking what will happen to their active claim balance if they have weeks left after the expiry date.
The answer unfortunately is that active balances under the PUA and PEUC programs will expire or go unused without any grace period unless another extension to the enhanced unemployment benefit program is funded at a federal or state level. At this stage the Biden administration is not extending benefits at a federal level and leaving this decision to state leaders.
This is despite many claimants, who started or continued claims this year under one or more of the extended federal unemployment programs, having remaining weeks come September 6th . Contacting your state unemployment agency for remaining balances wont be of much help either as the sudden end of benefit payments is per federal law as stated in DOL guidelines.
Note that PEUC claimants may also be able to move to a states extended benefits program, if available. Further, per guidance from the Biden administration, states can use APRA COVID relief funds to expand coverage of traditional state unemployment programs.

The Delta Variant Is On The Rise As Millions Stand To Lose All Of Their Unemployment Benefits
Those millions of jobless workers have been collecting benefits through two pandemic-era federal programs: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance , which expanded eligibility for benefits to gig workers and self-employed workers, among others and Pandemic Extended Unemployment Compensation , which extended how long recipients could collect benefits for.
Per the reportâs estimates, 4.2 million workers will be collecting PUA when benefits expire, and 3.3 million will be collecting PEUC.
Then thereâs more than 3 million workers who are still receiving $300 weekly supplements to state unemployment insurance. When thatâs cut off, $3.5 billion less will be flowing through the economy.
Stettner said it would make more sense to maintain benefits until we reach closer to pre-pandemic levels of unemployment not when millions are still filing unemployment claims.
Senate Democrats are in the early stages of assembling a $3.5 trillion party-line package that isnât likely to attract any GOP votes. That means all 50 Senate Democrats must stick together for the package to pass over unified GOP opposition in the Senate.
So far, an extension of federal unemployment benefits seems unlikely. But in the weeks ahead, Democrats may recognize the dire situation facing many jobless Americans.
And that extension, if it comes to fruition, would likely come in the reconciliation bill. Stettner said it would be better late than never.

The seasonally adjusted nationwide initial claims figure of 232,000 cited above for the week ending Feb. 19, 2022, was derived from an unadjusted figure of 214,873. The unadjusted figure fell by 24,824 from 239,697 in the prior week. However, the normal seasonal factors observed at this time of year should have led to a decline of 7,928 from the prior week to 231,769 in the week ending Feb. 19, 2022, all else equal.
