How To Check Your Irs Transcript For Clues About Your Refund
The IRS says eligible individuals shouldve received Form 1099-G from their state unemployment agency showing in Box 1 the total unemployment compensation paid in 2020. Some states may issue separate forms depending on the jobless benefits for example, if you received federal pandemic unemployment assistance, or PUA.
One way to know if a refund has been issued is to wait for the letter that the IRS is sending taxpayers whose returns are corrected. Those letters, issued within 30 days of the adjustment, will tell you if it resulted in a refund or if it was used to offset debt. The IRS says not to call the agency.
An immediate way to see if the IRS processed your refund is by viewing your tax records online. You can also request a copy of your transcript by mail or through the IRS automated phone service by calling 1-800-908-9946.

The Irs Will Begin Issuing Refunds In May For An Unemployment Tax Break
Taxpayers who received unemployment benefits last year but who filed their federal tax returns before a new tax break became available could receive an automatic refund as early as May, the Internal Revenue Service said on Wednesday.
The latest pandemic relief legislation signed into law on March 11, in the thick of tax season made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax-free in 2020 for people with modified adjusted incomes of less than $150,000.
But some Americans had already filed their tax returns by March and have been waiting for official agency guidance. Millions of U.S. workers filed for unemployment last year, but the I.R.S. said it was still determining how many workers affected by the tax change had already filed their tax returns.
On Wednesday, the I.R.S. confirmed that it would automatically recalculate the correct amount of benefits subject to taxation and any overpayment will be refunded or applied to any other outstanding taxes owed. The first refunds are expected to be issued in May and will continue into the summer.
The I.R.S. said it would begin processing the simpler returns first, or those eligible for up to $10,200 in excluded benefits, and then would turn to returns for joint filers and others with more complex returns.

On April 6, 2021, the Department of Taxation issued the tax alert Ohio Income Tax Update: Changes in how Unemployment Benefits are taxed for Tax Year 2020. This tax alert provided guidance related to the federal deduction for certain unemployment benefits.
For taxpayers who filed federal and Ohio tax returns without the unemployment benefits deduction and are now waiting for the IRS to issue a refund based on the deduction, the Department said it would issue additional guidance when more details were available from the IRS. Recently, the IRS has issued additional guidance related to this topic.
Accordingly, the Department would like to issue the following guidance to taxpayers who filed federal and Ohio tax returns without the unemployment benefits deduction and are now waiting for the IRS to issue a refund. After the IRS makes the adjustment, the taxpayer must do all of the following:

If you file your return over 60 days late, youll have to pay a $435 fine or 100% of the tax you owe – whichever is less.

The IRS will automatically adjust your tax return if you qualify for the unemployment tax break, which may affect your eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, American Opportunity Tax Credit, Premium Tax Credit and the Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return.
If you didnt claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, but may now be eligible for them, the IRS will send notices by mail requesting additional information to determine if you qualify. What Is The Unemployment Compensation
Under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, Americans who received unemployment compensation in 2020 received relief.
For individuals, it excludes up to $10,200 of their unemployment compensation from their gross income, if their modified adjusted gross income is less than $150,000.
For married individuals filing a joint tax return, this exclusion of up to $10,200 applies to each spouse.
The IRS continues to review tax year 2020 returns and process corrections for taxpayers who paid taxes on unemployment compensation, to exclude the compensation from income if eligible.
How Long Will You Have To Wait
Tax returns are opened and processed in the order received.
The IRS says its processed all error free refund returns received prior to April 2021 and continues to work the returns that need to be manually reviewed due to errors.
Its continuing to reroute tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available.
As the return is processed, whether it was filed electronically or on paper, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the recovery rebate credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud.
The IRS says if it can fix it without contacting you, the agency will.
If more information is needed or you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, the IRS will write you a letter.
The resolution of these issues could take 90 to 120 days depending on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.

How To Prepare For Your 2021 Tax Bill
You have the option of having income tax withheld from your unemployment benefits so you dont have to pay it all at once when you file your tax returnbut it wont happen automatically. You must complete and submit Form W-4V to the authority thats paying your benefits. Withheld amounts appear in box 4 of your Form 1099-G.
Federal law limits the amount you can have withheld from benefits to 10%. This may not be enough to adequately cover taxes on the benefits you received. If youve returned to work, you can opt to have extra tax withheld from your paychecks through the end of the year to help cover taxes owed on your unemployment benefits as well as your regular pay.
Your other option is to make advance estimated quarterly payments of any tax you think you might owe on your benefits. You have until Jan. 15, to make estimated tax payments on any benefits you receive between September and December the prior tax year. In fact, you must do so if sufficient tax wasnt withheld from your unemployment benefit payments. You could be charged a tax penalty if you dont pay as you go through either additional withholding or estimated payments during the tax year.
The tax you owe on your unemployment benefits might be minimal depending on how much you received. This is because unemployment doesnât replace 100% of your previously earned compensation.
What To Do If You Havent Filed Your Taxes Yet
If you havent filed your 2020 taxes yet, theres nothing extra you need to do in order to take advantage of the new law. For taxpayers who plan to file their taxes online using tax preparation software, all you need to do is respond to questions concerning your unemployment compensation when preparing your return. Tax preparation software has already been updated to reflect the change in the law.
If you didnt pay any income tax on unemployment income in 2020, you wont be responsible for these payments when you file your taxes.
