EDD Claim Form: How to Fill Out Your Unemployment Insurance Claim Form Update for Unemployment Check

The good news, particularly for tech-savvy millennials, is that states are really trying to move as much processing online as possible, and that’s been happening for a while. In most states, online applications are strongly encouraged, Evermore says.

The Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop site has a helpful tool where you can look up each state’s direct unemployment website and contact information.

Yet because of the influx of people applying as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, several states are having trouble with their unemployment sites crashing.

“That’s totally to be expected right now in this completely unprecedented period where all of a sudden, everyone is unemployed on the same day,” Evermore says. But keep trying, she says.

In cases where you can’t get through online, you can also call. Keep in mind that in many states, whether you call or go online, you can only start an application during normal business hours. Hawaii, for example, restricts online applications to between the hours of 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. HST, Monday through Friday, and between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. HST on weekends and holidays. “It’s better to try to apply between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.,” Evermore says.

Types Of Unemployment Eligibility Requirements

There are several types of unemployment eligibility requirements.

  • Earnings Requirements: “To receive unemployment compensation, workers must meet the unemployment eligibility requirements for wages earned or time worked during an established period of time also, workers must be determined to be unemployed through no fault of their own, so if you quit or were fired, you may not be eligible for unemployment compensation,” according to The Balance.
  • Eligibility Based on Type of Job Loss:“A person is eligible for unemployment if he or she is unemployed for reasons other than his or her own fault, such as a layoff,” according to The Balance. This means that if you quit or are fired, you are unlikely to be eligible .
  • Hours Worked Requirements: “Additionally, most jurisdictions require a person to meet his or her resident states weekly requirement for hours worked or compensation earned for a specified period of time before being eligible to collect unemployment,” according to The Balance. While each state is different, most people who lose steady, long-term employment will likely meet their state’s criteria so long as they’re not leaving their companies by any fault of their own.
  • File During Odd Hours Or On Your Assigned Day

Even with unemployment dropping in recent months, states are still inundated with claims, so even when youre filing online, dont be surprised if you encounter a problem or delay during at least one point in the process. You might try applying either early or late in the day or even in the middle of the night if youre awake in order to get your claim through the system.

Some states are also asking certain groups to apply on certain days, such as Hawaii, which is requesting that people whose last names start with A through G file on Mondays, H through O on Tuesdays and P through Z on Wednesdays. Youll need to check with your state to find out its specific rules.

That being said, if youve lost your job, make it a priority to file as quickly as you can, as waiting delays getting your claim approved. Unfortunately, there arent many tricks to getting through other than being persistent.

How To Determine Whether You’re Eligible For Unemployment Insurance

    Ca Edd Unemployment Application Online

Unemployment insurance is a program that’s jointly run by the state and federal government, so while the application procedure can vary by state, the overall process and eligibility requirements are more or less the same.

As the US Department of Labor outlines on its website, you will typically qualify for benefits if you:

    • “Are unemployed through no fault of your own. In most states, this means you have to have separated from your last job due to a lack of available work.”
    • “Meet work and wage requirements. You must meet your state’s requirements for wages earned or time worked during an established period of time referred to as a “base period.” “
    • “Meet any additional state requirements. Find details of your own state’s program.”

The Department of Labor has issued guidance to states to allow more flexibility with unemployment insurance during the coronavirus outbreak. That includes allowing states to pay benefits for workers who are quarantined and cannot go to work or workers who leave a job due to a risk of exposure or to care for a family member.

Some restaurants and hotels have put their workers on zero hour schedules and told them they’re not eligible to file for unemployment benefits because they’re not technically laid off. But if you had zero earnings in the prior week and your employer didn’t offer you any hours, you’re likely eligible, according to Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at The Century Foundation.

    When in doubt? Apply.

    Find Your States Requirements

Each state will have a different set of rules for those filing for unemployment. The U.S. Department of Labor main website can help you find your states unemployment website, as well as all the referential information and forms you may need to complete your application.

Once you find your state on the list, youll easily be able to research the best way to apply for unemployment: online, by phone or in person by going to an unemployment office. You likely find your states application form on the internet, making it easy to file a claim.

You should never use any random website to apply, nor should you rely on a third party to file for you. It’s illegal for anyone but you to apply for your own benefits and, in many cases, third parties that claim to want to help you are attempting to scam you for your personal information. Official government websites will end with .gov, so double-check the web address before entering your personal information like your social security number.

Just remember to file in the right state. If you were working in a neighboring state before you lost that job, or the loss of employment forced you to move elsewhere, you’ll want to file in the state where you were employed, not in the state where you live.

    Benefit Year End Date

A regular unemployment insurance benefit year ends 12 months after the claim started.

You must reapply for a new claim if you earned enough wages in the last 18 months and are still unemployed or working part time. We will notify you when your new claim is processed. This usually takes two to three weeks.

    • If youre unsure if you have enough wages as reported by an employer, log in to UI OnlineSM and select File New Claim. We will do one of the following:
      • Immediately tell you that you do not have enough wages to establish a new claim.
      • Provide instructions on how to submit a new application.

For more information, refer to the unemployment benefit calculator.

If you served in the military, worked for a federal government agency, or worked in a state outside of California within the last 18 months, you must reapply for a new claim by phone, mail, or fax.

You do not need to reapply if you did not earn enough wages in the last 18 months to establish a new claim, regardless of whether you are on a regular claim, a federal extension, or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance . Continue to certify for benefits, and we will notify you when your benefit weeks are processed.

To find your benefit year end date, log in to UI OnlineSMand view your Claim Summary. Your benefit year end date is 12 months after the start of your Benefit Year.

For more information, refer to your Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award for your claim ending date or review Benefit Year End.

Fill Out An Application Through Your State’s Unemployment Website

You should apply for unemployment insurance as soon as you’re no longer working. There’s usually a one-week unpaid waiting period before you can start receiving benefits, but many states, including New York, California, and Ohio, have waived it.

“Just apply. Don’t wait,” Heidi Shierholz, a senior economist and policy director at the Economic Policy Institute, told Business Insider. “There’s no reason to wait a week because you can start getting those benefits a soon as possible. It’s good for you, it’s good for the economy.”

Depending on the state, unemployment insurance claims can be filed in person, on the phone, or online. Most states encourage online applications. Particularly during this time of social distancing, online is probably your best bet.

You should file your claim with the state where you were working. If you now live in a different state than the one where you worked, of if you worked in more than one state, the state unemployment insurance agency where you now live can give you information about how to file claims with other states, according to the US Department of Labor.

“Start with your state’s unemployment insurance benefits site. You’re going to get the most recent and accurate information there and really to learn exactly what documents you need to start gathering,” Erik Josowitz, an analyst at insurance marketplace InsuranceQuotes, told Business Insider.

For families who are worried about how a lack of a UCE tax credit could impact their FAFSA application, Chany recommends they wait for additional guidance before filling out the FAFSA application as long as their student isn’t applying to or attending schools in states that provide financial aid on a first come, first serve basis.

There are 13 states that award aid this way: Alaska, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont and Washington.

“It only helps to file early if the school gives money on a first come, first serve basis,” he said. “Otherwise, there is no advantage to filling out the FAFSA application immediately after it opens on Oct. 1. It’s better to wait and make sure you have the tax guidance you need to fill out the form properly.”

    • Appeal Process

Unemployment adjudication is the legal process for settling the dispute between employee and employer. An unemployed individual applies with the state for weekly unemployment insurance. The states labor department begins the process by contacting the last employer to verify the reason for termination of employment. The last employer can question the claim and based on this, the claim may be denied. The claimant may appeal a denied claim. The unemployment adjudication hearing or fact finding interview gives the applicant an opportunity to present his case for a contested claim or denied claim. Once a valid claim has been established, it is then reviewed to determine if you, or a former employer, have provided any information that could come in way of unemployment payments. If an issue is raised, an adjudicator will review any information that you have already provided, and if additional information is needed, you will be contacted. An adjudicator may contact you by telephone, e-mail…
