How Much Money Will I Receive If I Decide To File For Unemployment Benefits

Coronavirus unemployment Q& A: How long does it take to process a claim?

Generally, your payment will be a percentage of your prior earnings, up to a cap set by state law. Although states differ in how they calculate benefits, a typical formula pays half of the employee’s former weekly wages, up to a maximum amount that varies widely from state to state. To continue receiving benefits, you will have to file a claim every week or two. The claim form will ask about any amounts you’ve earned during the claim period, your efforts to find work, and so on. Q& a: How Long Do You Have To Work To Get Unemployment

If you find yourself out of work through no fault of your own, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. However, even if you feel you’re eligible, there are requirements you must meet to officially start receiving unemployment, including having recently worked as an employee for a company. Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, there may be additional ways to qualify for unemployment pay.

In this article, we discuss how long you have to work to get unemployment based on period requirements, work requirements and your earnings.

Direct Deposit To Your Own Bank Account Or Prepaid Card

Similar to how you may have used direct deposit to receive your paycheck, you can have your money automatically sent to your checking or savings account or a prepaid card that you already own.

What you need to know

  • Benefits go directly to your own bank or credit union account or prepaid card
  • Access your benefits same as you already do with other money in that account
  • Benefits are sent to your account for free

What to watch out for

  • Look closely for this option when filling out unemployment forms
  • People without their own bank account or prepaid card must open one to take advantage of this option

With direct deposit, you receive your money quickly and safely, and you can manage your unemployment benefits just like any other funds in your account. It also eliminates the risk of paper checks getting lost or stolen, as well as the need to physically deposit or cash it at a bank or credit union.

If you prefer to use a prepaid card, direct deposit is generally an option, but youll want to check first with your card provider to find out if your card is eligible to receive direct deposit. If you dont already have a bank or credit union account or prepaid card, youd need to open a new account first, which many financial institutions are allowing you to do online.

How Long Does Unemployment Insurance Last

The typical initial limit for unemployment benefits is 26 weeks. The cash stipend is distributed weekly to the employee in an amount that approximated half of the employee’s regular wage. This is funded by state taxes on employers.

Individuals who are not able to find new employment within the 26-week period can become eligible for an extended benefits program. This is not available in all states, but where it is available, the extended benefits give unemployed workers an additional 13 to 20 weeks of unemployment benefits.

Unemployment Benefits Eligibility Decisions Faq

Q. Waiting for a decision on your claim for benefits?A. Most unemployment-insurance applicants receive benefit checks or a decision explaining why they are not eligible within three weeks of their initial application. A small percentage of claims requires additional fact-finding, or “adjudication,” to determine if the individual is eligible for benefits.

Q. How long will it take to make a decision?A. For those claims that have questions, or open issues as we call them, it can take more time than usual to work through the specific circumstances of each case and determine whether a claimant qualifies for benefits. Because of this, and also due to the unprecedented number of claims we are working with due to the COVID-19 crisis, timelines for when claims with issues will be resolved vary depending on the individual circumstances. You will be paid retroactively for all weeks for which you were eligible and filed a claim.

Q. What types of issues delay eligibility decisions?A. The issues vary, but many relate to whether the claimant quit or was fired or whether the claimant is immediately available for work. Our adjudicator communicates with the employers and the claimants before making a decision. Working through the specific facts of each case takes time.

How best to check on you your Georgia unemployment claim

The fact that you lost either your side business or a part time job does not make you unemployed if you are still working full time or are earning more than your weekly benefit amount . If you are not employed full time but are still receiving some wages from your employer, you may be eligible to receive benefits if the wages earned from your employer are less than your weekly benefit amount . Since you have no work as an independent contractor, then you have no earnings outside of your wages with your employer to reduce the benefits that you may be eligible for.
