Florida Unemployment Office Axes Call Centers Despite Thousands Who Still Need Help
Floridas unemployment office has gotten rid of all of the call centers it brought on in 2020 a decision that critics said is premature, as thousands of claims continue to pour in and applicants still struggle to get through the states antiquated CONNECT website.
The Department of Economic Opportunity recently cut ties with Titan Technologies, a company based in the Panhandle it had contracted with to provide up to 2,000 call reps to help the agency field calls from laid-off workers and process the backlog of claims caused by the pandemic. The original contract was for $80 million, but was later extended and increased to $162 million, according to state documents.
The state previously severed contracts with three other companies that were helping callers, including AECOM based in Los Angeles, United Data Technologies in Miramar and Faneuil in Hampton, Virginia. Those contracts totaled about $23 million and provided at least 1,000 call reps.
When the state shuttered AECOM and United Data Technologies call centers last summer, the agency said the companies were fired because of poor performance. But AECOM and UDT said the state told them it was because of lack of funding and had assured us this is in no way attributed to our performance on this contract.
The State of Florida and its citizens needed your help and you delivered, one email from the companys human resources team states. You made a substantial difference in the welfare of your fellow Floridians … “

About Florida Unemployment Benefits
Florida Unemployment benefits are part of an employer-paid program that provides temporary, partial income replacement to qualified individuals who are unemployed through no fault of their own.
Employers pay unemployment insurance taxes and reimbursements that support unemployment benefit payments.
A common misconception about the Unemployment Insurance program is that employees pay into the program while you were working. That is not true.
Rather, Employer taxes pay for unemployment benefits.
Employees do not pay unemployment taxes and employers cannot deduct unemployment taxes from employees paychecks.
In the state of Florida, the Unemployment benefits program is also called Reemployment Assistance.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity manages the Reemployment Assistance program.
You may file a claim for unemployment benefits in Florida if you meet eligibility requirements established under Florida law, in accordance with federal standards.

Floridas Unemployment Rate Has Improved Considerably Since The Depths Of The Covid
The extended economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the paltry benefits, some of the lowest in the nation, that Florida extends to its out of work residents has created a push to boost unemployment aid by lawmakers.
Most states offer their workers 26 weeks of unemployment compensation, whereas Florida offers just 12 weeks. In the pandemic and ensuing economic crisis that has lasted over a year, to fill the gap many unemployed Floridians have been able to claim federal pandemic unemployment benefits. These benefits were recently extended through the American Rescue Plan until 6 September, 2021.

Until then jobless workers in the Sunshine State will have to make do with the current unemployment aid available. You Will Receive Monetary Determination
After your application has been reviewed, your states unemployment agency will send you an Unemployment Insurance Monetary Determination letter.
This is a letter that tells you how much youll potentially receive in unemployment benefits.
The letter will include:
- The amount of wages reported by each employer
- Your weekly benefit amount
- Your total benefit amount
The information in the letter will show whether you have earned enough wages to establish an unemployment claim.
However, if you believe that wages on your Determination Letter are incorrect or missing information, contact your states unemployment agency for assistance.
You will be asked to provide proof of the correct wages in order to review your claim.
It is important to note that a monetary determination letter does not mean you will receive unemployment benefits.
Additional information may be needed from you and/or your employer to make sure you are eligible.
However, you must continue to file your weekly claim for payment while your claim is being investigated.
