What Manchin Appears To Forget
Everyday people slip through the cracks when economic indicators are the sole criteria used to gauge economic recovery. According to Andrew Stettner of the Century Foundation, if Congress does not step in , 7.5 million people are projected to lose all jobless aid. That’s 7.5 million real people who must scramble to find the money to live, regardless of their circumstances.
The good news is that unemployment is down. The less impressive news is that jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector account for 40% of recent job gains. While restaurant and hotel workers are vital to keeping businesses alive, they are among the lowest-paid workers in the country.

Aoc To Introduce Bill To Extend Pandemic Unemployment Insurance To 2022
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is calling for pandemic-era unemployment insurance programs to be extended until February 2022, she announced during a virtual townhall Tuesday.
The congresswoman said she will introduce a bill to extend federal unemployment programs established under the March 2020 CARES Act, which expired over Labor Day. If passed, the enhanced jobless aid would be retroactive to Sept. 6 and extended until Feb. 1, 2022.
Millions of Americans and their families lost their access to pandemic UI programs this month that provided aid to out-of-work freelancers, gig workers, caregivers and the long-term unemployed. All remaining workers collecting unemployment benefits also lost the $300 weekly booster that was created to supplement low state aid.
“I’ve been very disappointed on both sides of the aisle that we’ve just simply allowed pandemic unemployment assistance to completely lapse, when we are clearly not fully recovered from the consequences of the pandemic,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
While she added she’s not sure of the prospects of the legislation being passed, Ocasio-Cortez said she “simply could not allow this to happen without at least trying” to extend jobless aid.
Several studies have shown jobless benefits have had a minimal impact on hiring, and that concerns over the virus and ongoing child-care challenges remain top issues for workers evaluating their job prospects amid the health crisis.

Who Can Still Apply For Unemployment
While pandemic unemployment has ended, regular unemployment is still available.
Each state sets its own guidelines on how it issues unemployment insurance. In many cases, unemployment is available to salaried workers that lose their jobs through no fault of their own.
Applicants must meet work and wage requirements and there is a limit for how many weeks can be claimed.

Why Advocates Want Unemployment Benefits Extended
Congress has already twice extended pandemic unemployment benefits. Most recently, they passed the American Rescue Plan in March, which extended three key programs to assist workers who lost their jobs due to the pandemic:
- Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which provides payments to those who otherwise dont qualify for assistance like gig workers.
- Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation for workers whose regular benefits have expired.
- Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation that gives people on state unemployment an additional $300 per week.
The new legislation pushed the expiration date for these programs from March 14 to Sept. 6, with the expectation that the unemployment rate would be reaching pre-COVID-19 levels by then. But monthly unemployment data released last week show that there are still 12.3 million workers relying on one of the three federal pandemic-related programs.
Some politicians believe the enhanced benefits have been a crutch that has dissuaded people from looking for work. But Stettners research implies this is not the case.
Anyone who has ever looked for a job knows you don’t necessarily find one in a few weeks or a few months it takes time, Stettner says.

How To Collect Extended Unemployment Benefits
How you will collect extended benefits will vary based on your state. In some states, you wont need to do anything. You will automatically be paid for the additional weeks. In others, you may need to apply.
- If you are currently collecting unemployment benefits:Benefits are provided through the state unemployment offices, and information on eligibility will be posted online. If you are eligible, you will be advised on how to collect when your regular unemployment benefits end.
- If you have exhausted unemployment benefits:Long-term unemployed workers who have already exhausted state unemployment benefits may also be eligible for additional weeks of benefits. Check with your state unemployment website for eligibility criteria in your location.

Workers Really Dont Know What The Fall Will Bring
When President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan in the spring, the White House and lawmakers rather arbitrarily anticipated that it would be appropriate for unemployment benefits to end on September 6. They didnt anticipate some of the current challenges workers are facing, including the delta variant and an uncertain scenario for schools, that might render this a bad time to push the unemployed off a cliff.
There are myriad reasons people may not be able to return to work right now, or may be more hesitant to go back. Covid-19 cases and deaths are on the rise again. While the vaccines are available, many people are still nervous to get back out there.
Whether offices will reopen or businesses will close back down is uncertain. Some events are already being canceled, and offices are extending remote work, both of which have important implications for many jobs. Workers in the live events space expecting that work to come back might need to figure out if its time for them to change careers altogether instead of continuing to wait it out. Businesses in areas where there used to be a lot of office workers may not need to hire as many employees back soon, or ever.

Unemployment Benefits Could Be Extended Until 2022 As New Legislation Is Introduced

UNEMPLOYMENT benefits could be extended until 2022, thanks to new legislation expected to be introduced this week.
It comes as the federal Covid support initially ended over the Labor Day weekend, leaving millions of jobless Americans without help.
The proposal will come from New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , who said the benefits would be extended through February 1, 2022, if passed.
The bill would also be retroactive from September 6, the day unemployment benefits expired for millions of Americans.
“I will be reintroducing legislation to bring back the pandemic unemployment assistance,” the progressive congresswoman said.
However, AOC is not entirely sure the prospects of it.
Around 7.5million unemployed individuals watched their benefits expire earlier this month, according to estimates by the Century Foundation.
Those benefits included checks worth $300 per week.

Are Unemployment Benefits Ending
Yes, all pandemic unemployment benefits ended Monday on Labor Day, with no grace period to file beyond this date. Payments will be made through the week ending on Friday. At that point, many unemployed Americans will see their benefits cut by $300 a week.
Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the federal government has delivered more than $800 billion in unemployment benefits.
Unemployment checks, originally $600 and then lowered to $300, were enacted last year under the CARES Act by former President Donald Trump. For the first time, independent contractors and gig workers who had lost income due to the economic downturn received unemployment known as the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.
The government also continued to boost unemployment through the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation in states with reduced unemployment insurance, paying on average an additional $334.
In many cases, jobless Americans could collect both.
Through the American Rescue Plan passed in March, President Joe Biden extended all of these programs, including the maximum duration from 24 to 53 weeks. In states with high unemployment, people could receive up to 86 weeks of benefits.

Extended Federal Unemployment Benefits In Ct To End Soon
However, jobless Connecticut residents will soon no longer qualify for federal extended unemployment benefits.
Officials with the state Department of Labor said Connecticut will drop out of the federal extended benefits program effective Jan. 8, because the state’s three-month average unemployment rate has now fallen below 6.5%, the threshold for continued payments.
What Is A Back
Some states have launched programs using funds from the American Rescue Plan to incentivize people for taking a job.
Arizona set aside $300 million of federal funds to offer a one-time $2,000 bonus for people who rejoin the workforce with a full-time job. Those who go back to work part-time receive a $1,000 one-time stipend. Workers must also make less than $25 dollars an hour or the equivalent salary of $52,000 a year.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s office also announced the state would cover up to three months of child care for returning workers.
Montana’s Return-to-Work Bonus initiative will pay workers $1,200 who discontinue taking unemployment benefits after completing four weeks of work. According to the state’s website, workers must be willing to take a job in any industry.
And under Oklahoma’s program, workers would also receive $1,200 after six weeks at a new job.

Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kansas and Tennessee now allow employees who have been fired for failure to follow any company vaccine mandates to collect unemployment insurance. The decision in these states is highly controversial, as many GOP legislators fought to end extended unemployment benefits in their states in the midst of the pandemic, in hopes that it would help alleviate the labor shortage. Arkansas, Iowa, Tennessee and Florida all cut federal extended unemployment benefits in June.
Some critics of the new policy say it is a bid to politicize the pandemic. These governors, who are using the unemployment insurance system in a moment of political theater to make a statement about the vaccine mandate, are the same folks who turned off unemployment benefits early for millions of workers over the summer, Rebecca Dixon, the executive director of the National Employment Law Project, told the Washington Post.
