Do I Need To Meet With Anyone In Person

Some states require unemployed workers to meet with the unemployment department representatives to receive help with their job search and/or re-employment assistance.

If your state happens to be among these, there’s no need to panic. In many cases, it’s a routine meeting designed to assist with your job search not to put you or your job search under a microscope. Your meeting may be an individual meeting or a group meeting with other unemployed workers. It’s important to remember to bring records of your work search if you are required to apply for a certain number of jobs each week.

File Your Weekly Claims

*** IMPORTANT: to get any money, you must file weekly claims. ***

To start getting unemployment benefits, you need to file a weekly claim. This is different than the initial claim. You have to file both to get your money.

A weekly claim is how we figure out how much money to send you for that week. A week is Sunday through Saturday. You cant submit a weekly claim until the week is over.

To keep getting benefits, you need to file a weekly claim every week. File a weekly claim even if you worked that week. You need to report your hours and earnings for any work you did that week.

File your weekly claims even if you dont know if your application has been approved yet. It can take at least four weeks for us to process your application. If your application is approved, we will send you money for all the past weeks you were eligible for, as long as you filed your weekly claims.

  • Is There An Unemployment Waiting Period

Unemployment insurance waiting periods are 100% state-driven. Many states have what is known as a “waiting period,” otherwise referred to as a “waiting week” as part of their unemployment insurance laws.

For example, in New York State, you must serve an unpaid waiting period equivalent to one full week of unemployment benefits before you receive payments. Minnesota has a non-payable waiting week before benefits can be collected. In some locations, the waiting week benefits will be paid, but you will have to wait until the end of the claim period in order to collect those funds.

Based on the state-by-state differential, it’s best to check with your state unemployment office website as soon as you lose your job for information regarding the unemployment waiting period in your location.

Find Out Which State Taxes Apply And Get The Details

Figuring out the correct state and local taxes can get tricky. There are many different scenarios and state regulations.

Its best to contact the state withholding and unemployment insurance agencies, and any applicable local tax agencies where your employees live and work. The agencies can tell you which taxes apply to your specific situation, and get you registered for the applicable account numbers youll need for paying those taxes and filing the forms.

Depending on the state taxes that apply, youll need to have the following info to set up the new state in your payroll product:

    • Account number
    • How often youre required to pay the tax
    • Tax rates

    Roaming employees

Our payroll products arent designed to support roaming employees. A roaming employee means they work in more than one state and youre required to pay State Unemployment Insurance and/or local taxes in each state they work in. We dont recommend using any workarounds as this can cause issues with your state tax forms.

What Are The Requirements To Qualify For Unemployment Benefits In Kentucky

As in other states, eligibility for State of Kentucky unemployment insurance benefits is not based on need. That being said, there are many other eligibility requirements that must be met in order to receive benefits:

    • Be a Kentucky resident.
    • Meet income requirements for work completed in Kentucky.
    • Be able, available, and actively searching for work.
    • Be out of work at no fault of your own.

    Earnings eligibility requirements

Every state looks at a one-year base period of wages when determining unemployment insurance eligibility. In Kentucky, the base period is the first four out of the last five calendar quarters before your claim was made. To meet Kentucky unemployment requirements, you must meet the following requirements:

    • Have earned a minimum of $750 in at least one quarter of your base period
    • Have earned a minimum of $750 total outside the base period quarter when you earned the most
    • Have earned at least 1.5 times your wages in the highest paid quarter of your base period
    • Have wages in the last two base period quarters that equal a minimum of 8 times your weekly benefit amount

You must be able, available, and actively searching for work

Able to work refers to being physically and mentally capable of holding a job. If you are sick, injured, or disabled, you do not likely qualify for unemployment benefits in Kentucky. However, if you have a disability or condition but are able to work with reasonable accommodation, you are considered able to work.
