How Can I Check The Status Of My Unemployment Claim

Unemployment insurance pays benefits to workers who have lost their jobs and who satisfy eligibility requirements. Most states have automated the UI application process by providing websites where laid-off workers can apply for benefits and check the status of their claim. For example, Colorado residents can visit the My UI Claimant website at myui.coworkforce.com to check eligibility, file claims and check on the status of a claim.

Tip

Visit the website of your states employment department to find out how to check the status of your unemployment claim.

Checking Illinois Unemployment Claim Status

After youve submitted your initial unemployment claim in Illinois, youll usually get an unemployment finding letter in seven to 10 days that will provide the results of your application. Youll see past earnings listed along with how much you can expect weekly and how much of an unemployment balance youll have total. However, you have two ways to easily check the status while you wait for that letter.

You can visit the website for the Illinois Department of Employment Security and access your claim information daily except for between 8 p.m to 10 p.m. local time. If you applied for unemployment online, youll already have your user name and password. Otherwise, you can find a link to register for an online account if you had applied by phone. Once you log in, youll see your claim and check its status as well as check your payment history and certify for benefits in the future.

Alternatively, you can use the Tele-Serve system by calling 312-338-4337. This system operates between 3 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. local time and will require that you create a personal identification number before you can proceed. Youll use that along with your Social Security number to identify yourself in the system and can press 3 to hear about your unemployment claim status.

Pritzker Tax Relief Proposals Are Election Year Gimmicks’ Critics Say

The futility of her many attempts does not surprise Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation who has studied the troubled infrastructure of state unemployment benefits systems nationwide, most of which are now overwhelmed with record requests.

I imagine it as little gumball machine with hundreds of gumballs trying to get through the small little hole, Stettner said. You know, its almost impossible to do.

In his work, Stettner found a majority of states still using 1980s technology in their unemployment benefits systems. He said Illinois and Indiana have both made moves to modernize, unlike some states.

But thats not a silver bullet. You have to have good software, keep it updated and have really good leadership, he said.

Stettner said all states need to think out of the box, lift unnecessary obstacles and reach out to the tech sector for innovative solutions, a job too big for the old way of doing things.

I dont envy anyone the position of running an agency like IDES or any unemployment agency today, especially given these numbers, he said.

Back in Orland Park, one last creative attempt for Martinez may have done the trick.

Isaid, Im just going to try one more time. And even though I have been marriedfor 15 years, I tried my maiden name. And it went through!

Of course, claimants must first get through and get certified, in order to get paid.

Eligibility For Unemployment Benefits In Illinois

There are three eligibility requirements to collect unemployment in Illinois.

    • Your past earnings must meet certain minimum thresholds.
    • You must be unemployed through no fault of your own, as defined by Illinois law.
    • You must be able, available, and looking for work.

    Past Earnings

Virtually all states look at your recent work history and earnings during a one-year “base period” to determine your eligibility for unemployment. In Illinois, as in most states, the base period is the earliest four of the five complete calendar quarters before you filed your claim for benefits. For example, if you filed your claim in October of 2010, the base period would be from June 1, 2009 through May 31, 2010.

If you have been out and receiving temporary total disability payments under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation and Occupational Diseases Act, you may have low or even insufficient earnings during the regular base period to qualify for benefits. In this situation, the agency may allow you to extend the base period to capture up to one year of earnings before the regular base period began.

During the base period, you must have earned at least $1,600 total, and you must have earned at least $440 of that total outside of your highest paid quarter.

    Register With The Cra

An employer who wants to register a SUBP with the CRA must pay the contributions to a trustee. This allows the employer to claim a deduction for the contributions. The contributions made to the SUBP, and the investment earnings within the plan, are not taxable to the employee while the money remains in the trust. Once payments are made from the SUBP to the employee, they are included in the employees income in the year received. The benefit payments that an employee receives from a plan registered with the CRA are not subject to Canada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan contributions or EI premiums. If a plan is not registered under the Income Tax Act, any contributions made to the plan by the employer would not be considered to have been made to a SUBP under section 145 of the Income Tax Act.

    Your Illinois Unemployment Application

Whenever you apply for Illinois unemployment benefits, the state will look at the information you provided and reach out to your employer to determine if you meet all the qualifications. This includes having a valid reason for unemployment that typically excludes voluntarily quitting or getting fired due to misconduct. Further, Illinois requires that your work history shows you making at least $1,600 during the base period used and at least $440 in your highest quarter.

However, the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program can make it possible to receive benefits even if you dont meet Illinois work history requirements.
