As an Indiana employer, your small business must open a state unemployment account with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development . You must register during the first calendar quarter that your business is liable to pay UI premiums . You can register for an account with DWD either online or on paper. Once you’ve registered, DWD will issue you a SUTA account number.

Last week, a judge ordered Indiana to continue paying $300 weekly federal unemployment benefits, at least temporarily. The order by Marion Superior Court Judge John Hanley granted a preliminary injunction to a lawsuit filed June 14, which had argued that Indiana law required the state to procure all unemployment rights and benefits, including the supplemental federal unemployment bonus. The lawsuit was filed after Indianas Republican Governor Eric Holcomb proclaimed that the state would withdraw from the federal program and stop paying residents $300 on June 19.
Indiana became one of 26 states that pronounced they would stop paying the federal unemployment booster before the official expiration date of September 6. Despite scant evidence, Republicans have argued that the extra $300 is a disincentive to work and fueling critical labor shortages across the country. “There are help wanted signs posted all over Indiana, and while our economy took a hit last year, it is roaring like an Indy 500 race car engine now,” Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb had said when announcing the early end to benefits. “I am hearing from multiple sector employers that they want and need to hire more Hoosiers to grow.”

Though Indiana tried pulling the plug on boosted jobless benefits, it now has to continue paying them.
In March, the American Rescue Plan — the relief bill that put $1,400 stimulus checks into Americans’ bank accounts — boosted unemployment benefits by $300 a week through the beginning of September. But at this point, 26 states have made the decision to end boosted unemployment ahead of schedule.
The reason boils down to local labor shortages. Lawmakers feel strongly that boosted unemployment is keeping a lot of people out of the labor force. That’s because many people are earning more money on unemployment with that boost in place than they would at a job.
Indiana is one of the states that made the decision to end boosted unemployment early. But now, a judge has ruled that the state can’t pull that additional aid just yet.

William Hicks, 45, of Indiana was charged with unemployment fraud after which he pleaded guilty. The department discovered that Hicks was working and receiving wages while claiming unemployment insurance benefits through the agency records.
Hicks was sentenced to two years of probation in addition to repaying the benefits that were fraudulently claimed. The amount of falsely claimed benefits exceeded $38,000.
