Example Calculation Of Florida Unemployment Benefits

Heres an example of how the calculation works under typical circumstances.

Lets assume youre applying for Florida unemployment benefits in May 2020, and you earned the following amounts during the last few quarters.

  • Q1 2019: $3,500
  • Q4 2019: $5,750
  • Q1 2020: $2,500

The base period ignores the most recent quarter, so youll disregard the income from the first quarter of 2020. Of the remaining quarters, the third quarter of 2019 was your highest-earning one. If you divide these earnings by 26, your weekly benefit amount works out to $269.23.

If Your Appeal Is Appealed

Unfortunately, this is not always a one-and-done process. You might win your appeal only to receive notice that your employer is again appealing the decision so your successful unemployment appeal can be reversed. You usually have the right to do the same if your appeal is denied.

The subsequent hearing might take place before a different judge or panel. For example, a second appeal goes to the Board of Review in New Jersey. This state is particularly generous about the appeals process. You can reach out a third time to the Appellate Division of the New Jersey Superior Court if the second review doesnt go your way.

If you get hired for a new position that pays more than you are receiving in weekly unemployment compensation, then you are not eligible for unemployment benefits. However, if you find small jobs while you are unemployed and earn less than the weekly unemployment benefit amount, you still should be able to receive unemployment benefits. However, if you make more than $58 per week, the state of Florida will deduct a small portion from your unemployment check, which acts as a further incentive for you to find a job. Also, you must report your gross income and your earnings each time you request a benefit payment. And any payment for work you earn has to be declared the week you worked to make it, not the week you receive a paycheck.

How Will I Receive My Payments

You wont receive any money during the first week that youre eligible for Reemployment Assistance. This is known as the waiting week, which runs from Sunday to Saturday. So if you apply on a Wednesday, for example, youll have to wait a week and a half for benefits to start unless the state waives the waiting period.

Take note that these benefits arent paid out automatically. If your application is approved, youll need to log into CONNECT and manually request your benefits using the Request Benefit Payment option. This will take you through a brief survey to verify that youre able to meet ongoing requirements. After that, youll need to log in again every two weeks to complete the survey and request a benefits payment.

You have only two options for how to receive your money. The first option is to have it directly deposited into your bank account. But the state doesnt accept all banks, so if thats not an option or if youd rather opt for something else, your second option is to receive your payments on a prepaid Way2Go debit card. But be careful with this this option because there are fees for using the card, although the website doesnt specify what these are. Make sure you read the fine print if, for example, you want to use your debit card to make an ATM withdrawal.

Florida Unemployment Claims Tick Up As Federal Assistance Programs Set To End

TALLAHASSEE – Jobless claims in Florida inched up for the second consecutive week, as two federal unemployment-aid programs tied to the COVID-19 pandemic are coming to an end.

The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday reported an estimated 8,270 first-time unemployment claims were filed in Florida during the week that ended Aug. 28, up from a revised count of 7,977 for the week ending Aug. 21.

The agency had initially estimated 6,494 initial claims were filed in Florida during the week that ended Aug. 21.

The totals for both weeks, along with a four-week average of 6,896 claims, remain at pre-pandemic levels. They also come as two federal assistance programs — known as the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation programs — are slated to end Monday.

Another federal program, which provided $300 a week to unemployed people in addition to state benefits, was halted by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration in June. The administration pointed to a need to spur people back into the workforce. A Leon County circuit judge this week rejected a challenge to the decision to end that program, known as the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program.

But Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at The Century Foundation, a progressive New York-based think tank, cautioned that the expiration of federal benefits nationally will “suck out $5 billion in spending from the economy each week.”

End Of Federal Extended Unemployment Benefits

BREAKING: FL DEO just announced Florida will join other states in prematurely CUTTING OFF extended unemployment benefits starting June 27.Move comes as business owners say theyâre struggling to hire works.

Florida became the 23rd state in the nation to move to shut off extended federal unemployment benefits.

With passage of the American Rescue Plan in early 2021, Congress approved providing $300 weekly supplemental unemployment benefits through the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation Fund. This $300 weekly benefit is above any other state and or federal benefits a person receives, and was supposed to be offered in Florida until early September when other federal programs expire.

Business owners and lobbyists across the U.S. argue theyâre struggling to hire workers, so in response, Republican-led states are rolling out preemptive cutoffs to the added incentives. Some governors have touted offering incentives for those who return to the workforce, but DeSantis said in late May he’s not in favor of that idea.

The extended benefits ended June 26, 2021 in Florida.

âTransitioning away from this benefit will help meet the demands of small and large businesses who are ready to hire and expand their workforce,â Dane Eagle, Executive Director of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity said in a news release issued May 24.

The move came after the state announced private-sector employment increased by 18,800 jobs in April, with more than 460,000 jobs postings online.

Overpayment Notice On Id Theft Claims

If you receive a Statement of Overpaid Unemployment Benefits Account for an unemployment benefits claim that you did not file, you should report the ID theft claim on TWCs online Fraud Submission portal. See Unemployment Benefits ID Theft for more information.

Once TWC confirms that a claim was filed using a stolen ID, the individual named on the claim is not responsible for any overpayment and the employers tax rate or reimbursement is not affected. Once ID theft is confirmed, any future overpayment statements will be suspended. However, you may continue to receive billing statements while the investigation is ongoing.

You do not need to respond to these statements.

It is important to promptly repay an overpayment because:

  • The overpayment stays on your claim record until you repay it in full.
  • If you apply for benefits,TWC will apply each eligible payment toward reducing your overpayment until the overpayment is repaid.
  • The Texas State Comptroller can recover your overpayment by withholding certain payments to you. That means the state cannot pay you lottery winnings, unclaimed property, unemployment benefits, or state job-related expenses, except for wages, until you repay the overpayment in full.
  • Some state funding for college students cannot be released until you repay the overpayment in full.

What To Wait For After You File Your Unemployment Claim

Floridaâs primary unemployment website wonât accept new claims until Monday

About a week after applying, you will obtain a letter stating if you are eligible and, if so, how much you will collect weekly as your benefit. In case you do not qualify for benefits, the letter will clarify why and tell you what you must do if you wish to appeal the verdict.

Once you have qualified to collect benefits, you must claim your weekly benefits every 2 weeks. The initial letter you obtain will give you a date on which you must call or go online and answer a few questions about your continued eligibility. Failure to reclaim your benefits every two weeks will hold up the payment of benefits to you.

Moreover, in the state of Florida, the first week of unemployment is not considered eligible for unemployment benefits. As such, your first date to claim your weekly benefits will be 3weeks after you initially claimed unemployment benefits, and then the benefits paid out will only be for 2 weeks.
