Under the Continued Assistance for Unemployed Workers Act of 2020, beginning with the week ending January 2, 2021, someone who earned a combination of income from a traditional job and had earnings of at least $5,000 during the applicable period as an independent contractor might be eligible for a $100 supplemental payment in addition to their regular UI benefit, extended benefits and federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation . Yes. Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation is a temporary program that provides additional weeks of benefits for claimants who exhaust all 26 weeks of their original regular UI benefits. The American Rescue Plan Act extended PEUC through September 4, 2021. If you previously exhausted your PEUC benefits, the additional payments cannot be backdated for weeks prior to March 14, 2021.

How To Get Extended Unemployment Benefits
How you’ll collect extended benefits will vary based on your state. In some states, you wont need to do anything. You’ll automatically be paid for the additional weeks. You may have to apply in other states.
- If you’re currently collecting unemployment benefits: Benefits are provided through the state unemployment offices, and information on eligibility will be posted online. You’ll be advised on how to collect when your regular unemployment benefits end if you’re eligible.
- If you’ve exhausted unemployment benefits: Long-term unemployed workers who have already exhausted state unemployment benefits may also be eligible for additional weeks of benefits. Check with your state unemployment website for eligibility criteria in your location.
You’ll receive the same amount that you received for regular unemployment compensation if you’re eligible for extended unemployment benefits. The number of weeks you’ll receive depends on your state unemployment rate and it may vary.
Initial Unemployment Increases Jumped By 55000 Last Week The First Major Increase Seen In Months As Omicron Spreads And Disrupts Business Activity
The Department of Labor has reported that for the week ending on 15 January initial unemployment claims climbed by 55,000 to 280,000. This is not nearly as high as the numbers reached in the beginning of the pandemic, but is a significant increase compared to the low levels reached in late 2021. Late last year, the rate of first time claims for these benefits hit a historic low. This did not mean however, that the labor market had absorbed all workers who had been laid off during the pandemic.
Are pandemic related extensions for unemployment benefits available?
At this point there are no federal extensions to support those who have lost their jobs during the latest surge of the virus.
The White House has argued that congressional approval for more federal funding for unemployment is not needed because of funds sent to state through the American Rescue Plan. The administration has urged states to use the money allocated to support workers who are laid off or continue to struggle to find work because of child care responsibilities or because they are a part of a high risk group when it comes to covid-19.
Another option, rather than extending unemployment benefits, would be to use the funds to establish paid family leave programs so that workers are not laid off for covid-19 related reasons.

No, typically that employee would not be eligible for regular unemployment compensation or PUA. Eligibility for regular unemployment compensation varies by state but generally does not include those who voluntarily leave employment. Similarly, to receive PUA, an individual must be ineligible for regular unemployment compensation or extended benefits under state or federal law, or pandemic emergency unemployment compensation, and satisfy one of the eligibility criteria enumerated in the CARES Act, as explained in Unemployment Insurance Program Letter 16-20. There are multiple qualifying circumstances related to COVID-19 that can make an individual eligible for PUA, including if the individual quits his or her job as a direct result of COVID-19. Quitting to access unemployment benefits is not one of them. Individuals who quit their jobs to access higher benefits, and are untruthful in their UI application about their reason for quitting, will be considered to have committed fraud.

Policy Basics: How Many Weeks Of Unemployment Compensation Are Available
Workers in most states are eligible for up to 26 weeks of benefits from the regular state-funded unemployment compensation program, although ten states provide fewer weeks, and two provide more. Extended Benefits are not triggered on in any state. Additional weeks of pandemic federal benefits ended in all states on September 6, 2021.
The federal-state unemployment insurance system helps many people who have lost their jobs by temporarily replacing part of their wages. Under certain circumstances, unemployed workers who exhaust their regular state-funded unemployment benefits before they can find work can receive additional weeks of benefits.
Under the CARES Act responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, all states received access to federal funding to provide additional weeks of Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Assistance benefits to people who exhausted their regular state benefits, and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance to many others who lost their jobs through no fault of their own but who were not normally eligible for UI in their state. These and other pandemic-related emergency UI programs ended nationwide the first weekend of September 2021, but many states stopped providing these federal benefits before that.

When Could An Extension Be Confirmed
The Biden Administration has now confirmed that they wont push at a federal level or via executive order to extend enhanced unemployment programs past the September 6th expiration date.
They are instead encouraging states with high unemployment or hit hard by COVID-19 Delta to use existing ARPA stimulus funding to extend and expand traditional state unemployment benefits for as long as needed. You can see more on this in this video.
States will have to provide guidance on expanded benefits or move to state extended benefit programs prior to early September to ensure a continuation of benefits. So stay tuned as updates come out and I will update on state-by-state basis.

If An Employee Receives Unemployment Benefits As A Result Of Covid
The programs under the CARES Act and subsequent legislation are funded by the federal government and not Illinois. For regular unemployment compensation, employers generally contribute to the cost of benefits for their former employees. The contribution rate of an experience-rated employer is based, in part, on the amount of unemployment benefits paid to the employers former employees, so this rate may rise when an employer furloughs or lays off employees due to COVID-19. If legislation is passed making claims related to COVID-19 non-chargeable to the employer, then employers furloughing or laying off workers due solely to COVID-19 would not be charged for the benefit costs, and the charges would be pooled between all employers. This would likely result in increased unemployment tax rates in future years for all employers because the entire pool of employers would need to be tasked with replenishing the benefit trust fund.

Federal Benefits Ending September 4
Effective September 4, 2021, in accordance with federal law, several federal unemployment benefits offered through the American Rescue Plan Act will expire.Benefits will end for claimants who are currently receiving the following:

Federal Unemployment Benefit Extensions For Expired Pua Peuc And Extra $300 Programs News And Updates On Missing And Retroactive Back Payments
With the expiry of federal enhanced unemployment benefit programs like PUA, PEUC, $300 FPUC and $100 MEUC after September 6th 2021 in all states, there has been considerable chatter around what happens next and when missing or back payments will be made.
The cessation of pandemic unemployment benefits without another extension to the end of 2021, is obviously a big impact to millions of jobless or under-employed claimants that will result in them losing all benefits under the PUA, PEUC or supplementary $300 FPUC programs.
