Apply Even If You’re Not Sure You’re Eligible
The process to file for unemployment varies by state, but there are two key questions you’ll need to answer: Did you lose your job through no fault of your own? Are you able and available for work?
If you can answer yes to those questions, you’re more likely to get benefits. “Err on the side of applying if you’re not sure a lot of people are eligible that may not realize it,” Evermore says. The No. 1 reason why people don’t apply is because they don’t think they’re eligible, but with states expanding eligibility, anyone who’s recently lost their job should at least fill out an application.
You also don’t have to lose your job to receive unemployment. You can actually receive partial unemployment if your hours have been drastically reduced or if you’re unable to work because you’ve been put into mandatory quarantine during the coronavirus outbreak. However, if you are sick, you’re likely not eligible for unemployment benefits because you’re not able to work.
The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance will run through the end of 2020 and workers will be eligible for retroactive benefits dating back to Jan. 27 and can access benefits for up to 39 weeks.
Use Eforms To Provide Information
If you are receiving EI benefits, you can provide information about:
- an absence from Canada
- a course or training program that you are attending or will be attending within the next 28 days
- other parents for parental benefits

Certain eForms may not be displayed depending on your benefit type. They are not available for maternity and caregiving benefits.

What Are Unemployment Benefits
Unemployment benefits provide you with temporary income when you lose your job through no fault of your own. The money partly replaces your lost earnings and helps you pay expenses while looking for new work. The benefits, from taxes your former employer paid, are not based on financial need. While you receive benefits, your job is to get back to work as quickly as possible.
How Do I Apply
To receive unemployment insurance benefits, you need to file a claim with the unemployment insurance program in the state where you worked. Depending on the state, claims may be filed in person, by telephone, or online.
- You should contact your state’s unemployment insurance program as soon as possible after becoming unemployed.
- Generally, you should file your claim with the state where you worked. If you worked in a state other than the one where you now live or if you worked in multiple states, the state unemployment insurance agency where you now live can provide information about how to file your claim with other states.
- When you file a claim, you will be asked for certain information, such as addresses and dates of your former employment. To make sure your claim is not delayed, be sure to give complete and correct information.
- It generally takes two to three weeks after you file your claim to receive your first benefit check.

What You Need For Apply For Unemployment Benefits
To apply for Unemployment Insurance benefits, you need to provide personal information including your Social Security number, birth date, home address, email address , and phone number.
You also need information about your employment history from the last 15 months, including:
- Names of all employers, plus addresses and phone numbers
- Reasons for leaving those jobs
- Work start and end dates
- Recall date
You may need additional information in certain situations:
- If you are not a U.S. citizen your Alien Registration number
- If you have children their birth dates and Social Security numbers
- If youre in a union your union name and local number
- If you were in the military your DD-214 Member 4 form. If you dont have it, you can request your DD-214 online.
- If you worked for the federal government your SF8 form
To receive payments by direct deposit, youll also need your bank name, account number, and routing number. Otherwise, the Department of Unemployment Assistance will send you a debit card.
If youre a non-U.S. citizen applying for UI benefits, DUA must verify that you are legally authorized to work in the United States. Non-English speakers can apply for UI in their own languages on DUA’s foreign language application site.

Community Services Block Grant Program
The Community Services Block Grant Program is designed to help members of low-income households be self-sufficient. The funds are distributed by local governments and non-profit agencies called Community Action Agencies.
These funds are used in a variety of ways to combat poverty, including:

Am I Eligible For Unemployment Insurance

Following a federal disaster declaration due to the effects of Tropical Storm Fred, Disaster Unemployment Assistance benefits are now available in Buncombe, Haywood and Transylvania counties. Individuals in these three counties have until October 10, 2021 to apply for DUA.

Can Furloughed Workers Receive Unemployment Benefits
Yes. Furloughed workers those put on mandatory unpaid leave â are encouraged to apply for Florida unemployment benefits. If your hours were reduced or you were put on a zero-hour schedule, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits.
Even if your employer says you wonât qualify, you should apply anyways. Eligibility is based on your earnings in a prior week, not the number of hours you worked. Once you apply for benefits, the Reemployment Assistance team will review your information and determine your eligibility.

How It Started And How Its Going
The U.S. unemployment rate was the lowest it had been since 1969 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020. The tidal wave of layoffs and resulting unemployment claims was simply too much for state offices to handle, says Andrew Rozo, a New York attorney who volunteered throughout 2020 with the New York State Bar Associations COVID-19 Pro Bono Network to help people struggling to reach the Department of Labor.

Unemployment insurance benefits are subject to federal and state income tax. If you collected unemployment insurance benefits in 2020, you will need the I.R.S. 1099-G tax form to complete your 2020 federal and state tax returns. Please note that when you completed your initial claim application, you chose whether to have any taxes withheld from your weekly benefit amount. If you chose not to withhold any taxes, then you will be required to pay the appropriate taxes on the total benefits received when you pay your taxes.
Marylandâs Division of Unemployment Insurance has issued a 1099-G tax form to all claimants that received unemployment insurance benefits during the calendar year 2020 based on the delivery preference chosen in their BEACON portal.
All claimants will be able to immediately access their 1099-G tax form by visiting their BEACON portal and selecting Correspondences from âYour Options.â Select âSearchâ to display all Correspondences and select â1099â to view. Do I Need To Meet With Anyone In Person
Some states require unemployed workers to meet with the unemployment department representatives to receive help with their job search and/or re-employment assistance.
If your state happens to be among these, there’s no need to panic. In many cases, it’s a routine meeting designed to assist with your job search not to put you or your job search under a microscope. Your meeting may be an individual meeting or a group meeting with other unemployed workers. If You’re Denied Appeal
After you file your claim, your state agency will typically review the information you provide, talk to your past employer, and may even call to interview you about your situation. If the agency believes you don’t meet any of its requirements, it can deny your claim for benefits. But don’t give up, Evermore says.
“Most people don’t realize that if you’re denied benefits on the first try, you can always try to appeal,” Evermore says. That process can be a bit time-consuming, but it’s worth it. And with the COVID-19 situation continuing to evolve, your eligibility may change.

Update Your Personal Information
When you change your mailing address or direct deposit information using MSCA, it is updated right away.
Select Direct deposit to have your EI payments deposited into your bank account. You cannot update your direct deposit information in advance.
Select Mailing address and telephone number to change your address or phone number. You must let us know of any changes if you have received EI benefits in the past year. This prevents delays in receiving benefits. It also ensures you receive your T4E for your tax return.
You can provide your future address up to 180 days in advance. Select My future mailing address and telephone number information to enter your new information and effective date.
If you moved to a new province and your claim has been transferred, you must also update your province of residence by selecting Province of residence. This ensures that you always see your most recent EI claim information.
If your home address is different than your mailing address, call 1-800-206-7218 during business hours or visit a Service Canada Centre. It cant be updated online.
What To Say And What Not To Say
When completing your unemployment forms, one of the first questions you see will be something like: Explain in your own words why you left your last job. The form won’t leave much room for long-winded explanations. Take the clue and keep your responses simple and noncommittal.
Unless you were clearly dismissed from your job because of something you did wrong, avoid using the word “fired” in filling out any forms or answering any interview questions at the unemployment insurance office. There are many unspecified words thrown around concerning the end of employment, but fired is the one most often taken to mean that you did something wrong and were dismissed because of it.
If you lost your job because business was slow, note that you were laid off. “Laid off” is an equally vague term, but it is less likely to raise questions about the validity of your claim.
If you were discharged by your employer, take pains to note: “Discharged without any misconduct” or “Quit for good cause.” Leave out any qualifying details, such as: “My supervisor never liked me from the first day I walked in, so naturally I was the first to be laid off.”

File For Unemployment Benefits
If you recently lost your job through no fault of your own, are unable to work due to a natural disaster or quit for good cause related to the work or the employer, you may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits. How Much Money Will I Receive
Unemployment benefits vary from person to person and are based on your previous wages and the number of weeks you are allowed to receive benefits. - Wages paid in the highest quarter of your base period multiplied by 4.1%
- Round down to the nearest dollar
