Types Of Disability Policies

How to Sign Up for Direct Deposit for Unemployment Insurance Benefits

There are two types of disability policies.

  • Short-term policies may pay for up to two years. Most last for a few months to a year.

  • Long-term policies may pay benefits for a few years or until the disability ends.

Employers who offer coverage may provide short-term coverage, long-term coverage, or both.

If you plan to buy your own policy, shop around and ask:

  • How long do benefits last?

  • How much money will the policy pay?

Apply Even If You’re Not Sure You’re Eligible

The process to file for unemployment varies by state, but there are two key questions you’ll need to answer: Did you lose your job through no fault of your own? Are you able and available for work?

If you can answer yes to those questions, you’re more likely to get benefits. “Err on the side of applying if you’re not sure a lot of people are eligible that may not realize it,” Evermore says. The No. 1 reason why people don’t apply is because they don’t think they’re eligible, but with states expanding eligibility, anyone who’s recently lost their job should at least fill out an application.

You also don’t have to lose your job to receive unemployment. You can actually receive partial unemployment if your hours have been drastically reduced or if you’re unable to work because you’ve been put into mandatory quarantine during the coronavirus outbreak. However, if you are sick, you’re likely not eligible for unemployment benefits because you’re not able to work.

The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance will run through the end of 2020 and workers will be eligible for retroactive benefits dating back to Jan. 27 and can access benefits for up to 39 weeks.

Use Eforms To Provide Information

If you are receiving EI benefits, you can provide information about:

  • an absence from Canada
  • a course or training program that you are attending or will be attending within the next 28 days
  • other parents for parental benefits

You can save a draft of your eForm. It will be available to edit for 24 hours. You can only save 1 draft of each eForm at a time.

You can view and print eForms that have been submitted within the last 2 years.

Certain eForms may not be displayed depending on your benefit type. They are not available for maternity and caregiving benefits.

To provide information regarding your claim, call 1-800-206-7218 during business hours or visit a Service Canada Centre.

What Are Unemployment Benefits

Unemployment benefits provide you with temporary income when you lose your job through no fault of your own. The money partly replaces your lost earnings and helps you pay expenses while looking for new work. The benefits, from taxes your former employer paid, are not based on financial need. While you receive benefits, your job is to get back to work as quickly as possible.

How It Started And How Its Going

The U.S. unemployment rate was the lowest it had been since 1969 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020. The tidal wave of layoffs and resulting unemployment claims was simply too much for state offices to handle, says Andrew Rozo, a New York attorney who volunteered throughout 2020 with the New York State Bar Associations COVID-19 Pro Bono Network to help people struggling to reach the Department of Labor.

Getting through to the Department of Labor you had a better chance of winning the lottery at that time, Rozo says.

About a year later, Americas high unemployment rate isnt going anywhere. Jobless claims have fallen from last springs record highs, but new initial claims remain in the hundreds of thousands each week. The unemployment rate is still 6.3%, with 10.1 million Americans unemployed, according to the Feb. 5 jobs report from the Department of Labor. Thats nearly double the 3.6% jobless rate of late 2019, with 5.8 million unemployed people.

Filing For Weekly Benefits

Cyclical Unemployment

Once youve filed your initial claim for unemployment benefits, you can access your account each week and apply for benefits, check on the status of the claim to see when payment was made, and review how much unemployment compensation is left in your account. Mark your calendar with the day you need to file. Payment won’t be made unless you file for benefits each week for which you’re eligible.

While receiving unemployment, you must be actively willing to work and actively looking for work. The definitions of actively willing to work and actively looking for work also vary by state.

Information Required To Apply For Unemployment

If youve been laid off from your job, the chances are high that you will qualify to file for unemployment benefits.

In most states, unemployed workers can apply online, over the phone, or, in some cases, by mailing a form. Many states provide information for applicants in numerous languages, including Spanish.

Applying online is the quickest and easiest way to file for unemployment. Claims are generally processed much more quickly, so you stand to start receiving benefits sooner than applying by phone or mail.

Do I Need To Meet With Anyone In Person

Some states require unemployed workers to meet with the unemployment department representatives to receive help with their job search and/or re-employment assistance.

If your state happens to be among these, there’s no need to panic. In many cases, it’s a routine meeting designed to assist with your job search not to put you or your job search under a microscope. Your meeting may be an individual meeting or a group meeting with other unemployed workers. It’s important to remember to bring records of your work search if you are required to apply for a certain number of jobs each week.

If You’re Denied Appeal

How to Apply for Unemployment Benefits in Texas

After you file your claim, your state agency will typically review the information you provide, talk to your past employer, and may even call to interview you about your situation. Most states also require employees to have worked a certain amount of time and/or earned a minimum amount to be eligible for benefits.

If the agency believes you don’t meet any of its requirements, it can deny your claim for benefits. But don’t give up, Evermore says.

“Most people don’t realize that if you’re denied benefits on the first try, you can always try to appeal,” Evermore says. That process can be a bit time-consuming, but it’s worth it. And with the COVID-19 situation continuing to evolve, your eligibility may change.

“If you get rejected, appeal,” she says.

What To Say And What Not To Say

When completing your unemployment forms, one of the first questions you see will be something like: Explain in your own words why you left your last job. The form won’t leave much room for long-winded explanations. Take the clue and keep your responses simple and noncommittal.

Unless you were clearly dismissed from your job because of something you did wrong, avoid using the word “fired” in filling out any forms or answering any interview questions at the unemployment insurance office. There are many unspecified words thrown around concerning the end of employment, but fired is the one most often taken to mean that you did something wrong and were dismissed because of it.

If you lost your job because business was slow, note that you were laid off. “Laid off” is an equally vague term, but it is less likely to raise questions about the validity of your claim.

If you were discharged by your employer, take pains to note: “Discharged without any misconduct” or “Quit for good cause.” Leave out any qualifying details, such as: “My supervisor never liked me from the first day I walked in, so naturally I was the first to be laid off.”

  • Wages paid in the highest quarter of your base period multiplied by 4.1%
  • Round down to the nearest dollar

Your Michigan unemployment amount cannot be higher than $362. The minimum amount you will receive is $81 per week.

What You Can Do To Get The Payments Youre Owed

The second time around, Harris says, resolving the issues with her claim was less painful. She was able to speak with an unemployment office representative who processed and restored her claim, allocating back pay for the weeks she missed in October, November, and December.

Harris credits the lessons she learned last spring, as well as the resources she found throughout the process, in making her second experience with the labor department easier to navigate.

Like Harris and millions of other claimants have learned, persistence is key.

Although state phone lines and websites remain inundated, there are actions you can take to help get the ball rolling. Heres what experts and those who have already gone through the process recommend:
