Whats Georgias Real Unemployment Number

Dont be fooled by Georgias unemployment rate. While many are breathing a sigh of relief that barely one in ten Georgians are out of work, the reality is much worse.

Georgias unemployment rate dropped to 9.7% last monthaccording to official numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released today.

This number is adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, if that still makes sense given the current conditions. Otherwise, Georgias rate would be 9.5%, relatively close due to the time of the year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics regularly makes adjustments to smooth out the data from the impact of seasonal employment, such as temporary employment during the Christmas season, teenagers working as summer camp counselors, or landscaping jobs dependent on the growing season. The smoothing out of data is intended to help economists detect trends more easily.

The sense of relief comes from more dismal expectations that the unemployment rate itself could have been much worseespecially considering the unprecedented havoc on the economy from COVID-19and from the encouraging news that Georgia is among the 38 states where the rates are coming down.

Georgias unemployment rate is among the lowest of the states. The nations rate was 13.3% . Three statesNevada, Michigan, and Hawaiihad seasonally adjusted rates of 25.3%, 22.6%, and 21.2%, respectively.

Georgia Reports Highest Unemployment Rate On Record

What

May 27, 20206:23 a.m.

GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today an April preliminary unemployment rate of 11.9 percent. The number of unemployed increased from 342,601 to 581,820. Aprils numbers represent the highest one-month recorded increase and also the highest total unemployment on record. Georgias April 2020 number of unemployed is more than 80,000 higher than the height of the Great Recession of 2009-2010.

This is the highest unemployment rate on record, eclipsing the previous high of 10.6 percent that occurred in December 2010, said Commissioner Mark Butler. However, the cause of this high unemployment rate differs greatly from that of the previous record, and I have no doubt that we will recover just as quickly and get back to our record lows once again.

Jobs were down 492,100 over the month of April to 4,126,500, the lowest level since April 2014. The leisure and hospitality sector, which includes the food services and drinking places and accommodation sectors, accounted for 206,700 of the job loss, 42 percent of the total.

The Rome area lost 2,100 jobs from March to April.

The number is down by 1,800 when compared to April of last year.

Commissioner Butler said, The surge in initial claims in accommodation and food services, retail trade, health care, manufacturing, and administrative and support services accounted for two-thirds of all initial claims processed.

Accessing Georgias Unemployment System

From mid-March 2020 to now, 4.6 million Georgians have turned to unemployment insurance. Excluding those with multiple episodes of job loss who therefore filed more than once as well as those who filed multiple claims for the same lost job, nearly 60 percent of Georgias pre-pandemic labor force have turned to the unemployment safety net at some point during the last year. New weekly claims continue to reflect high levels of joblessness, with over 39,000 Georgians filing for regular unemployment benefits during the week ending March 27, 2021. This is more than seven times the amount of new jobless claims that were filed during the last pre-pandemic week of March 2020. Continued claimswhich signify people who continue to certify for pending payments after their initial claim, as well as those who certify to continue receiving payments provide even greater context into persistent unemployment trends in Georgia. Continued claims at the end of March 2021 were more than five times greater than continued claims in the last pre-pandemic week of March 2020.

In February 2021, unemployment claims for Black Georgians were 52 percent higher than those of all other filers, and 71 percent higher than those of white Georgians alone. February unemployment claims for Georgia women remained higher than Georgia men, even though there are nearly 100,000 fewer women in the workforce than men, and they filed 32 percent fewer unemployment claims than men before the pandemic began.

Georgia Job Trends: One Year Into The Covid Pandemic

During COVID-19, there have been significant differences in employment outcomes among high-, middle- and low-wage workers in Georgia. From January 2020 to February 2021, employment rates among high-wage workers grew by 4.8 percent. Employment among middle-wage workers declined by 1.7 percent. And employment among low-wage workers declined by 9.9 percent.

There have also been striking differences in employment outcomes across gender. From February 2020 to March 2021, employment for Georgia men has had a net growth of 5 percent, while having a net decline of 2 percent for Georgia women. These gaps between Georgia women and men in employment data speak to the trend of large exits of women from the workforceduring this pandemic.

Georgia bled more than 609,000 non-agriculture jobs from February 2020 to April 2020. As of February 2021, nearly 396,000 of those jobs have returned. The hospitality industry has experienced the greatest impact, initially losing over 223,000 jobs from February 2020 to April 2020. Following job growth during late spring and summer of 2020, resurging pandemic outbreaks in the fall and winter months reversed those industry trends into another period of job losses. Overall, as of February 2021, 61 percent of hospitality industry jobs have returned since initial losses in April 2020.

Georgia Unemployment Rate Falls To 56% Beats National Average

Atlanta, GA Today, Governor Brian P. Kemp issued a statement following the Georgia Department of Labor’s announcement that Georgia’s unemployment rate had fallen to 5.6% in the month of August, down from 7.6% in July. The national unemployment rate for August stood at 8.4%.

“In Georgia, we continue to make progress in the fight to protect lives and livelihoods,” said Governor Kemp. “New cases of COVID-19, current hospitalizations, and positivity rate all continue to decline, and I continue to urge all Georgians to follow Four Things for Fall to keep our state moving in the right direction. While we still face challenges ahead, Georgia has recovered over sixty-five percent of the jobs lost since March and cut our unemployment rate by more than half since April.

“In addition to a strengthening job market, revenues to the state have shown encouraging progress, Georgia has maintained its AAA bond rating, and new economic development projects in July and August have already equaled a third of total projects from the entire previous fiscal year – with $642 million in new investment and over 4,000 jobs announced by the Georgia Department of Economic Development in August alone.

“As the top state for business for a seventh consecutive year, we will continue to be laser-focused on bringing good-paying jobs to the Peach State, supporting families and small businesses, and reviving our state’s economy.”

How We Determined The Cities In Georgia With The Lowest Unemployment Rates

Before we could dive into what Georgias most employed cities were, we needed to know where to look in the first place. We settled upon any place with over 10,000 people and data available for our criteria.

This left us with 83 places in Georgia.

We then looked at the unemployment rates to determine the cream from the crop when it comes to low unemployment, and our data comes directly from the latest American Community Survey from the Census.

We thought the rate alone was representative of the current state of each citys job market with the potential for a person to get a job there, whether they were making an intrastate, interstate, or intercity job transfer.

We ranked all the cities for the criteria from one to 83 with one being the most employed city in Georgia. Where there was a tie, the winner went to the bigger city.

How To Get Your Suta Tax Rate

When you become an employer, you need to begin paying state unemployment tax. To do so, sign up for a SUTA tax account with your state.

You can register as an employer online using your states government website. You might also be able to register for an account by mailing a form to your state. Each state has a different process for obtaining an account. Check your states government website for more information.

To register for an account, you need to provide information about your business, such as your Employer Identification Number. When you register for an account, you will obtain an employer account number.

Once registered, your state tells you what your contribution rate is. And, your state will also tell you what your states wage base is.

Many states give newly registered employers a standard new employer rate. The new employer rate varies by state.

Some states split new employer rates up by construction and non-construction industries. For example, all new employers receive a SUTA rate of 1.25% in Nebraska, and all new construction employers receive a SUTA rate of 5.4% in 2021.

If you live in a state that doesnt use a standard new employer rate, you must wait for your state to assign you your starting rate.

Your state will eventually change your new employer rate. The amount of time depends on the state. You may receive an updated SUTA tax rate within one year or a few years. Most states send employers a new SUTA tax rate each year.

Georgia Unemployment Rate Falls To New All

ATLANTA – Georgias unemployment rate reached a new all-time low in March, falling to 3.1% as surveys show record numbers of people working in the state.

The jobless rate fell from the previous record low of 3.2% in February. It was 4.4% in March 2021. The nationwide jobless rate fell to 3.6% in March from 3.8% in February.

Close to 5.1 million people were working in March, while 165,000 Georgians were unemployed and actively seeking work.

Wages are rising in a tight labor market, with the state Labor Department reporting wages 9% higher in February than two years earlier. The states labor force was basically flat for more than a year while job opportunities rocketed back from the pandemic-induced plunge. Some signs of growth in early 2022 have emerged, suggesting that demand for workers and rising wages in Georgia may be luring new job-seekers.

Georgias jobless rate fell for 19 consecutive months after hitting an all-time high of 12.5% at the start of the pandemic in April 2020. Initial measurements last year had shown Georgias unemployment rate dipping as low as 2.6%, but revisions showed those numbers overstated the health of the job market.

The number of workers on employer payrolls the top labor market measure for many economists rose by 12,000 in Georgia in March, reaching 4.74 million. Thats 235,000 above payroll levels last year.

The state released the figures Thursday. They are adjusted to cancel out seasonal fluctuations.

Georgia Had 39% Overall Unemployment Rate In 2021

Georgia unemployment rate is down

Wednesday, April 13th, 2022

The U.S. job market has made great strides in its recovery since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2020, the unemployment rate skyrocketed to 14.7%, the highest it’s been since the Great Depression. But since spring of 2020, the unemployment rate has fallen steadily and currently stands below 4%, just slightly higher than the pre-pandemic rate of 3.5%. While all sectors of the economy were impacted by the pandemic and shutdown in early 2020, some parts of the economy have bounced back more quickly than others.

For example, while the unemployment rate could reach pre-pandemic levels by this summer, the labor force participation rate continues to lag behind. In February 2020, the labor force participation rate was 63.4%. After dropping sharply in the early stages of the pandemic and then partially recovering, it is still nearly a full percentage point below the pre-pandemic level.

There are several reasons for reduced labor force participation. Many older workers decided to retire early during the pandemic and are unlikely to return. Nearly 1 million Americans, many of which were part of the workforce, have died from COVID, and millions more are suffering from long COVID and unable to work. Additionally, school and daycare closures have forced many parents to leave their jobs due to caregiving responsibilities.
