Eligibility For New Jersey Unemployment Compensation Benefits: Part Time Employment
An issue sometimes arises when an individual has been employed in both a part time job and a full time job and files a claim for unemployment benefits when they leave or lose one of the jobs. In Goodman v. Board of Review, 245 N.J. Super. 551 , the Appellate Division, deciding an issue of first impression, reversed a Determination of the Board of Review holding Claimant ineligible for benefits that she was otherwise eligible to receive based upon the fact that the Claimant had left a post-termination part time position and reinstated the entitlement to benefits denied by the Division of Employment and Disability Insurance.
In doing so, the court clearly and unambiguously held that an individual otherwise eligible for benefits based upon full-time employment does not become ineligible for benefits because a worker later voluntarily leaves a part-time job. The court held that the Act permits a Claimant to work part-time and still collect partial benefits and a Claimant acquiring a part-time job does not destroy her status automatically as unemployed and does not defeat her eligibility for benefits.
In that case, the Claimant, Lorraine Goodman, was a shirt presser at a dry cleaner in Camden County from June 1988 through March 1989. She was fired from her job on March 31, 1989 after she failed to report to work because of a plumbing problem at her home and subsequently filed for, and began receiving, unemployment compensation benefits on April 9, 1989.

The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Developmentdoes not charge a fee to file an unemployment claim. Anyone who visits a website that charges a fee for processing an unemployment claim should immediately exit that site before providing any confidential information.
Before unemployment benefits can be paid to you, you must file a claim. You are not permitted to file a claim until you are unemployed. You may file your new unemployment claim, or reopen an existing claim, via the Internet if you meet all the following requirements:
- Worked only in New Jersey in the last 18 months, or
- Worked in New Jersey and any other state in the last 18 months, or
- Worked for the federal government and in New Jersey in the last 18 months, or
- Served in the military in the last 18 months and are physically present in New Jersey.

What Happens After I File An Initial Claim
After you file an initial unemployment claim you will be mailed a Form BC9 which explains how to certify for benefits as well as any appointments you need to attend. Appointments are mandatory and missing one could impact your ability to receive benefits.
Unemployment benefits are paid for a 7-day week that begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday. Amount And Duration Of Unemployment Benefits In New Jersey
If you are eligible to receive unemployment, your weekly benefit rate will be 60% of your average weekly earnings during the base period, up to a maximum of $713. This number is then multiplied by the number of weeks that you worked during the base period, up to a maximum of 26 weeks. For example, someone with a weekly benefit rate of $300 who worked for 26 weeks will be entitled to a total of $7,800 .

New Jersey Direct Deposit
If you choose the direct deposit option, your weekly compensation amount will automatically be deposited into your bank account each week. Before signing up for this option, check with your bank or credit union to confirm that it will accept direct deposit.
