Why Every Unemployed American Should Be Searching For A Job Right Now

Most states have now reinstated their work search requirements. Even before the requirements go into effect, however, there could be benefits to beginning your search early.

Job seekers who are active, engaged, and responsive now will have a distinct advantage over those who wait and rejoin the labor market when it is more competitive. Thatâs because job search intensity has been fairly low since COVID-19 outbreaks began in the U.S.

The pandemic made some forms of work more dangerous, public transit risks and restrictions made getting to work more difficult, and school closures made business as usual untenable for many working parents. Expanded unemployment benefits also eased the pressures on unemployed workers to find new jobs immediately.

Furthermore, the vast majority of people who lost their jobs were on temporary layoff and didnât see a need to find something new because they expected to go back to their old jobs.

Over a year into the crisis, however, many temporary layoffs have turned permanent. And it is becoming clear that other temporary layoffs will last longer than initially expected. With many layoffs likely to outlast unemployment benefits, workers will need to find new opportunitiesâeven if only in the interim. And while the current labor market environment is tough for job seekers, we expect it will only grow more competitive in the coming months.

Unemployment Work Search Requirements

While the rules and requirements vary by state, many states expect unemployed workers to register, keep a running log of their job search and report on it periodically.

This can vary from weekly submissions to monthly accounts.

In Washington state, for example, unemployed workers are required to keep a job search log for each week they claim unemployment benefits. There must be a combined total of three employer contacts or approved job search activities each week. The log must contain company information, how the contact was made , a contact name or confirmation of application, and the type of contact.

New York state, as another example, requires unemployed workers to apply to or contact several prospective employers each week. You must also keep a record of your work search that includes the employer name, address, and phone number, date of contact, a method of contact, position applied for, whether an application was accepted, and the result of the contact.

Work Search Required For All Claimants

To receive unemployment benefits, you are required to be actively seeking work. Under state law, all claimants are required to make three work search contacts each week and keep a record of their work search activities.

To receive benefits:

  • You must make contact with at least three different employers each week and keep a record of your work search, as is required by state law. One of the three weekly job contacts can be satisfied by attending an approved reemployment activity offered by a NCWorks Career Center or a partnering agency.
  • You are required to register with a jobseeker account on NCWorks.gov, North Carolinas online portal for employment and training services. Jobseekers can use NCWorks.gov to search and apply for jobs, access labor market information and find opportunities for workforce training.

Another Key Component Of An Effective Job Search Strategy Is To Keep Track Of Your Efforts

It is likely that your job search could involve hundreds of contacts and potential opportunities. You will need to organize this information to ensure you are making progress.

To do this, many job experts recommend using a “contact tracker,” which creates an organized list of companies youve contacted, dates, your action to date and the status of the lead.

Most unemployment insurance programs have their own form of contact tracker. To ensure you are in compliance with the requirements of the program, it is certainly recommended that you use the form provided. However, if no template is available, if you feel like you need to track more information than what is required on the provided UI template, or if alternate tracking methods are acceptable, consider designing your own tracking tool.

Creating a spreadsheet is one good method for tracking your research. Here is the key information to include:

If you dont want to use Excel, you can create a simple table in Microsoft Word or a similar word processor. Just insert a table and choose the number of columns based on how many categories you want to keep track of and the number of rows, relative to how many positions you’re applying for.

A system for organizing your search activities will not only advance your job search but will also help you quickly and easily provide the required information to your states Unemployment Insurance Agency to ensure continuation of benefits during your period of unemployment.

Register With Temp Agencies And Private Unemployment Agencies

Register for work with temporary employment agencies or private unemployment agencies. The act of registering counts as one job search. Every day you contact one of these agencies to learn if they have any suitable leads, it counts as one job search. If you contact one such agency asking if they have found any job matches for you every single workday Monday through Friday, you will have made five qualifying job searches. If you contact two different temporary or private employment agencies every single day, Monday through Friday, to learn if they have any leads for you, you have made 10 job searches.

Be sure to keep good records. Include what unemployment or temp agency you contacted, the date and time of your call, the name of the person you spoke to, what the conversation included, and specific information about any job leads you may have received.

Document Work Search Activities

You must document at least your minimum number of required activities every week. However, we recommend that you document all your work search efforts every week that you are receiving benefits. For unemployment purposes, a week begins on Sunday and ends on Saturday.

We may request your work search log for any week or number of weeks at any time during your benefit year. Keep all your work search logs for your entire benefit year, or for as long as you are receiving unemployment benefits, whichever is longer. If you are selected to submit your log, we send a notice to you.

Send a copy to TWC only if we request it, using the address or fax number we give you. You can also upload your work search log using our secure online UI Submission Portal. Once received, we will verify your activities.

All work search information you provide to TWC must be true and accurate. Intentionally giving false statements about work search activities constitutes fraud and can result in loss of benefits, overpayments on your claim, and criminal prosecution. Keep Track Of Your Interviews

There are so many applicants for most job listings nowadays that the human resources departments of many businesses choose to narrow down the most favorable applicants through a series of several interviews, often starting with a phone interview. Every time you have an interview, whether it is a phone interview, group interview, or private interview, it counts as one job search. Even if you interview with a particular company five or more times, each interview counts as one job search.

Keep good records. Take a notebook to your interviews and also keep a notebook near the phone where you can jot down important information like the names of the people who are interviewing you and their titles. Always record the date, time, and place of interviews and whether they were over the phone or in person. Sometimes, a company representative will conduct a short phone interview and then schedule you for an in-person interview soon afterward. That call counts as one job search, even though it was a combination of an interview and the scheduling of a future in-person interview. The in-person interview also counts as a job-search activity.

Apply For And Accept Suitable Full

To continue to be eligible for unemployment benefits, you must apply for and be able to accept a suitable full-time job. TWC determines if a job is suitable based on:

  • Your experience, qualifications, and training
  • The working conditions and pay for similar work in your area
  • Any risks to your health, safety, or morals
  • The distance to work from your home and local commuting patterns
  • How long you have been unemployed

If you do any of the following, TWC may disqualify you for benefits:

  • Refuse a TWC or Workforce Solutions referral for a suitable job.
  • Refuse to apply for a suitable job.
  • Refuse to accept a suitable job.

You have the right to appeal any denial. For additional appeal information, visit the Introduction to the Unemployment Benefits Appeal Process page.

During your first eight weeks of unemployment, you must be willing to accept a suitable job that pays at least 90 percent of your normal wage. After you have been unemployed for eight weeks, you must be willing to accept a suitable job that pays at least 75 percent of your normal wage.

Reminder: When you apply for a job, you should not ask for a wage that is higher than what other people earn for that type of job in your area. Research local wages for that type of job and ask for a similar wage amount. To explore career opportunities and compare wages by occupation and local area, use CareerOneStop’s Salary Comparison Tool.
