How To File Taxes After Receiving Unemployment Benefits

How to apply for unemployment benefits online in Ohio

How can you figure out how much you owe after receiving unemployment benefits? The solution is to prepare your taxes for filing as early as possible so that you can estimate what your tax bill will be.

If you received unemployment compensation, you should receive Form 1099-G from your state, showing the amount you were paid and any federal income tax you chose to have withheld.

First, if youre filing by using tax software or using a tax preparation service, its easy. The software package will ask you if you received unemployment benefits this year, and if you say yes, it will ask you for numbers directly from your 1099-G form. Your tax preparer will ask you for a copy of your 1099-G. In either case, this is easily handled.

  • Youll fill out Form 1040 as usual, following the provided instructions.
  • You will also have to fill out Schedule 1, which provides details on additional income like your unemployment income.
  • You simply enter your unemployment compensation on line 7 of Schedule 1, and you find that number on Box 1 of your 1099-G form that you received in the mail.
  • Finish filling out Schedule 1.
  • Then, when you finish filling out your 1040, you take the number on line 22 of Schedule 1 and put that number on line 10a of your 1040. Then, just finish filling out your 1040 as normal.
  • What if you had tax withheld from your unemployment check?

  • The amount of tax that has been withheld for you appears on box 4 on your 1099-G form.
  • How To File For Unemployment Benefits Online

Filing for unemployment varies by state, but you should be able to file online. In New York, for example, filing for unemployment benefits is relatively simple. Unemployed workers can visit the Unemployment Benefits website to submit a new unemployment claim, claim weekly benefits, or check on the status of an existing unemployment compensation claim. Filing by phone is also an option.

In California, workers can also file an unemployment insurance claim by completing an online form. The site also features a form that can be printed out, completed, and mailed or faxed, as well as a toll-free number you can call to file for unemployment.

Most states have similar options, and each has a website with the details on how to apply for unemployment benefits.

How to find your state unemployment office:

    • These sites can be found by searching for “your state name unemployment” via your favorite search engine.
    • Claimants will be asked to create a username and/or password in order to log in to their account to file for unemployment benefits.
    • Carefully follow the instructions for filing in your state to avoid claim delays. You’ll receive a confirmation of your claim once your application is processed.

You can also visit CareerOneStop to access a directory of state unemployment websites.

Set Up A Personal Identification Number

When you fill out your application, you need to set up a PIN that you will use to log into the CONNECT system and claim your benefits. A PIN is not provided for you, so you must create one yourself.

Your PIN must be four digits long, and it cannot be:

    • A repeating number
    • Four sequential numbers
    • The last four digits of your Social Security number

Make sure your PIN is easy for you to remember but not easy to guess.

    Filing For Weekly Benefits

Once youve filed your initial claim for unemployment benefits, you can access your account each week and apply for benefits, check on the status of the claim to see when payment was made, and review how much unemployment compensation is left in your account. Mark your calendar with the day you need to file. Payment won’t be made unless you file for benefits each week for which you’re eligible.

While receiving unemployment, you must be actively willing to work and actively looking for work. The definitions of actively willing to work and actively looking for work also vary by state.

The Difference Between The Targeted Grant And The Advance Given Out Earlier In 2020

In some ways you could say the targeted advances are an effort to make whole the previous advances under the CARES Act earlier in 2020.

The intent of the act was to have all businesses receive a $10,000 advance that did not have to be paid back. The SBA later added the rules that defined that it would be $1,000 per employee up to ten employees.

Independent contractors and self employed individuals were eligible for the grant. However, those of us who dont have employees could only receive a $1,000 advance. And thats all we received, if we did apply.

The purpose of the targeted grant this time around is to complete that original intent for businesses who truly were impacted by the pandemic. Thus, if your business received less than the $10,000 the first time around AND you can demonstrate the need as defined by the new criteria, you may qualify for an additional advance or grant.

The total of the original advance and the new grant are not to exceed $10,000. Language in the latest act specifically states that funds are not to be based on the number of employees.

As I write this the only thing that is not completely clear is whether there are other limits on the funding. In particular, some loans that were approved beyond the advance were less than $10,000. I havent seen language that addresses whether the grant would be limited to whatever the approved loan amount would be.

    Community Services Block Grant Program

The Community Services Block Grant Program is designed to help members of low-income households be self-sufficient. The funds are distributed by local governments and non-profit agencies called Community Action Agencies.

These funds are used in a variety of ways to combat poverty, including:

    • Providing emergency health, food, housing, day care, and transportation assistance
    • Housing counseling
    • Nutrition programs and federal surplus food distribution
    • Community gardening projects

Have Your Information Ready To File

Even if you haven’t been laid off or had a dramatic reduction in your hours, now is the time to make sure you have copies of your most recent pay stubs, Evermore says. Make sure those are easily accessible because if the employer shuts down, it may be more difficult to get copies.

When filling out your application for unemployment benefits in the state where you worked, the employment agency will need to verify your income. If the employer is no longer in business, you’re going to need your own records, Evermore says.

It’s also important to document any communications from your manager or employer about your work situation. That can mean anything from emails from your boss about reducing your hours to taking photos of “closed” notices hung in store windows.

Many states have a “waiting period,” usually about a week, that you have to undergo before you can receive your unemployment benefits. However, states like Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin are waiving mandatory waiting periods so workers can get benefits faster. With that in mind, it’s best to file as soon as you have news that your job status has changed.

In addition to documentation verifying your income and work status, you’ll also typically need to have the following details on hand:

    • Social Security number
    • Pension or severance package information

Dole Certification With The Attached Notice Of Termination Or Affidavit Of Termination Of Employment

All qualified employees who want to avail of the SSS unemployment insurance/benefits are required to secure a DOLE certification establishing the nature and date of the involuntary separation.

To apply for the DOLE certification, you need the following:

    • At least one valid ID . However, most DOLE offices require an original copy and photocopy of 2 valid IDs so make sure you bring an additional ID on the day of your application and

The second one is preferred in case your relationship with the employer didnt end in good terms and theres no way for you to obtain the Notice of Termination of Employment. • Certification Form .

Once you already have the above requirements, proceed to the following office to file your application for DOLE certification:

    • For local employees and kasambahays: DOLE Field or Provincial Office where the company of the employer is located or where the employee resides.
    • For OFWs: Philippine Overseas Labor Office where the employer operates or the DOLE Field/Provincial Office where the OFW resides.

As long as the documentary requirements youve submitted are complete, expect the DOLE Office or POLO to issue you the DOLE certification within one day after receiving and verifying your application.

What To Say And What Not To Say

When completing your unemployment forms, one of the first questions you see will be something like: Explain in your own words why you left your last job. The form won’t leave much room for long-winded explanations. Take the clue and keep your responses simple and noncommittal.

Unless you were clearly dismissed from your job because of something you did wrong, avoid using the word “fired” in filling out any forms or answering any interview questions at the unemployment insurance office. There are many unspecified words thrown around concerning the end of employment, but fired is the one most often taken to mean that you did something wrong and were dismissed because of it.

If you lost your job because business was slow, note that you were laid off. “Laid off” is an equally vague term, but it is less likely to raise questions about the validity of your claim.

If you were discharged by your employer, take pains to note: “Discharged without any misconduct” or “Quit for good cause.” Leave out any qualifying details, such as: “My supervisor never liked me from the first day I walked in, so naturally I was the first to be laid off.”
