How Idme Works
ID.me is a third-party anti-fraud vendor used by more than 20 other states and the federal government, Delli Santi said.
Residents who file for unemployment receive an email with a link directing them to a site hosted by ID.me where they are asked to verify their identity by uploading a government-issued photo identification and entering personal information such as their Social Security number and home address.
The company verifies the claimant’s identity through a video chat, usually Zoom, scheduled via email, and that information is then sent back to the New Jersey Department of Labor. After that, ID.me sends claimants an email when their verification is complete, letting them know they will hear back from the state.
Some residents say they were unaware that they had to verify their identity at all, and were eventually told when they contacted the department after weeks of no pay.
Someone told me I had to do ID.me, and they walked me through how to do that, but they didnt tell me how to link it to my claim, Stern said. I filled that out in October, and someone called in November to tell me how to link it.
Once the ID.me profile and the claim were linked, she said, the department told her she wouldn’t be paid for eight weeks.
Stern followed up again in January and was told it would take another eight weeks for her to see payment.
