Your State Is Switching Payment Providers
In Maryland, the Division of Unemployment Insurance switched from using Bank of America to Wells Fargo. Anyone who was getting their benefits deposited to a Bank of America debit card had to switch to being paid via direct deposit or check. Anyone who didnt actively choose a new payment method could experience a benefit payment delay.
Be Patient And Contact Your State Representatives
Unfortunately, however, waiting for your UI benefits is majorly just a waiting game.
But youre not entirely defenseless while you wait for your payments. Evermore recommends reaching out to your state representatives and lawmakers, letting them know about the issues youve faced. That way you bring the problems to their attention and they feel more pressure to make changes.
The biggest reason that the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation hasnt been extended is because people in Washington think, Problem solved. The unemployment rate dropped. The stock market is doing OK. Were fine, Evermore says. They have to hear from people who are struggling.

What Are The Benefits Of Choosing Unemployment Direct Deposit
In past years, state departments issued a paper unemployment check to UC enrollees as a way to provide them with program benefits. Recently, however, states switched to distributing benefits as electronic deposits into claimants accounts each week. This change in distribution method gives enrollees various new benefits, including:
- Immediate access to funds Candidates who wonder, How long does direct deposit take? must know that this process is faster than before. Due to this electronic transfer system, enrollees today can access their funds the same day they become available.
- Convenient for enrollees Claimants no longer need to wait and receive their checks in the mail or go to their UI offices and retrieve the checks. This saves enrollees time and energy, which is especially valuable when they are searching for reemployment opportunities.
- Safe transfer of funds Before unemployment direct deposit, petitioners were responsible for obtaining their checks, taking them to the bank and cashing them. If these items were lost or stolen, it was very difficult for claimants to receive reimbursements. However, it becomes less probable that claimants will encounter these issues once they enroll in direct deposit.

How Long Does It Take To Receive My Unemployment Benefits By Direct Deposit
Direct deposit eliminates the need for a paper check, check-cashing fees and the possibility of a lost or stolen check. Also, you will receive benefits quicker than through the mail. To sign up for direct deposit, you must have an open unemployment claim, have a checking or savings account and supply your state’s unemployment agency with the required information.
Your Application Might Be Getting Vetted For Fraud
State unemployment offices have been hit massively with fraud. The FBI in July announced that they had seen a spike in fraudulent UI claims relating to the pandemic, which involved fake filers using stolen personally identifiable information. Other fraudulent applicants have used the names and personal information of people who have not lost their jobs, further overwhelming the system and costing states money.
To stop the problem, some states have started requiring more forms of ID. Others, such as California, have decided to pause making payments and accepting new applications for two weeks, so they can get control of the problem and work through their backlog.
All of these peoples benefits are frozen while theyre flagged, and the state has got to verify their identity, Evermore says. Thats not always easy to do.

Your States Unemployment System Is Antiquated
According to reporting by The Washington Post, the District of Columbias unemployment website was based on 1950s programming language. It was also built in the early 2000s, before smartphones. That meant that anyone without access to a desktop or laptop computer has to make a claim by phone. Whats more, a single pandemic-related change to unemployment benefits took computer programmers more than two weeks to implement.
Your State Might Have Run Out Of Funds For The New Boost Or Hasnt Paid Them Out At All
Trumps executive boost to UI benefits isnt lasting as long as he thought it would. When the president first took action, he insisted that those extra payments would be made until December 6, or until FEMAs pot of money ran out but thats already begun.
Most states have only been able to make about six weeks of payments on that boosted amount, Evermore says. Seven states have already depleted those extra benefits, according to a Lost Wages Assistance program tracker, which includes Arizona, Montana, North Carolina and Texas. Meanwhile, 15 states additional payments are still pending. South Dakota never took advantage of the program at all.
If you were approved for extra benefits but still havent received those payments, you should eventually receive them backdated, Evermore says. But if youve still been waiting on your application to be approved by the time the pot of money runs out, youll most likely not be able to receive those extra payments.
If the money runs out, the money is out, Evermore says.

Direct Deposit Setup Time
The time it takes to set up direct deposit for your unemployment benefits varies by state, but there could be delays due to the current coronavirus pandemic. Generally, it takes five to seven days for processing. Some states, such as Washington, can take up to seven days and filers are directed to wait at least seven days before attempting to track the payment. Whereas Ohio, on the other hand, takes only three to four days to set up a direct deposit account.
Your state unemployment office verifies that the ABA routing number is valid and the bank account information is accurate. To speed up the process, you can set up direct deposit when you initially apply for unemployment compensation.

People are waiting for what seems like an eternity for their first unemployment check to arrive in their bank account. Some are checking their account multiple times a day to get that relief of financial security.
After researching and digging for straight answers from government websites and other news sources most unemployment insurance benefits should be directly deposited into your bank account during the evening posting routine.
This is due to the lower amount of major transactions that typically occur in most banks.

You Accidentally Answered A Question Incorrectly
According to reporting by ABC7 News in San Francisco, a confusingly worded question that many people answered incorrectly caused their California unemployment payments to get stuck on pending for weeks. The question asked people who were recertifying their qualification for benefits if there was any reason besides sickness or injury that they couldnt work.
Many people answered yes, because the pandemic was the reason they were out of work, but the system was set up assuming that people would answer no even if the pandemic was causing their unemployment. Their applications then got categorized as requiring an interview with an unemployment department representative, creating delays that can take weeks to resolve.
Submit Any New Forms Of Identification Or Documentation
In instances when youre worried about being vetted for fraud or missing documents, its worthwhile to log into your unemployment application and submit any new documentation. You should also consider uploading a new picture of your ID or another form of identification that your state agency can use to verify your claims.

What To Know About The Unemployment Tax Break
The first thing to know is that refunds would only go to taxpayers who received jobless benefits last year and paid taxes on that money before the provision in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The tax break is for those who earned less than $150,000 in adjusted gross income and for unemployment insurance received during 2020. At this stage, unemployment compensation received this calendar year will be fully taxable on 2021 tax returns.
The $10,200 tax break is the amount of income exclusion for single filers, not the amount of the refund . The amount of the refund will vary per person depending on overall income, tax bracket and how much earnings came from unemployment benefits. So far, the refunds have averaged more than $1,600.
However, not everyone will receive a refund. The IRS can seize the refund to cover a past-due debt, such as unpaid federal or state taxes and child support. One way to know if a refund has been issued is to wait for the letter that the IRS is sending taxpayers whose returns are corrected. Those letters, issued within 30 days of the adjustment, will tell you if it resulted in a refund or if it was used to offset debt.
As the IRS continues issuing refunds, they will go out as a direct deposit if you provided bank account information on your 2020 tax return. A direct deposit amount will likely show up as IRS TREAS 310 TAXREF. Otherwise, the refund will be mailed as a paper check to whatever address the IRS has on hand.
