    The Virginia Employment Commission administers the unemployment compensation program that provides temporary financial assistance to individuals who become unemployed through no fault of their own. Benefits are paid through taxes on employers covered under the Virginia Unemployment Compensation Act. No part of the cost of your unemployment benefits is deducted from your earnings. Your name and social security number will be cross-matched with the Social Security Administration to verify your identity. To receive benefits you must meet each of the following:

    When you file an initial claim, you can expect your first payment within 14 calendar days after you file your weekly request for payment of benefits. You may not receive your payment on the same day of the week each time you file your request for payment. Timely payments depend on you meeting all weekly requirements as well.

    However, no payment will be issued if you have a separation or able and available issue on your claim, until those issues have been addressed and appropriate action taken on them.

    If you dont receive an anticipated payment, contact the VEC Customer Contact Center. However, you should wait at least 5 days after you file your request.

    Vec Will Again Require People On Unemployment To Apply For Two Jobs A Week

    RICHMOND, Va. The Virginia Employment Commission announced on Tuesday that it will begin requiring people who are receiving unemployment benefits to start applying for at least two jobs a week.

    Megan Healy, Chief Workforce Advisor for Gov. Northam, said this will go into effect on June 1.

    VEC said the active job search requirement is part of state and federal law but was temporarily suspended by Northam in March 2020 in response to the influx of unemployment claims at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. VEC said they have received 1.5 million claims since the pandemic began, which is more than a 1,000% increase from the previous year.

    Healy said the reinstatement of the requirement coincides with schools and childcare centers reopening, as well as vaccine eligibility opening up to all adults. Plus she says employers are desperate for workers.

    Customers are normally required to actively look for work while collecting unemployment benefits, said Ellen Marie Hess, commissioner of the VEC. With increased vaccination access, first in the nation workplace safety regulations, and a robust demand for workers from businesses, Virginia will resume collecting and reviewing work search activity of customers in the near future.

    VEC said it will notify people impacted with more details about these changes in May.

    Here is what you need to know:
