Start Receiving Your Benefit Payments
If you are approved for unemployment benefits, you will receive your benefit payment according to the payment preference that you selected upon applying for benefits.
Depending on your state, your payment options will include all or two of the following:
- Paper Check
- Unemployment Debit Card
If you select Direct Deposit, you will need the following information:
- Your Bank Routing Number , and
- Bank Account Number .
However, if you do not make a selection for a payment method, you are likely to receive your benefits on an unemployment debit card.
You are allowed to switch payment methods later, once you start receiving benefits.
S To Create An Online Account
IMPORTANT: USE A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS WHEN YOU CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT.
1. Click on Create an Online Account on the DES homepage, des.nc.gov.
2. Enter your Social Security Number twice.
3. Select Next. On the User Account Creation page:
- Create a User Name .
- Enter a valid email address twice.
- Create a PIN number .
- Enter your contact phone number.
- Create a Password .
4.Select Create Account.
5.You can now Sign In at des.nc.gov. Use the User Name and Password you entered when creating your Online Account in Step 3.

This automated self-service system can be employed by customers who do not need to speak to a representative. Information is available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.EDD representatives are available by phone Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. to 12 noon , except on California state holidays.

When you sign up for online services, you will select a User ID and password. Your password protects your identity and privacy. It has the same legal authority as your signature on a paper document. Do not give your password to anyone, not even to a family member or TWC employee. You are responsible for any payment request made using your User ID and password.

Work Search Requirement Reinstated
On Sunday, July 4, Maryland LABOR reinstated the standard active search for work requirement for all claimants receiving regular unemployment insurance benefits. Claimants receiving benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation federal programs must meet the active search for work requirement beginning Sunday, July 18, 2021.
All claimants must actively search for work by completing at least three valid reemployment activities each week, which must include at least one job contact. Claimants must satisfy the active search for work requirement to maintain their eligibility for UI benefits.
Valid reemployment activities are intended to help a claimant become reemployed and remove potential barriers to employment. Qualifying activities include, but are not limited to: activities completed through the Maryland Workforce Exchange , such as setting up a virtual recruiter or completing a skills self-assessment attending networking events creating a résumé in MWE and attending employment events held by the Maryland Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning . Job contacts refer to actions a claimant takes to contact employers in an attempt to secure employment. Acceptable job contacts include: submitting a job application to an employer interviewing for a job or completing a pre-screening for a job interview among other actions.

In order to do this, you must have created a username and password for the new system as well as completed the initial UI claims process which gathers your employment history. If you have completed any of these steps and need assistance, you can see our other tutorial to help you get started.
Ir oder to claim weekly benefits, you will need to file each week that you wish to receive payment. Benefit weeks begin on Sundays at 12:01 a.m. and end on the following Saturday at midnight.
You can only file for benefits for weeks that have been completed and then you have up to two weeks to file for that week. If you are eligible to file for multiple weeks, you must complete each week individually from start to finish and file the weeks from earliest to latest.
If there is a break in filing for two weeks or more, your claim will be inactivated. Let´s get started!
