If you are owed money and you’ve filed a tax return, the IRS will send you the money or use it to pay off other owed taxes automatically.
You typically don’t need to file an amended return in order to get this potential refund.
Instead, the IRS will adjust the tax return you’ve already submitted.
However, if you haven’t yet filed your tax return, you should report this reduction in unemployment income on your Form 1040.
The deadline to file your federal tax return was on May 17.
Reapplying For Unemployment Insurance Benefits
If you are not able to file your weekly claim certification this week, please check your BEACON portal to see if you have an âApply for Benefitsâ button. If you have this button, there could be several reasons including, but not limited to:
- You did not apply for benefits last week,
- Your benefit year has expired , or
- Your monetary eligibility needs to be redetermined.
Even if your account is active and you have a balance, if you have an âApply for Benefitsâ button, then you need to re-apply for benefits to be able to file your weekly certification as required by Maryland unemployment law and federal program rules.
If you wish to re-apply for benefits, you should access your BEACON portal from an internet browser, click on the âApply for Benefitsâ link on your home page, and follow the steps. You cannot complete this process from the MD Unemployment for Claimants Mobile App.
Reminder: Claimants have through Saturday, June 12 to file their weekly certification for the week. If you have successfully filed your weekly certification this week, please ignore this message. There are no issues with the BEACON system.
Could Pandemic Benefits Be Reinstated
As the federal expiration deadline approached, White House officials made it clear they were not planning to continue the enhanced jobless benefits past Labor Day, saying they were intended to be temporary. When multiple states pulled out of pandemic-era unemployment programs prematurely during the summer, Labor Department officials had said their hands were tied and they couldn’t counter decisions by governors.
On Sept. 15, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced that she would be introducing a bill to retroactively extend enhanced jobless benefits until February 2022. Saying she’s not sure of the prospects of the legislation being passed, Ocasio-Cortez noted that she “could not allow this to happen without at least trying.” The following day, she and 12 other Democratic lawmakers wrote a letter to the House leadership urging them to include an expansion of unemployment aid in the $3.5 trillion budget package known as the Build Back Better Act.
It’s not clear at this time which states will choose to use any leftover pandemic funds to continue jobless benefits. According to a CBS News report, not every state has shut the door to continuing some benefits, with some local officials reviewing options for providing assistance after the Labor Day expiration.

Why Did Benefits End Early In So Many States
Citing labor shortages in the spring, 26 state governors claimed pandemic-related unemployment benefits were producing limited incentives for workers to take jobs. Many economists and analysts disagreed, highlighting several factors that prevented people from finding suitable work, including low wages, lack of health care, inadequate child care and fear of contracting COVID-19.
With unemployment claims still fluctuating as the economy struggles to return to pre-pandemic “normalcy,” reports are showing that the early cancellation of the federal programs had little impact on labor markets. A recent JP Morgan Chase Institute study confirmed that states that ended supplemental unemployment insurance programs during the summer saw a limited impact on job growth.
According to an August report by the Century Foundation’s Andrew Stettner, “Politics, not economics, drove the attack on unemployment insurance.” The states that cut off the enhanced benefits before the federal expiration were mostly Republican-led.
Arkansas, Indiana and Maryland were slated to cut off benefits early, but successful lawsuits forced those states to preserve the federal coverage, at least temporarily. In issuing their rulings, judges noted that the ending of benefits made it harder for the unemployed to afford basic needs. Lawsuits were also filed against state governors elsewhere, which were either denied by judges or are still held up in the courts.

The IRS says that you can expect a delay if you mailed a paper tax return or had to respond to the IRS about your electronically filed tax return. The IRS makes it clear not to file a second return.
The IRS says not to call the agency because it has limited live assistance. The agency is juggling the tax return backlog, delayed stimulus checks and child tax credit payments. The IRS has sent 8.7 million unemployment compensation refunds so far.
This summer, the IRS started making adjustments on 2020 tax returns and issuing refunds averaging around $1,600 to those who qualify for a $10,200 unemployment tax break. The tax agency said adjustments would be made throughout the summer, but the last batch of refunds — which went out to some 1.5 million taxpayers — was two months ago. No rounds of payments seem to have gone out last month, and it’s already October.
Here’s a summary of what those refunds are about: The first $10,200 of 2020 jobless benefits was made nontaxable income by the American Rescue Plan in March, so taxpayers who filed their returns before the legislation and paid taxes on those benefits are due money back.

When Will I Get The Refund
Unemployment tax refunds started landing in bank accounts in May and will run through the summer, as the IRS processes the returns.
The first phase includes the simplest returns, made by single taxpayers who didn’t claim for children or any refundable tax credits.
More complicated ones may then take longer to process.
In mid-July, the IRS issued 4million refunds, of which those by direct deposit landed in bank accounts from July 14.
Meanwhile, households who receive the cash refund by paper check could expect this from July 16.
Another batch of payments were then sent out at the end of July, with direct deposits on July 28 and paper checks on July 30.
The IRS didn’t announce any payouts for August and is yet to reveal the upcoming refund schedule too.
Am I Eligible For A Stimulus Check
To qualify for the stimulus check, first of all, you need to have a Social Security number. That means that undocumented people, even those who pay taxes, have been totally left out of the governmentâs aid effort right off the bat. Also, people who are listed on their tax filing as dependents â including many college students â will not be eligible.
If you do have a Social Security number, then your eligibility is determined by your gross annual income. For individuals, the income you reported on your 2018 or 2019 taxes is under $99,000, then you will be eligible for at least some amount. If your income was below $75,000, then you will receive the full $1200. For gross incomes between $75,000 and $99,000, the check will be scaled down by $5 for every $100 of gross income youâve reported above $75,000, per the Internal Revenue Service.
If you have children and you filed your taxes as the head of a household, or you are married and filed jointly, the eligibility threshold is a bit higher. For heads of households with one child, the maximum gross annual income you could earn and still receive a check is $136,500. If you earned less than the baseline income of $112,500, youâll receive the full stimulus check the payment will scale down from there until $136,500, where it will cut off entirely. For childless married couples, the top possible annual income is $198,000 and the baseline is $150,000.

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that it takes two to three weeks on average to receive your first benefit check after you file a state unemployment claim. In California and some other states, there is a one-week waiting period that is not covered by payment. Who Lost Federal Unemployment Benefits On Labor Day
At the very start of the pandemic, the March 2020 CARES Act established temporary federal unemployment aid programs, and the American Rescue Plan in March 2021 extended those benefits to Labor Day. Here’s who was affected by the programs’ expiration, according to a detailed analysis of Labor Department data by the Century Foundation.
More than 3 million additional people lost Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, the weekly bonus — initially $600, then $300 — that helped out-of-work Americans supplement benefits and recover some lost wages.
