Do You Meet The Minimum Wage Requirement

Virtually all states look at your recent work history and income over a one-year base period to determine your unemployment entitlement.

In Oregon, as in most states, the base period is the earliest four of the five full calendar quarters before you submitted your benefit claim.

During the base period, you must meet at least one of the following requirements to become unemployed:

  • You must have earned at least $ 1,000 wages during the base period and your total base period wage must be at least 1.5 times the salary in the highest quarter of your base period, or
  • You must have worked at least 500 hours during the base period.

How Long Does It Take To Get Unemployment In Oregon

You must successfully complete an initial waiting week which takes place the first week your application is filed. If your application is successfully processed, your first payment will be made in the third week of your unemployment. If you submit your Oregon unemployment weekly claim on Sunday or Monday, payment will be made on Tuesday. Electronic payments issued on Tuesday will normally appear in accounts on Wednesday. Federal or bank holidays will delay payments.

In Oregon, the first payment of your new claim is normally sent by a physical paper check. All subsequent payments made by the Oregon unemployment department are either made by a Visa debit card or by direct deposit. You must apply for direct deposit, otherwise the default payment mode is by a debit card.

Direct deposit means that your benefits will automatically be deposited to your savings or checking account at your bank, credit union or other financial institution of your choosing. To sign up for direct deposit, you must use the Online Claim System and select electronic deposit from the main menu. You will be directed to print an Authorization for Electronic Deposit Form which you will then send into the Employment Department. Normally, it takes the department about two weeks to verify account information. Until that time, you will receive your benefit payments by a paper check.

Filing for Oregon unemployment? Here are some tips

Once you click on Claim Weekly Benefits, you will login using the information you created during your initial claim process. You must answer the following questions:

  • Were you available and able to work?
    • If not, why? Give a good explanation here.
  • Did you actively search for work this week?
    • If not, why? Again, give accurate information here.
    • If you did, include the name of at least five contacts , including:
      • Turning in an application
      • Emailing an employer about a job
      • Turning in an application using Oregon’s work search program
      • Attending a job fair
  • Did you earn any wages this week?
    • If you did, input an accurate amount. Failure to report wages accurately may result in criminal charges.
  • Did you accept suitable full-time work?
    • If so, with whom? What kind of work are you doing and how much are you getting paid?
  • Were you offered a suitable full-time job that you turned down?

If you were laid off, lost your job in a reduction-in-force , or got “downsized” for economic reasons, you will still meet this requirement.

Collecting Unemployment After Being Fired

If you were fired because you lacked the skills to perform the job or simply weren’t a good fit, you won’t necessarily be barred from receiving benefits. However, if you engaged in “misconduct,” you will not be eligible to receive unemployment. In Oregon, among other things, misconduct means an intentional violation of the employer’s rules, the failure to conform to standards which an employer can reasonably expect from an employee, or careless behavior that is so frequent or severe that it shows a disregard for the employer’s interests. For example, showing up to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs or having several unexcused absences after written warning would typically qualify as misconduct.

The Unemployment Registration Process In Oregon

The unemployment registration process enables the former employee to create a four-digit Personal Identification Number the first time he or she attempts to file for unemployment. This PIN will always be needed when an unemployment applicant uses either system.

Approximately 10 days after filing the unemployment EDD application in Oregon, the UI petitioner will receive his or her Wage and Potential Benefit Report. In addition to providing the wages reported by the base year and the weekly benefit amount, the Wage and Potential Benefit Report also includes the claimants Customer Identification Number . The federal unemployment benefits CID is a unique number assigned only to that claimant. It is used on documents as a safeguard in conjunction with the applicants Social Security number. This measure helps to protect the petitioner claiming benefits for unemployment from identity theft and fraud. The claimant will need his or her PIN and CID to update personal information online. An unemployment insurance benefits recipient can change his or her mailing address, or apply for electronic direct deposit. The CID is not given out if the claimant loses track of it, so he or she needs to keep a record of it. They can also obtain their CID by bringing a photo ID to a WorkSource Oregon center and asking a Department representative.
