How Much Is Health Insurance Without A Job

The cost of a health insurance plan without a job can vary. However, there are ways to lower your costs if you choose an Affordable Care Act health insurance plan. When you begin shopping for an individual health insurance plan, you should pay special attention to subsidies. If you qualify for them, subsidies can lower the cost of your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. Here are two of the main subsidy types.

  • A premium tax credit is a type of subsidy that can help lower your monthly premiums, if youre eligible. You can choose to have the credit paid directly to your health insurance provider to be applied toward your premium,2 or you can claim your premium amount when you file your income tax return.3
  • A cost-sharing reduction , also called extra savings, is a type of subsidy that can help lower your out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. If you qualify, you have to enroll in a Silver plan to get the extra savings.

You can check your eligibility for these subsidies online.

Who Is Eligible For Unemployment

The unemployment-based subsidies are available to anyone who has received or been approved to receive unemployment compensation at any time this year.

Eligibility for the unemployment-based subsidies includes people whose income is under the federal poverty level, as long as theyre not eligible for Medicaid. People with income under the poverty level are normally not eligible for subsidies, which means theres a coverage gap in the states that have refused to accept federal funding to expand Medicaid. But a person who would otherwise be in the coverage gap can receive a full premium subsidy and full cost-sharing reductions in 2021, if they receive unemployment compensation at any time during the year.

CMS has confirmed that the full premium subsidies are only available if its a taxpayer who is receiving the unemployment compensation. If its a dependent who is receiving it, the household is eligible for the cost-sharing reductions , but not the full premium subsidies.

Even if you only received unemployment compensation for one week of 2021, youre potentially eligible for the enhanced subsidies for the entire year. But subsidy eligibility would end if and when you become eligible for employer-sponsored health coverage , or premium-free Medicare Part A.

The ARP has not fixed the family glitch, so family members would also lose access to any subsidies in the exchange if they become eligible for employer-sponsored coverage thats considered affordable for the employee.

What Is Cobra Insurance And Is It Worth It

COVID

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, commonly known as COBRA, is a federally mandated program through which you can retain your employer’s policy for up to 18 months. If you do elect COBRA coverage, be prepared to pay significantly higher monthly premiums youll be required to cover the amount your employer was contributing plus a 2% administration fee. Oftentimes COBRA isnt worth it, as most unemployed individuals can find a much more affordable policy on the marketplace.

Individual Private Health Insurance

Individual private health insurance is a plan you purchase from a non-government exchange. Shopping on a private exchange, like eHealth, allows you to have more variety in your coverage options. You will also have the option of shopping for ACA-compliant plans, and youll even be able to apply for subsidies through eHealth by proxy.

Keep in mind that since the ARPA expanded qualifications for subsidies, you might now be eligible for assistance even if you did not qualify before. According to the new rules, enrollees now do not pay more than 8.5% of their income towards their insurance coverage, which has been reduced from nearly 10% under the prior limits. In addition, those earning more than 400% of the federal poverty level may now qualify for subsidies. In 2021, that includes individuals making about $51,000 or less annually and families of four making more than $104,800 annually.

If you find that subsidies arent an option for you, youll also be able to shop for alternative individual and family plans that may offer less benefits but be within in your price range. Short-term health insurance and catastrophic plans are two options that fall into this category.

Take Care Of Yourself

Keeping your health insurance in force is an important self-care step, but there are other actions you can take, too. For example:

  • Get enough sleep. If stress is keeping you up at night, try meditating or listening to relaxing music. You can find hours of music optimized for sleep on YouTube.
  • Cut back on sugar. Too much sugar in your diet has negative effects on your mood, your kidneys, your joints, your liver, and your heart. Eating lots of sugar also causes you to crave more sugar.
  • Eat right. Maintaining a healthy diet is challenging when cash is tight. One thing works in your favor, though: You can replace expensive and fatty meats with healthier, cheaper things like tofu, beans, quinoa, and eggs. You can also lean on affordable veggies, including broccoli, cabbage, and sweet potatoes.
  • Stay up on exercise. Exercise is a proven stress reliever. Keep your routine light and low-impact to avoid injury. Try stretching, walking, and light hiking.
  • Continue to practice social distancing.
  • Wash your hands often and avoid touching your face.

These healthy living habits can help minimize your out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to be done about the cost of healthcare premiums. Enrolling in your spouse’s plan is the cheapest option, while COBRA will be the most expensive. The healthcare marketplace should have mid-range options, although the deductibles and coinsurance may be less appealing.

Find Out If You’re Eligible For Medicaid

COBRA HEALTH INSURANCE EXPLAINED: I Lost My Job! Is COBRA an Option Now That I’m Unemployed?

Medicaid is a federal program that provides health insurance for people with low incomes. It may be known by different names in different states, and eligibility can vary from state to state. When you apply for Marketplace health insurance, your eligibility for Medicaid is automatically assessed. If you are determined to be eligible, the appropriate state agency will contact you about applying.

If you have children aged 19 and younger, and your income is too high to qualify for Medicaid, your children might be eligible for health insurance through the Children’s Health Insurance Program . When you apply for Medicaid, you’ll be notified if your children qualify for CHIP.

You can enroll in both Medicaid and CHIP year-roundno need to wait for open enrollment.

How Do You Apply For Short

Most short-term plans are easy to apply for and can be a helpful solution if youre looking for medical insurance for a period of time. The premiums tend to be affordable. However, the deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses for short-term plans are usually more expensive than those for comprehensive ACA health plans.

Tips If Youre Unemployed And Need Health Care

It might be impossible to predict when your job could be coming to an end, but there are things you can do to keep yourself ahead of the game and have a backup plan if you suddenly find yourself out of work and out of health insurance.

1. Start to find new coverage as soon as possible.

Even before you leave a job, theres nothing wrong with talking to those helpful folks in Human Resources about your health insurance benefits and what will happen to them if you leave. Youll be able to find out how much COBRA coverage will cost you and use this info to decide whether to stick with COBRA or go it alone in the health insurance marketplace.

2. Have all your important details ready.

When youre all set to talk COBRA or marketplace or even Medicaid, heres the information you should have ready: your income, total household income, Social Security number, pay stubs, tax records, information about your current health insurance plan, and the number of dependents in your household.

3. Get advice from an independent insurance agent.

4. Keep your emergency fund full.

An emergency fund is a must no matter what your situation is in life! But its super important if youre out of work and out of health insurance coverage. Your emergency fund takes away the worry of those unpredictable trips to the doctor and routine checkups that come with out-of-pocket costs. Having a fully funded emergency fund will give you the ability to pay for insurance during a gap period without all the stress.
