What Can I Do To Extend Unemployment Benefits In Florida

If you are interested about learning how to get an unemployment extension in Florida, you must first note the eligibility requirements of your state. Although an unemployment extension applicant may be eligible for regular reemployment assistance, such eligibility does not necessarily make an individual qualified for unemployment compensation extension. In times when the rate of unemployment is high, state governments must make careful choices and select the candidates to whom they will continue to pay benefits. If, however, you are found eligible, you will receive a confirmation in the mail that notes for how long you may receive reemployment assistance. Note, however, that you can apply for unemployment benefits extension only if the state activates emergency programs. Extensions are not available otherwise, therefore after your regular unemployment benefit period has passed, you will not be eligible to receive any more benefits. If you are wondering how to get an unemployment extension of benefits and whether you will be eligible, visit your nearest DEO office to inquire. If you are eligible for extended benefits, the amount you will receive will match the amount of your regular unemployment benefits.

Do You Meet The Minimum Earnings Requirement

Virtually all states look at your recent work history and earnings during a one-year “base period” to determine your eligibility for unemployment. In Florida, as in most states, the base period is the earliest four of the five complete calendar quarters before you filed your claim for benefits. For example, if you filed your claim in October of 2021, the base period would be from June 1, 2020, through May 31, 2021.

During the base period, your work history and earnings must meet all three of these requirements:

  • You must have been paid wages in at least two of the four calendar quarters that make up the base period.
  • Your earnings during the entire base period must be at least one-and-a-half times your wages in the highest paid quarter of the base period. For example, if you earned $5,000 during your highest paid quarter, your total earnings for the base period year must be at least $7,500.
  • You must have earned at least $3,400 during the entire base period.

States must have a process for determining that Pandemic Unemployment Assistance applicants are ineligible for regular unemployment benefits, which may not include filing a regular claim as a first step. States are not required to take and adjudicate a full claim for regular unemployment insurance benefits to meet this requirement. While states are not prohibited from taking a full claim, to facilitate expedited claims processing the U.S. Department of Labor has discouraged states from doing so. Individuals should apply using the states PUA application process and, in states that have not yet established that process, must wait until it is established.

How Will I Receive My Payments

You wont receive any money during the first week that youre eligible for Reemployment Assistance. This is known as the waiting week, which runs from Sunday to Saturday. So if you apply on a Wednesday, for example, youll have to wait a week and a half for benefits to start unless the state waives the waiting period.

Take note that these benefits arent paid out automatically. If your application is approved, youll need to log into CONNECT and manually request your benefits using the Request Benefit Payment option. This will take you through a brief survey to verify that youre able to meet ongoing requirements. After that, youll need to log in again every two weeks to complete the survey and request a benefits payment.

You have only two options for how to receive your money. The first option is to have it directly deposited into your bank account. But the state doesnt accept all banks, so if thats not an option or if youd rather opt for something else, your second option is to receive your payments on a prepaid Way2Go debit card. But be careful with this this option because there are fees for using the card, although the website doesnt specify what these are. Make sure you read the fine print if, for example, you want to use your debit card to make an ATM withdrawal.

One Of My Workers Quit Because He Said He Would Prefer To Receive The Unemployment Compensation Benefits Under The Cares Act Is He Eligible For Unemployment If Not What Can I Do

No, typically that employee would not be eligible for regular unemployment compensation or PUA. Eligibility for regular unemployment compensation varies by state but generally does not include those who voluntarily leave employment. Similarly, to receive PUA, an individual must be ineligible for regular unemployment compensation or extended benefits under state or federal law, or pandemic emergency unemployment compensation, and satisfy one of the eligibility criteria enumerated in the CARES Act, as explained in Unemployment Insurance Program Letter 16-20. There are multiple qualifying circumstances related to COVID-19 that can make an individual eligible for PUA, including if the individual quits his or her job as a direct result of COVID-19. Quitting to access unemployment benefits is not one of them. Individuals who quit their jobs to access higher benefits, and are untruthful in their UI application about their reason for quitting, will be considered to have committed fraud.

If desired, employers can contest unemployment insurance claims through their state unemployment insurance agencys process.

Reasons You May Not Be Eligible

Unemployed Florida workers struggle to recover, receive benefits

There are a number of situations that might affect whether you can receive, or continue to receive, Reemployment Assistance benefits.

Things like quitting your job without a reason or being fired because of your own misconduct could disqualify you from benefits. You also need to be monetarily eligible, meaning you have worked enough in the recent past to qualify.

Once you start getting your benefits, they can get cut off for things like not being able and available to work or failing to show up at a mandatory reemployment services appointment.

Some jobs simply do not qualify for Reemployment Assistance, such as children under 21 years old who have been working for their parents or inmates who have been laboring under a work release program.

To see a full list of everything that might affect whether you qualify for Reemployment Assistance, read this DEO document: Reasons for State or Federal Reemployment Assistance Ineligibility.

While generally ineligible, independent contractors may be able to collect benefits if they were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Visit the Unemployment Related to COVID-19 section of our Coronavirus Resources Page for more details.
