Am I Eligible For Unemployment Benefits
To be eligible for unemployment benefit payments in West Virginia, you must:
- Be unemployed through no fault of your own
- Have been paid wages of at least $2,200 during your base period and earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period. “Base period” refers to the first four quarters of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file a claim. . If you have not earned enough during this period, you may be able to qualify using an alternate base period.
Normally, you would also need to be able and available for work, and actively seeking it in order to receive benefits. However, West Virginia has waived these requirements during the COVID-19 outbreak. You will still need to complete a weekly claim application.

He was unemployed for four months earlier this year and has since found work, but says hes still behind from being out of work back then.
I got approved and got a letter stating how much I would get, he said, adding it turned out to be $7,800.
Still, he says he has yet to see any benefits.
Usually you cant get through but every now and then I get through, and all I get is Im backlogged, thats all they can tell me, he said.

We asked the VEC specifically Thursday morning about how the agency has addressed the problems with the customer service line. We will update this story with any response.

You will be given instructions on how to use the VRS when you apply for benefits. Follow the instructions very carefully. The instructions below apply to both Internet weekly requests for payment and VRS weekly requests for payment.
File your weekly request for payment of benefits correctly and accurately, as soon as the week has passed. You will not be paid benefits, even if you are qualified and eligible to receive them, if you fail to file your weekly request for payment.
Remember that the claim week does not end until after midnight on Saturday of the week being claimed and will not be available to you to file until after that time.
Your first weekly request for payment of benefits must be filed with the VEC after the week in which you file your application for benefits ends, but no later than 28 days after the date you filed your application.

How To Appeal A Denial Of Unemployment Benefits In Virginia
If your unemployment claim is denied, you have 30 days to appeal the decision to the VEC. A hearing will be held on your appeal, at which you may testify, present witnesses, and offer evidence before the Appeals Examiner makes a decision.

Extended benefits are additional weeks of unemployment compensation that are available to workers who have exhausted regular unemployment insurance benefits during periods of high unemployment.
