How To Apply For Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation

FPUC was extended by the American Rescue Plan until September 6, 2021. It is no longer possible to apply for FPUC as of September 2021, and the information below is no longer valid if you are seeking unemployment.

To apply for Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, you must file a claim for regular benefits with the UI program in the state where you worked. Depending on the state, you can file a claim in person, online, or over the phone most states recommend filing online. When you file a claim, you must provide your Social Security number, contact information, and details about your former employment. To find out the rules in your state, check with your state’s unemployment insurance program.

Under the current FPUC program, states administered an extra $300 weekly payment to eligible people who receive regular unemployment benefits , as well those collecting benefits from the following programs:

  • Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation
  • Trade Readjustment Allowances
  • Disaster Unemployment Assistance

When states provide the extra payment, eligible people will receive retroactive payments. FPUC was extended by the American Rescue Plan to go until Sept. 6, 2021, however, a number of states chose to end their enrollment in the program early. Check with your state’s unemployment office to determine the duration of your benefits.

What Is The Difference Between Eligibility And Qualification

Eligibility involves working and earning enough money within your base period to establish a claim for benefits, and meeting the requirements of searching for work and being able and available for work. Eligibility is determined weekly. Ineligibility is a postponement of benefits until you meet the weekly requirements. Qualification involves being separated from work through no fault of your own. Disqualification is a loss of benefits. It is possible to be eligible and disqualified for benefits. It is also possible to be ineligible and qualified for benefits. You must be both qualified and eligible to receive benefits.

How Do I Apply For The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation ...

Not only does each state have its own unemployment rules, each state also pays out a different amount for unemployment.

In many states, youll get roughly half of what you earned at your job each week for up to 26 weeks. But other states have a different formula thats less generous, so the overall average replacement rate is closer to 40%. And in some states, the benefits period can be as short as 12 weeks.

But as part of the same CARES Act that expanded eligibility, Congress also added an additional 13 weeks of unemployment funding. So right now, depending on your state, you might be eligible for up to 39 weeks of unemployment benefits.

Also, each state has a cap, or maximum amount, you can get, and that maximum amount varies significantly depending on where you live. According to figures provided by Evermore, the lowest is $235 in Mississippi, and the highest is in Massachusetts at $1,192, including additional dependent allowances.

So if you were lucky enough to have a well-paying job, youll probably get a lot less than half of your previous salary each week from your unemployment claim.

In most states, you are eligible to receive up to 26 weeks of unemployment compensation. A few states allow fewer weeks and a few allow more. After you file your initial claim, you must check in each week to indicate whether or not you found work that week. In most states, you can do this online or by phone.

While you are receiving unemployment compensation, you must be actively willing to work and actively looking for work. What those terms mean varies by state. You may be required to meet in person with an unemployment department representative periodically to get help with finding a new job. This may be an individual or group meeting. You will want to bring all your documentation with you to this meeting to show where you have applied for work. In some states, you are required to apply to a certain number of jobs per week.

While regulations can require you to apply to jobs and look for work, they cannot make you take a job that is very different than your usual type of work and wages. Apply only for jobs that you would normally consider taking.

File During Odd Hours Or On Your Assigned Day

Even with unemployment dropping in recent months, states are still inundated with claims, so even when youre filing online, dont be surprised if you encounter a problem or delay during at least one point in the process. You might try applying either early or late in the day or even in the middle of the night if youre awake in order to get your claim through the system.

Some states are also asking certain groups to apply on certain days, such as Hawaii, which is requesting that people whose last names start with A through G file on Mondays, H through O on Tuesdays and P through Z on Wednesdays. Youll need to check with your state to find out its specific rules.

That being said, if youve lost your job, make it a priority to file as quickly as you can, as waiting delays getting your claim approved. Unfortunately, there arent many tricks to getting through other than being persistent.

What Are My Options If My Initial Claim Is Denied

How to File a Claim for Unemployment

Claims for unemployment benefits can be denied for a few reasons:

    • If you voluntarily quit your job, your claim will probably be denied. In some states, you can receive benefits after quitting if you can show just cause for leaving, but these cases are rare.

    • If you are fired for misconduct or poor performance, your claim may be denied.

    • Severance pay may disqualify you from receiving unemployment benefits, at least temporarily. You will likely have to wait until you have received all your severance pay before you can begin collecting unemployment benefits.

    • If you are unable to work, then your claim will be denied until you can work again. Some typical reasons for this are illness or family issues.

    • If you are dishonest about your job situation, your claim can be denied. For example, if you get a new job but you do not report it, that is considered fraud. If you find work as an independent contractor and dont report the income, this is also considered fraud. You can be forced to repay benefits that you did not qualify for, or you could even face jail time.

    • If you did not have enough earnings during the base period or the alternate base period, your claim may be denied.

If your initial claim is denied, you do have an avenue of appeal. The process varies by state, but you should be advised of your right to appeal when you receive notice that your claim is denied.
