Turbotax Unemployment Tax Break Update

Have TurboTax and H& R Block Updated For the $10,200 Exclusion Yet?

Since this new tax change is passed after the start of the tax season, some taxpayers may have filed their federal income tax returns already. In that case, there is either something you need to follow or not. It depends on when you filed and whether the Internal Revenue Service processed your tax return or not.

Planning For 2021 Taxes If Youre Still Unemployed

The tax exemption for $10,200 in unemployment benefits currently only applies to unemployment income you collected in 2020, even though the bill also extended weekly $300 federal unemployment benefits payments through September.

You should consider any unemployment benefits you receive in 2021 as fully taxable. If you can afford to do so, avoid a surprise bill and penalties next tax season by electing to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits payments or by paying quarterly estimated taxes throughout the year.

You can elect to have 10% of your unemployment benefits withheld from your weekly check. Even if you did not select this withholding on your original claim, you can file Form W-4V with your states unemployment office to begin 10% tax withholding on future unemployment payments.

You can also forgo automatic withholding and instead pay estimated quarterly taxes on your unemployment income. Use Form 1040-ES to figure and file your quarterly payments. If you choose to pay estimated taxes on your unemployment benefits, the first payment is due April 15, 2021.

Expanded Child Tax Credit

Beginning in tax year 2021 the Child Tax Credit will be expanded. The bill increases the amount that families claiming the Child Tax Credit receive from $2,000 to:

  • $3,600 for each child under 6
  • $3,000 for each child age 6-17

The credit is now fully refundable that means that you are eligible for the credit even if you dont owe taxes.

Although this credit is for next years tax filings, payments will also be sent in advance, over the course of the year, beginning no earlier than July 2021 so people dont have to wait to file their 2021 taxes. The IRS will likely determine eligibility based on your most recent tax filing.

The American Rescue Plan passed the House today. The legislation still includes a $1,400 stimulus check for eligible Americans, expanded unemployment, and tax relief on unemployment benefits for households making under $150,000. The legislation will now go back to the President to be signed into law and we anticipate this will happen on Friday.

The American Rescue Plan passed the Senate today. As it stands today, the legislation agreement includes a $1,400 stimulus check for eligible Americans, expanded unemployment, and tax relief on unemployment benefits for households making under $150,000. Deductions And Credits Phaseout Adjustments

In line with the adjustments for inflation, many tax deductions and tax credits will have their phaseouts adjusted to account for these changes. Some phaseout changes to note are:

    • Earned Income Tax Credit: The maximum credit for filing jointly as a married couple and claiming three or more qualifying dependents amounts to $6,728 in 2021, with the credit completely phased out at $57,414 of adjusted gross income . If you are a single filer with no dependents, you can receive a maximum credit of $1,502 with your phaseout beginning at $11,610 of AGI
    • The Alternative Minimum Tax: Higher exemptions and income phaseouts will occur in 2021.
    • IRA contributions: Contribution amounts remain the same in 2021, but phaseout levels for taking deductions for these contributions increase as follows:
    • For active participants in employer retirement plans, phaseout for making individual retirement account contributions will occur at AGIs between $66,000 and $76,000 for single and head of household filers, $105,000 and $125,000 for joint returns
    • For those with IRAs who do not actively participate in another plan but their spouse does, phaseout will now range from $198,000 to $208,000 for those that are married and filing a joint return. For a married individual filing separately, the phase-out range is not subject to an annual cost-of-living adjustment and remains between $0 to $10,000.
    • Phaseouts do not apply if neither the taxpayer nor the spouse has a workplace retirement plan

    Victims Of Unemployment Fraud

Whenever the government starts sending checks, criminals will try to get their hands on some of that money. That’s certainly the case with the unemployment compensation tax refunds. The good news is that you won’t be punished if a crook uses your name and personal information to steal a tax refund from Uncle Sam.

So, for example, if you received an incorrect Form 1099-G for unemployment benefits that you didn’t receive, the IRS won’t adjust your tax return to add the unemployment compensation to your taxable income. You should still report the fraud to the state workforce agency that issued the incorrect form, though.

Tax Returns And Third Stimulus Payment

The bills mid-tax season passage may have caused a lot of confusion for unemployed taxpayers trying to determine the best time to file.

But the good news, says , senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, is that you will receive the full amount youre owed, even if there is a delay.

For taxpayers whose stimulus eligibility was processed based on 2019 returns, at some point possibly later this year, but definitely when they file a tax return next year the IRS will bump up the money and send an additional amount or what they would have received based on 2020 income.

In other words, you may have to reconcile your payment using a similar claim to the Recovery Rebate Credit for the previous two stimulus payments.
