The Virginia Employment Commission administers the unemployment compensation program that provides temporary financial assistance to individuals who become unemployed through no fault of their own. Benefits are paid through taxes on employers covered under the Virginia Unemployment Compensation Act. No part of the cost of your unemployment benefits is deducted from your earnings. Your name and social security number will be cross-matched with the Social Security Administration to verify your identity. To receive benefits you must meet each of the following:

This document explains these requirements and will assist you in filing for benefits. Read it carefully and retain it for your records. Note: If you reside in another state and filed your claim against Virginia, you are subject to Virginias unemployment laws, rules, regulations, and the requirements contained in this document.
The base period is set by law and will not change during the life of your unemployment claim. If you qualify monetarily, your claim remains in effect for one year. This period is called a benefit year.
You Have Options For How To Receive Your Unemployment Benefits
Millions of workers have filed for unemployment insurance benefits as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. If youve lost your job or a portion of your income, you can apply for benefits through your state unemployment program, and if you qualify, you have options for how you can receive this money.
In most states, you can receive your money either on a state-issued prepaid debit card or by having it directly deposited into your own bank or credit union account or onto an existing prepaid card. In some states, receiving paper checks is also an option. While the majority of workers who are eligible for unemployment benefits have already filed as a result of COVID-19, many states will allow you to make changes to the way you receive your benefits.

How Unemployment Insurance Works In New Mexico
The first eligible week of each new claim is a waiting week. You will not receive benefits for this week, but you must certify to receive credit for your waiting week. You must meet the same eligibility requirements for a waiting week as you would for a payable week.
Your claim is established for a 52-week period called a Benefit Year. It begins with the effective date of your claim. You can file weekly requests for benefits until your claim has ended or you have exhausted your benefits. You may also file if you have earnings from part-time employment that are less than your weekly benefit amount.
At the end of your Benefit Year, your claim will end whether or not youve received all available benefits. If youre unemployed at that time, youll need to file a new claim for benefits.

Will New York Unemployment Be Extended Again In 2021 Or End Early
With several states ending federally funded unemployment benefits earlier than planned to encourage workers to return to work, there was a concern this action could spread nationwide. But the good news for unemployed New Yorkers is that most of the states cancelling unemployment benefits are Republican led, which New York is most certainly not.
As a result New York is keeping ALL pandemic unemployment benefits, including the extra $300 weekly payment, until the current program end date which would be the week ending September 4th, 2021 in NY.
However it should be noted that work search requirements are being more rigorously enforced by the NY DOL and there will be a lot more scrutiny of job rejections if not for pandemic or health related reasons. During times of emergencies and natural disasters, the rates of scam activities increase. Its important to stay vigilant and aware of scammers who may pretend to be a government agency in order to gain access to your personal information.
Possible scams include emails, texts, phone calls, or social media messages that appear to come from the U.S. Department of Labor or your states unemployment office, asking you to verify your personal information, including your name, Social Security number, or bank account information. Scammers often also ask for up-front fees in order to process your payments or application.

When To Sign Up For Direct Deposit
The easiest and most convenient way to sign up for direct deposit is when you first apply for benefits. Complete the direct deposit section on your application.
If you receive benefits by cheque, or if you recently applied for benefits, you can easily sign up for direct deposit online through My Service Canada Account.

Receiving your benefit payments
If eligible, you will receive your first benefit payment in the form of a paper check, approximately 3-4 weeks after applying for benefits. After your first payment, you will receive benefits via the debit card unless you sign up for direct deposit to a checking or savings account.
Once you set up direct deposit, it will take 9 business days to verify your bank account. While your bank account is being verified, you must continue to request benefits weekly and certify your eligibility using TeleCert or UI Online. Once your claim has been approved, your benefits will be deposited into your account 2 business days after you request your weekly benefits.

What You Need Before You Sign Up
To sign up for direct deposit, you will need to gather the following personal information:
- the name of your bank or financial institution
- the branch/transit number and
- your account number
Your banking information can be found at the bottom of any cheque for the account in which you would like to have your payment deposited.
If you do not have a chequing account you can ask your financial institution for this information.
Certify For Weekly Benefits
Once you have filed a claim for benefits, you must also claim weekly benefits for each week you are unemployed and meet the eligibility requirements. This is also called certifying for benefits. You can start certifying as soon as you receive a notification from the DOL. During this process, you are confirming that you were unemployed for all or part of the past week and that you met all other conditions of receiving benefits. You may certify online or by telephone.
You will need to certify your benefits every single week, or you will lose them. This means that you need to log into your account and verify that you are still eligible for the benefits each week.

Why Isnt My Direct Deposit Showing Up
Sometimes when your direct deposit doesnt show up as planned, the reason is simply that it has just taken a few extra days to process. This might be due to holidays or because the request to transfer money accidentally went out after business hours. Give it at least 24 hours before you start worrying.
What If I Am Denied Benefits
Youre not out of options if youre denied benefits. Youll have 15 days to send an appeal from the date your Monetary Determination letter was mailed, and you can file an appeal online through the Unemployment Insurance Tax & Claims system.
If your appeal is successful, youll only receive benefits for claims you filed throughout that time. So even if your first claim is denied, keep submitting weekly claims until you know the outcome of your appeal.
If your fist appeal doesnt end in your favor, youll have another 15 days to send an appeal to the Cabinet Secretary. If the Secretary still denies your claim, you can also take your appeal to district court within 30 days of the Secretarys denial.

How Does The Unemployment Debit Card Workdebitcard
You can use your unemployment debit card to get cash at any bank that accepts Visa® or any U.S. Bank ATM without a fee. You can also make purchases with the card at any business that accepts Visa® debit cards.
You should receive your card in the mail in a plain white envelope about five to seven business days after your first payment is made. If you do not receive your card and a payment was made, call U.S. Bank ReliaCard customer service at 1-855-233-8379. Once your card is mailed, deposits are usually made within three business days after you request a payment.
Keep your debit card it can be used for future unemployment benefits for up to three years. Read the information included with your card for terms, fees, and conditions. You are responsible for any fees charged. It is your responsibility to monitor the balance in your account to avoid overdrafts.

Extra $300 Unemployment Under Lost Wages Assistance Program
The NY DOL has paid out the $300 weekly payment approved under the LWA program, which provides supplemental payments to eligible unemployment benefits claimants who have been unemployed, partially unemployed, or unable or unavailable to work due to disruptions caused by COVID-19 and are currently eligible to receive at least $100 per week in benefits. All New Yorkers getting UI benefits currently will be eligible for the LWA since the minimum benefit is $104 in the state. There were a maximum of 6 weeks or $1800 funded under this program and all payment weeks have now been processed.
If you have not received your payment or you may have been eligible for this payment, you will need to contact the NY DOL for retroactive payments. However due to the limited funding for this program, you may not be able to get the extra money any longer.

How To File An Unemployment Claim In New York
New Yorkers who lose their job to covid can receive benefits for ninety-nine weeks. This number is based on the twenty-six weeks provided by the state and an additional fifty-three weeks of benefits funded by the federal government.
Claims can be filed through the Department of Labors website. Unemployed workers must claim benefits for all weeks they would like to receive benefits. Typically, there is a waiting period between when a claimant files unemployment and when they receive their first payment. However, for those requesting benefits because of a loss of work due to the pandemic, the waiting period has been waved.
Each week, those requesting payments must provide information to demonstrate that they are eligible. If the benefits are approved, recipients will receive their payments through a pre-paid debit card or direct deposit. For those who receive a debit card, the funds can be withdrawn from an ATM or point of sale terminal. For those with access to a bank account that allows for direct deposit, account information can be provided to the Department of Labor, and the benefits will be deposited as claims are approved. Once your application has been approved, the Department of Labor will send a Monetary Determination with information on your weekly benefit amount.
